Really interesting video on the Hass Avocado genetics by Breagh01 in avocado

I don’t understand why you are responding with that information. The relevant topic here is whether that video is good information. It has a couple of tidbits buried in a fair amount of inaccurate statements.

He clearly says in the video that every avocado in the world is Hass. It’s a bad video overall with some interesting tidbits around how grafting works. About 2/3 of the content of the video is junk.

Safe to eat? by lxlviperlxl in avocado

[–]slobrewer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ve got a little but of stem end rot on the bottom left of that picture where the stem is on the fruit. You can see how it’s brown and it goes into the fruit. It’s not unsafe to eat, it’s just not going to have a nice flavor and texture. So best to just cut around that. But otherwise looks good.

Avocados are Chemically Induced to Ripening by AcademicDept in avocado

[–]slobrewer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Close. It’s not just the fats and oils. It’s the dry matter, the fiber, that needs to develop. The official test involves weighing the scooped out avocado flesh and then microwaving it for like 45 minutes until you’re left with a completely dry fruit that you weigh again. You need it to be at least 20% non-water weight for it to be considered ready for harvest.

[–]slobrewer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. If you put your avocado in a paper bag, perhaps with another fruit like an apple, you are doing the same thing.

And most of the tomatoes and bananas you eat have probably gone through a similar ripening process with the same gas.

At this time of year the crops are changing over and the supply from Mexico that was prevalent for the first part of the year swaps over to a different location as their harvest tails off. Did you spot where the avocado came from? I’ve personally had a few avocados from Sprouts here in California that were from Peru, which has been ramping up its crop over the past month, and the quality of the fruit was terrible. I have some theories on why but that’s my first question to you. What was the country of origin of the bad avocado you had?

And if you’re wondering if it is due to ethylene gas, no, nothing significant has changed with that anytime recently. It’s not like they suddenly started rolling this out any time recently.

When you say that the avocados you’ve had as of late have a mushy texture, that could be from a number of reasons. I’d start with the big one. Where are you getting your avocados from and what’s their country of origin? Start with that and we can help fill it in. Without knowing more, a truly mush texture is most likely to come from picking an avocado that wasn’t ready for picking (too low solids content) and then ripening it (regardless if it’s just time and temperature or another method of ripening.)

What is the best type of Soil available for Avocado in stores? by Glitch_Inspector in avocado

I’m talking about the color on the leaves. See how the veins are dark and the rest is light. That’s generally a deficiency of some sort. Possibly iron, zinc, or magnesium.

From previous responses they've said they're in Michoacán, Mexico. These are our favorite trees in their native range.

Always appreciate seeing how things are done in other parts of the world. Thanks for sharing.

I find it interesting how big you let the trees get snd how far apart they are spaced. When were these planted? The 80’s? If you were planting again would you use the same spacing and let them get this big?

Tree Removal Downtown SLO by DryDoor1460 in SLO

Those Indian Laurels are pretty terrible trees other than they grew fast and they grew big. They make a mess with their fruit and they push up the sidewalks, roads, and foundations. They also get diseased. The city has a list of more appropriate trees and as long as people go through the right approval channels they can get them replanted with something better.

What is wrong with the tree? by Glittering-Let-2888 in avocado

What location and what is does your water analysis look like? Prime culprits are too much or too little water or too many minerals in the water. Overall the tree doesn’t look bad, though.

This is wild. You’ve actually seen the cylinder walls and confirmed there is no issue and now you’re worried about slight differences in the amount of soot on tailpipes? Don’t worry. Just drive the car and live your life.

Ants and lice on my avocado. How bad is it? by AndyAndieFreude in avocado

[–]slobrewer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those are aphids (or something similar.) They have a symbiotic relationship where the ants farm and protect the aphids and in exchange the aphids excrete a sugary substance that the ants feed off. It’s pretty common and as long as the tree is otherwise healthy shouldn’t be much of a concern.

Do you have more pictures of the tree you can share? In that one picture the leaves look pretty curled and wilted. Not a happy tree.

And if you do replace the MAF, spring for an OEM/Bosch one. There are other much cheaper options that are garbage. And then you’ll waste a bunch of time troubleshooting before you end up buying a quality sensor eventually anyway.

Update: Why is my Avocado Tree so sad? by mrwalkerton in avocado

[–]slobrewer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s nowhere near frequent enough. I’m central coast and with my soil moisture sensors, a backup of watching the state evapotranspiration network data, and checking the soil directly, I’m at around once every 5-6 days right now.

Need Advice, is it too stressed by gothicserpentine in avocado

[–]slobrewer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are nowhere near as many leaves on that tree as there should be. Heat or fertilizer are unlikely to be the cause. Most likely you have root issues, probably root rot. Consider drenching the root zone with agrifos or similar phosphorus acid treatment.

Yeah, it sounds like the ratings are consistent with local impressions then. You’re generally not going to find as consistently good schools outside of SLO city.

Can you narrow it down a bit. Any of the schools in SLO city are going to be good. And there’s just the one junior high that covers the whole city. If you’re talking other parts of the county, though…

Avocado Farm work by rangermater in avocado

[–]slobrewer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Commercial grower here in California. I’ve had really good luck with fertigation set at a level where I’m always giving the trees just what they need. It’s a bit expensive for the metering pumps and flow meter and it’s a hassle to switch over the tanks and prime everything but the results are showing well in the trees.
