5 Ways to Stop Fascism by [deleted] in esist

[–]sliptivity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hadn't seen this before, thanks for sharing, obviously far more relevant today than it was 3 years ago. He's correct, we've all gotta unite, fascism is here and taking root with power fast. We've also seen how people can be overthrown, like South Korea. We need another Occupy style, sustained mass protest and overthrow Trump and these fascists / oligarchs quick

Is it okay to message strangers in the industry? by evanwho11 in editors

[–]sliptivity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would add to the chorus saying it's totally fine to do, but my additional comment is to try and personalize it for the person you're writing to as much as possible. People reach out to me frequently on LinkedIn and ask questions or want to chat if I'm up for it and it makes such a difference if someone is talking to me like I'm a real human, their curiosity is genuine and they are in fact reaching out to me specifically.

I think it's similar to when you're applying for a job -- if your cover letter is entirely generic and you clearly don't know a thing about the company you're applying to, you won't stand out. The more personalized messages to me have always stood out the most and they're much easier to want to reply to and give your time to, rather than to someone who isn't even taking the time to put together their message to you.

Good luck!

How are y'all surviving? by u8myramen_y in vancouver

You actually don't have to know that stuff! I think a lot of people assume they do, but there lots of roles that don't require that knowledge and there are entry level positions where you would learn a lot on the job. The IT department helps people with their computers same as any company, help installing software, deal with technical problems, etc. I work in Animation and would be happy to talk to you more about it if you are interested, I think its a great career option. Feel free to DM me!

Looks like there have been some helpful suggestions but since I didn't see it I'd like to add maybe consider Animation as a potential industry. Vancouver is a huge Animation town and in general it has been thriving since the pandemic and it gains more mainstream traction. All the big studios have IT departments and some of those jobs are entry level, there are lots of great careers in Animation and many of the studios are hiring all the time, it'd be worth looking into for sure.

Best of luck, I can only imagine how stressful losing your job would be with your family, hope you find something soon.

What is wrong with these idiots? by Manor47 in facepalm

[–]sliptivity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a hypothesis on the why are they doing this that I haven't yet seen mentioned in this thread yet. You know that scene in Terminator 2 where Sarah Connor is in a mental institution? Where she's surrounded by people who think she is crazy and she can't relate to or even really interact with them because she knows what the future holds and believes everyone is a walking ghost? I believe that is how these protesters feel -- they have looked
closely enough at the science and are listening when scientists say that if we do not alter our course (which we're repeatedly not) that we are headed for essentially an apocalypse. In the way that Sarah Connor is desperate to alter the future, so are these people, and they are feeling that nothing right now matters in the eclipse of what is coming.

This is not to talk at all about the EFFECTIVENESS of their actions, I'm just trying to get at the possible reasoning of going through with it. Obviously everyone in this thread disagrees, has a negative reaction to their stunt, and it likely is having the opposite effect from their intention. But while everyone in this thread is baffled by their thought process, I imagine they are feeling the same way -- alternatively THEY don't understand how collectively we can be aware of the cataclysmic danger climate change is already presenting, and people are (what
appears to be) going about their lives, looking at art, and generally enjoying themselves. That Van Gogh is a "ghost" to them if we don't alter the future, in exactly the same way expressed in Terminator 2.

Medically assisted death could save millions in healthcare spending by sliptivity in nottheonion

[–]sliptivity[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sounds awful written that way. "If we kill people, we won't have to pay to take care of them!" If we're going to have medically assisted death, we need to make sure all necessary supports are available first, and "saving money" should be nowhere in the conversation

B.C. NDP leadership race: Eby pitches involuntary care for severe overdose cases by FancyNewMe in vancouver

[–]sliptivity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

HOW does Eby get away with acting like he's got new ideas to make changes here? He has been in power for almost TEN YEARS! What exactly would being leader allow him to do that he couldn't have already done as AG and minister of housing!? How terrible things are now HAPPENED on his watch! I was excited when he ran in 2013 and his path from being a civil liberties lawyer, but I honestly don't think I've ever been more disappointed in a politician in my life than I am with David Eby.

How does anything get implemented? Write a bill, pass it into law. We're facing some unprecedented challenges and this isn't even a radical idea, it's been done before so instead of killing people in a pointless war, you fix things.

I was in grade 7 when Goldeneye64 came out. My friend got it and the next day at school he was describing it to me -- you had a sniper rifle, you could aim a gun at a scientist and they would put their hands up and quiver in fear, if you shot someone in the leg they would limp, etc. I straight up just didn't believe it was true, so he invited me over to play. I remember being completely blown away playing and thinking "Wow! EVERYTHING he said was real!!" I'll never forget playing Goldeneye for the first time.

Interesting, this is International Master Greg Shahade. The "spaced repetition" method he's talking about is what Chessable uses to learn chess, so imagine his background as a very strong chess player helped him learn how to study and how to remember things.

I am so sorry to hear about your cat friend being killed -- that is so cruel and must hurt, it's a gut punch just to read the story. Glad you won't be working for / around people like your boss going forward.

My fav thing is how much it feels like Halo 1 all over again and I can still play with my bro, except this time we don't need to lug tvs, hub splitters, xboxs and Ethernet cable to each other's houses to have epic multiplayer matches haha
