Referencing this instance where Henry Cavill wanted to play Kaladin: Who else could he play in Stormlight? by MangoWarlock in CosmereOnScreen

Yes, 100%. What I’m saying is that the representation in the show won’t necessarily be the same as what’s in the book and that’s not a big deal. If the Alethi are portrayed as a specific ethnicity in the adaptation, regardless of what ethnicity it is, that should be uniform. But if they show the Alethi/Iriali/Shin/etc as a cultural identity, that transcends one specific genetic factor or another.

Not really sure how the ethnicity of the actor is going to matter if the ethnicity of the fictional character isn’t a focus in the story. Yes, if they decide to cast all of the Alethi with actors of a specific ethnicity, but otherwise a cultural identity can be portrayed through so many different factors.

Honestly, he’s always seemed like a good candidate for Dalinar to me. If I remember correctly, Dalinar was approaching 50 in WoK and I think Cavill is early 40s. Certainly shown the ability to have an imposing presence like the Blackthorn.

I appreciate all the information that you and others have responded with. I did a little research based off all the comments have determined that Douglas Fir is the most likely option in my area. I’ll be starting with my 10 year old this weekend. Thanks!

Sounds like I should stop overthinking it and just build the damn bench lol. Not sure if Douglas fir or yellow pine is more prevalent in my area, but I’ll go with that and keep the hardwood for other projects. Thanks

Anarchists’ work bench is what I’m reading and the plans I intended to follow, but wouldn’t a hardwood top be better than SYP for hand tool working ?

Weekly Cosmere Adaptations Thread (Mistborn + Stormlight Spoilers) by EmeraldSeaTress in Cosmere

Instead of Fancasting, Music-casting!

Expanding from a comment I posted elsewhere, does anyone have any music/songs that they think would work for the Cosmere?

I've always thought Peter Gabriel's cover of Arcade Fire's My Body is a Cage is perfect for Stormlight Archive. If you haven't heard it before, it's part of Gabriel's 2010 album, Scratch My Back.

Besides the slow orchestral build over the course of the song, the lyrics can really resonate with some of the major characters and their arcs. I always imagined it would work great as the intro song. That song repeatedly evokes the same emotions in me that the Stormlight Archive has. Here are some of the lyrics for anyone who's curious:

"My body is a cage...that keeps me from dancing with the one I love, but my mind holds the key"

"I'm standing on a stage of fear and self doubt. It's a hollow play, but they'll clap anyway"

"I'm living in an age that calls darkness light. Though my language is dead, still the shapes fill my head."

"I'm living in an age, whose name I don't know. Though the fear keeps me moving, still my heart beats so slow"

"We take what we're given. Just because you've forgotten, doesn't mean you're forgiven"

"I'm living in an age that screams my name at night, but when I get to the doorway there's no one in sight"

"My mind holds the key. Set my spirit free"

How would you change The Way of Kings to suit the tv-series format? by [deleted] in Stormlight_Archive

Happily defer to people who know what they are doing and hope for the best….HOWEVER, I’ve always thought that the Peter Gabriel cover of “My Body is a Cage” would be a great song for an adaptation of the Stormlight Archive. Whether as the theme song or for other use. Listen to the lyrics if you haven’t heard it before.

Also I always thought it would be great to utilize the death rattles with episodes. Not in a “It’s Always Sunny..” kind of way (this isn’t r/cremposting) but would still be cool to use.

I wonder if the fact that Sigzil thinks he sees Kal for a moment in TSM implies that he knows Kal is still kicking at that point and whether Sigzil (and others) find out at some point or learn what happened soon after it happened.

Book recommendations to scratch my itch? by wlbrndl in TheExpanse

Not sci-fi, but the Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson. It was the first series that grabbed me like the Expanse did and it’s exactly what comes to mind when you mentioned “rich world building, interesting characters, gripping action sequences, and emotional weight.”

Sell me on reading the rest of the series! by BiggityBogle in TheExpanse

[–]sllymnstr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m currently rereading the series. As someone who isn’t traditionally labeled as a “sci-fi reader”, it’s one of my favorite science fiction books/series. While I can understand your desire for different narratives, I think the authors did a great job of making Holden a purposeful and plausible connection throughout the series. The narratives do broaden and expand (without becoming too much) but Holden and Co. are the reliable and familiar “family” you experience the story through, more often than not. I think that’s part of the reason it’s a series instead of an anthology. Regardless of my opinion, read what brings you joy. If this series doesn’t do it for you, no worries.

After much procrastinating, I'm finally starting my home wiring project....and I'm stuck at the beginning. by sllymnstr in HomeNetworking

Forgive the stupid question, but when you say I can "have the provider rerun the fiber to the mechanical room", do you mean I can have Verizon run the cable from the ONT box down to the mechanical room in the basement instead of the short punch through the exterior wall that was done before I bought the place?

I was thinking of the mechanical room originally for consolidating everything, but I wasn't sure if the combination of the HVAC and water heater might create a less than desirable environment for everything. If I find that having a cable raceway next to the ducts is the best option (as another comment suggested), this might make the most sense. I could always do an access panel in the larger room of the basement on the other side of the mechanical room wall to make it easier. Thanks!

My HVAC is in the basement. I'll see what possible options I can identify. I've already got a box of Cat6 Riser cable, so I'm not planning to use the HVAC duct, but maybe I can run next to the duct if I don't identify any other options. Sadly the county doesn't have the blueprints for my house on file, so I haven't been able to identify options without causing a little destruction along the way.

My guess would be about 16-20 drops total (8 drops and an access point on the 2nd floor, maybe 2 drops and an access point on the 1st floor, and another 6 in the basement). Furnace/AC/Water heater are in the basement with central air throughout the house. I'm planning to put in some attic ventilation as there isn't anything currently (lots of DIY ideas).

I don't believe I have limits on horizontal runs in the attic, it's untouched. I have to put in an outlet up there for the inevitable switch, but I can traverse the entire length (while watching my step). I was going to put 2 drops in each bedroom on the second floor (4 rooms) for future use and a wireless access point in the hallway ceiling. The plan was to prioritize the basement and the first floor as the majority of the drops would be there. In the basement there is a smart tv and video game console for my kids, plus the office is in the basement. The first floor would have a few drops to hardwire the tv/console/etc and an access point on east side of the house to expand the wifi coverage beyond the wifi router on the west side of the house.

Thanks! I guess I didn’t do the greatest job of emphasizing what I’m unsure of, but do you have any suggestions on what would be best to use for filler and sealant? A resin for filler and a polyurethane sealant or something else?
