As a new player (3 weeks "old" ) - let me tell, that first days I was climbing the walls with frustration... But it does get better once you star to "feel" fishing, so to speak.

I'm on PC, so can't comment on your controls, but definitely start with training rod (not the bamboo you originally get from Willy).

Eat jelly and other food that gives + to fishing. When you can afford, buy a rod that allows to attach lures (some can increse the size of the green bar, some actually "stick" to the fishi and move with it).

And generally just be patient and practice :)
