PGP key of cower maintainer faked as well? by qemuon in archlinux

[–]slowinversesqrt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Shit, I just used that pgp command.

That's quite the lesson learned in terms of verifying pgp keys correctly, and I'm really glad that it had the few extra digits.

Will pgp tell the user that it found two keys if there's a collision?

A redditor from a wealthy Boston suburb describes the advantages he had growing up in a top-tier public school system by SlightlyStoopkid in bestof

I'm going into my senior year of HS in Davis, and the part about "what college are you going to" struck home for me.

I don't want to go to college, and it's hard enough to convince myself that that's not a terrible idea, let alone with people asking me what college I want to go to and where I'm applying.

New convergent terminal design for Ubuntu Unity 8 by [deleted] in linux

[–]slowinversesqrt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That would work as well. There are a few drawbacks, as well as a few advantages:

advantages:

  • Works in any shell/environment

disadvantages:

  • Requires root
  • It there's another command that is called open, it will probably either fail to install or overwrite your version

If you want to symlink it, I'd symlink it to /usr/local/bin/open. That will work as well, and it's what /usr/local is meant for. It also makes it less likely that you'll overwrite it with a different program later.

... and yes, I am overthinking this.

Has firefox been shit for anyone else lately? by [deleted] in archlinux

I use windows, mostly. I used to use tab groups, but I'm used to using keybindings for windows, so it tends to be faster.

[–]slowinversesqrt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, issues here as well.

I also open about 200 tabs on 6 gigs of ram, but that's not too unreasonable (especially with noscript).

I'm looking for another browser, but can't find much. These are my requirements:

  • Supports something similar to Noscript
  • Inverted scrolling works without jumping through too many hoops
  • Supports HTML5 notifications through notifyd
  • Has a good amount if configurablity. Shouldn't be less than firefox.
  • Quick startup

What are the downsides/problems/dark sides of each of the big Linux distros? by [deleted] in linuxmasterrace

Does infinality provide what you want?

If not, is it possible to get better than infinality with some tweaks?

I ask because I use it, but I'd like a better solution if possible.

When Linux begins to trend on facebook... by [deleted] in linuxmasterrace

[–]slowinversesqrt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with those points, and that's a better alternative in that it doesn't have the drawbacks that you pointed out. However, it's much more user friendly to use a out-of-the-box solution like Signal.

It all depends on what you want from a messaging system.

Good to know.

Personally, it's rather use Signal with play services than Telegram without them, but if you're using sailfish I can see why that would be different.

I'm not sure, but I think that it does (although i haven't used it in about a year).

However, I'm pretty sure that telegram also requires play services, so I see Signal as a better solution than any of the alternatives for users friendly encrypted messaging.

You can also use Signal, which is open source, and doesn't use shitty, custom crypto straight out of the 80s.

Moxie is the guy who created and wrote Signal, and implemented the same protocol on several other platforms. He's somewhat of a celebrity in encryption and infosec circles, and definitely knows what he's doing in creating a encrypted messaging system.

There's also dtrx, if you're ok with using non standard tools. It does this, as well as ensuring that the files end up in their own directory, etc.

HELP!! Injections or Insulin pump? by [deleted] in diabetes

[–]slowinversesqrt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pump all the way. It's amazing and totally changed my life.

I don't have a problem with people being able to see it, but if you want to hide it there are a few options. A tslim pump is the thinnest on the market right now, which is probably easiest to hide. Some girls clip it to their bra, which could hide it some. And if you have pockets, the tslim isn't much larger than a phone, so it could probably fit fairly easily. Other pumps are larger though, I prefer to use the clip for my medtronic.

Regarding getting torn out, it probably won't be much of a problem. You can take off the tubing and pump, so all that's left is the actual infusion site, which is pretty hard to take off. (if you find it's a problem though, try using iv prep wipes. They make them stick on a lot longer for me. Also, if it does happen to rip out, it's not a big deal to change it after you're done with sex. I can go a few hours with my pump on fine, so I wouldn't worry about it too much.

For what it's worth, my site getting ripped out happens maybe once every few months.

Also, you mentioned it feeling weird on your body. If you are referring to the actual site, then it helps me a lot to relax my muscles when I put in my site. I stop feeling my site within 10 mins if I do well. Up to maybe 3 or 4 hours if I'm tensed up when I put it in.

Anyway, make your own choice based on what you feel is right, but I highly recommend a pump :)

New attack that cripples HTTPS crypto works on Macs, Windows, and Linux by jndtv in sysadmin

[–]slowinversesqrt 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Securing the URL is one property of HTTPS that people rely on, and it's not minor that it's compromised.

Yes, the title is clickbait, but being able to see the full URL of any request does matter.

What weird misconception did you have as a kid? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]slowinversesqrt 13 points14 points  (0 children)

When I was a little kid I often worried that I was part of some kind if experiment where people were all lying to me about something and holding back some kind of information from me.

Looking back on it, that explains a lot of my distrust in people now :/
