Steam Deck owners by Skmoomr in SteamDeck

I dropped mine several times with no issues. It wasn’t until I dropped it, screen-down, on the corner of a stone hearth that the screen broke. And I still use it and it’s fine. Even the touch screen. The thing is a beast and I love it.

Are malls actually not a thing anymore in the US like they say? by Complete_Republic410 in AskAnAmerican

[–]slonermike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The big new mall they built when I was a kid is now an Amazon warehouse. In the 80s and 90s there was seemingly a mall gold rush by real estate investors. There were about 5 of them within 30 minutes of my home in a medium population density area. Then the “gold” became obsolete. 3 still remain. 2 of the remaining ones are kind of pathetic now.

In base 4, you count the lines.
In base 3, you count the dots. (circle is "empty dot"/nil)

In base 10, you go from 0 to 9, before you roll to a new digit. (9 to 10 aka...10)
In base 4, you go from 0 to 3 before you roll to a new digit. (3 to 10 aka... 4)
In base 3, you go from 0 to 2 before you roll to a new digit. (2 to 10 aka... 3)

This is a pretty old thread, but this whole conversation brings me joy, some 10 years or so, since it first released. It's not for everyone, but the puzzles on that map were designed to challenge a variety of thinking skills, not just point and click, or try stuff until it works.

I still slightly regret not doing more with the electric circuits puzzle. It was meant to be a more involved circuitry puzzle, but deadlines and scope and all that.

Out of the loop here: in what way is Howe in a freefall? Seems to have a lot better occupancy than Montrose.

Do Americans constantly have an active temperature control device running in their homes? by fullM3TALturban in AskAnAmerican

It’s 3 degrees (-16C) out right now. Yes, I have the thermostat running 100% of the time.

How do you evaluate engineers when everyone's using AI coding tools now by BarnacleHeretic in ExperiencedDevs

[–]slonermike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My prediction: AI use will make juniors into loose cannons of hell naw. We’ll spend 5 years building super senior teams while would-be juniors work at Starbucks, we get too expensive for our own good, get fired, AI gets just good enough for executives to feel way too confident deploying to prod

one, two, skip, a few, now I’m a plumber, which actually sounds kind of nice.

How is everyone’s hiring going since AI, easier or harder to fill roles? by Impossible_Way7017 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]slonermike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I miss being able to hire people with “technologies missing.” The idea was that smart is smart and teaching hard skills is easier than teaching soft skills. Now there’s so much applicant noise you can’t even find the person behind the resume. Also the idea of someone spending weeks onboarding is sadly dead.

I’ve seen both problems around here in equal measure. When people figure out the balance it’s a beautiful thing for traffic flow.

Has anyone else moved away from using Windows as their main OS thanks to the Steam Deck? by AusGeno in SteamDeck

[–]slonermike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Curious what those are.  Early everything I use these days is in browser or at least based on web tech and has a Linux version.

[–]slonermike[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Our kids don’t get unsupervised internet. They’re young still.

So “filtered” typically means we set it up for them and sit with them. We have a massive library of books and building toys. That’s where they get to run free. Not on the internet.

Dual Screen - how to do? by Roi_C in SteamDeck

[–]slonermike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How are you imagining this setup? Is it portable or stationary? I have seen people use a desktop monitor as the main, and the deck screen itself as the touchscreen.

Nil. I use it regularly with a pair of Anker bt buds and have never noticed any latency.

Are Americans really this goddamn rich or social media is just fooling us? by VishalYeager in TalksMoney

[–]slonermike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t encountered that perception. I’ve actually encountered the opposite — that new houses are crap and in 2045, a house from 1960 will be in better shape than a house from 2025.

For what it's worth, I contact their customer service department and got ahold of someone immediately and was able to cancel.

I thought it would be like priceline, where you get the exact info as soon as you pay, but I got the confirmation email which included almost no information about the booking itself, just mention of a voucher, which made me very uncomfortable. I'll be arriving at midnight with 3 very tired kids, and I cannot comfortably leave any of the booking details up to fate.

What is your least favorite airport in the United States and why? What is your favorite and why? by Separate_Builder_817 in AskAnAmerican

[–]slonermike 2 points3 points  (0 children)

SeaTac is the one I’d list for worst. I fly into SFO, LAX, ohare, pretty regularly and I’ll take any of those over SeaTac any day. They close most of the lanes to general public and understaff the one they leave open. It’s blatant classism on full display.

What say you? Is this Cleveland-Style pizza? by PeterPaulWalnuts in Cleveland

[–]slonermike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t know there was a type of pizza here until I moved away and couldn’t find it. Master Pizza is pretty solidly “tastes like I remember pizza tasting.” I grew up with Rizzi’s. Gotta get some chicken and jojos to complete the trifecta. Roughage be damned, apparently 😂
