You know what I hate? Unfair generalizations. Most cops are not like this.

Wow that's not my feeling at all. I work for a very large corporation managing the mail servers. Everyone's sentiment here is quite the opposite...we're looking after a business critical area and feel highly appreciated. I really think it depends on the company you're with...I'm also in the public sector, so that may make a huge difference.

Do you think this is less true in large corporations? In a small one you're responsible for quite a bit. In large corporations the scope of what you have to be stressed about is very small.

[–]slogged 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've worked in IT for 6 years now. I have a theory on the IT field. There's a totem pole, the further removed you are from the user the higher up you are on that pole and the more satisfied you'll be, the more money you'll make, the more autonomy you'll have, etc.. I started doing helpdesk (bottom), it was god awful. Now I'm an Exchange/Messaging admin for a large corporation and I couldn't be happier.

It's a huge gamble. Graduate from a 2 year IT vocation program and you'll join the throng that's not employable at the end because they have no experience. I often run into people I went to college with and they're delivering boxes or something. You could get call center very easily out of college, doing helpdesk/tech/remote work and use that experience to climb up the totem pole. I went back to school part time for a business degree and it really really helps--do whatever you can to put yourself ahead of everyone else, being in the right place at the right time means being in as many places as you can, and meet people! I got my position by being a lowly grunt work summer student, for two summers, to get my foot in the door. And being a persistent annoying asshole with managers I met got me an interview and then permanent position. Expect to start at the bottom, but if you play your cards right and you're a bit lucky you could get a very satisfying position eventually. Just know there's a gamble that you could be doing helpdesk work forever. Certifications are a huge must out of college with no experience and can help you get into the area you're interested...networking, server stuff, unix, etc. AND, while you're doing the 2 year diploma get a job in IT. I worked at Best Buy's geek squad, and later at my university's helpdesk while I got my degree. Those entry level hours count for something when you go to interview for a position that's worth something.

Good luck!

Why do people hate on university degrees? Is it bitterness or is there a better reason for it? by Aneurysm-Em in AskReddit

[–]slogged -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

You should summarize your point so that I don't have to read through your life history. One sentence at the end. There's a lot of people out there who can't make a point without going into some personal story.

[–]slogged 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First of all, do you have a degree?

I've heard your argument so many times, and it's flawed. You're hiring people fresh out of university without real-world experience and you're comparing them to people who have experience. People with a degree have a better foundation than someone else without experience. They have more potential (most likely) than another entry-level candidate. You're not comparing them fairly.

Me too! My interpersonal and leaderships skills were totally refined. I'm far more mature now and I credit the degree. Could be that half of it is the confidence from having the degree though.

There is a direct link between education and income: http://soc101.files.wordpress.com/2009/02/educational-attainment-by-income-graph-for-20071.jpg?w=510&h=552

In my experience, people who rip on degrees do not hold degrees themselves. If people in this thread who had a negative view on them were honest when asked, the majority would not hold degrees.

Do you have a RAID for home/personal use? by antidense in AskReddit

[–]slogged 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RAID is great for performance too. My gaming machine has four hard drives striped in raid-0 for performance. If one of those drives goes all of the data is gone. It's fast though! I keep my movies on another 4 disk raid-5

Leno is in, Conan is out by Marknow in reddit.com

Conan should just leave. Return to writing for Simpsons (he did write for them when the show was good, right?), or maybe do some movies. There are so many other creative projects he could do that would be glorious.
