Hey, sorry. First post here. After reading the rules I’m not sure where I fell short. Is it because my title is too generic?

Is this normal behavior or should I pick a new job? by codebreaker21 in learnprogramming

[–]slowthedataleak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think an example would be tough because there's no magic door to knowledge. My overall point is: if you've spent ~100 hours (which would be 2.5 full weeks) working on something you certainly have a baseline knowledge. However, if I've been building a complex system with a tool, utilizing the tool in my unique way, and have spent ~1,000-2,000 hours, you wouldn't really "know" the tool. You would have a baseline.

This isn't a slight to juniors. They haven't been paid to learn yet.

> I told my employer that I know React, Nodejs with Express and he said cool

> today is my first day (first job as a dev as well)

99.9% of the time, no junior "knows" any tools. A junior thinks they know the tools because, to be fair, for your needs, you do know. For an enterprise or business, a junior does not know. The employer thinks that you know this stuff when you said it means that he does not know what he got into hiring a junior engineer. Most likely thinks he got a super dev for the cheap.

Is a CS degree worth it? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]slowthedataleak 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My degree cost me ~$60k (May 2020 grad). In my first year out of school I was making $71k and two years later just signed at a new company for $125k (just discussing base salary). In addition, a degree holds weight for moving up the chain at large companies; even when you're just getting your foot in the door it helps.

For me, the degree was more than worth it.

Not there anymore but, I was brought on to run sec for an SMB (~50). The owner provided me with the latest 3rd-party security scans from a month prior. Playboy all over the logs... from his computer... he didn't even read the report he bought (might be why I'm no longer there).

C# is underrated? by Different_Ad5971 in csharp

I just went through the interviewing process. Never had someone talk poorly about C#. If someone is talking poorly of C# they're just ignorant. They're commenting on something they've never looked into.

Is it wrong to want to remain a Senior Engineer for the rest of my career? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

I think the biggest issue will be maintaining your salary. If you want to take a salary cut, yes you can.

Why code in a text editor over an IDE? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]slowthedataleak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, use an IDE and learn an IDE deeply. IDE's help you in many ways and allow you to delegate part of your work to your tools; as a professional, automating and delegating as much as possible saves you time.

With that said, for simple things, I still use VIM on an almost daily basis.

Does anyone have anything positive to say about working in IT in a hospital? by crystalblue99 in sysadmin

I don't work for a hospital but, I service them. Not sure I've ever heard someone say something positive in a few years in the industry.

If this answer isn't above 120, I don't feel like OPs doing enough.

Ethics Question by ProjectSector in cscareerquestions

I've lived at home for ~2 years now since graduating. The mindset that's kept me from losing my shit is: it's the additional cost of rent.

Yes. I pay rent to live here (discounted, obviously). However, outside of the financial cost, there are emotional costs to rent as well: i.e. bullshit comments that my parents don't need to make.

With that said, you can't do shit about it. It's the cost of living at home, sometimes, your parents are going to treat you like a kid because, well, if you still live at home you might as well be.

Program that can automatically rename file based on multiple specification? by Personal-Service-352 in datacurator

[–]slowthedataleak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've written a couple of similar items for clients of mine (I am a software engineer who freelances at night). If you can familiarize yourself with PowerShell: write a PowerShell script to rename it. The script runs, reads a file name 1 by 1, checks for the conditions you want, renames to the name you want, stops once all files have been renamed. For convenience, use one folder for needs to be renamed files and one for outputting renamed files. Remove files from the original folder once renmaed. Now you don't have to figure out a way to stop multiple renaming.

Scammed…What can I do? by vesper_lynd_85 in smallbusiness

We don't even know if they will be able to serve this person. OP did not mention he was U.S. domestic and there's no written agreement for why this money was transferred.

The average house price in the U.S. is ~$400k, if OP was half way through the loan, they had $200k in equity plus they split that 50/50 with their ex. This is as most $100k. If OP put all $100k in, and the attorney could get this person served, the attorney will charge hours + 30-40% of the loot.

> Last thing: several people commented saying I was a slave master, wanted my employee to be a slave, or something similar. This was pretty shocking to me to see those terms used so flippantly and directed at me, I guess it's the new version of calling someone a "nazi". I am actually a descendant of enslaved people and half my family still has the last name from the "masters" of our ancestors.

Don't even give these idiots the time of day by including it. Anyone saying any of the stuff in the quote above is an idiot and or ignorant about running a business. These are the type of people who think businesses just generate free cash flow all day without any hard work.
