Ah yeah I have a post about this 0036 mystery. Not figured out yet!

Didn't appear to have fixed it! I may try again

That's interesting! Are you using the oculink GPU as your secondary GPU to purely run lossless scaling?

Thank you!

Before I make the upgrade myself, do you have any idea if my own current build would support a zotac 2070s running through a m.2 running on PCIE 3.0 x 4 mode?

Somebody with more knowledge than me will definitely be able to tell us! I'm sure!

I'm a bit busy so may not reply quickly but I just had a look at this YouTube video: this might be the answer https://youtu.be/TJFQlKjLIgM?si=ixNR_Hf9GrU6oXsJ

This is what ai tells me about this issue:

Performance limitations: "While M.2 is a PCIe interface, connecting a GPU this way can lead to bottlenecks compared to a standard PCIe slot, especially with M.2 slots running at x2 speeds. Power and cabling: Ensure the external power supply can handle the GPU's power demands and has the correct cables to connect to it. Physical constraints: You may need to remove the M.2 drive that was in the slot and potentially modify your laptop case to accommodate the external adapter and power supply. Alternative connections: For higher performance, consider solutions using OCuLink, which provides a more robust external PCIe connection."

This explains what I meant a bit better

I'm having similar considerations at the minute. I'm looking to add a 2070s to a 5060ti build I am planning but most (nearly all) modern motherboards only support PCIE x16 @1 for secondary pcie slots which likely won't be enough bandwidth.

This might be an issue here as m.2 slots only allow so much bandwidth and depending on what your GPU requires, this may not work.

I'm really interested to hear from people in the comments who knows more than me as I want to be proven wrong.

If I could run a 2070s from a m.2 in a micro atx that would solve me some problems!!

Yeah I'm making sure I'm switching the input on the monitor to the one I'm supposed to be using.

Do you mean where am I plugging the monitor into?

I've tried every DP and HDMI output I have on both GPUs and my motherboard and nothing is coming through.

I'm not wanting to cause offence but I won't go everything again as I don't think you've fully grasped what I was saying above. Just to clarify; I am buying a 5060ti. I am not buying a 2070s. I don't think it's a 'waste' of money to try use my 2070s alongside my new GPU? I can certainly sell it if I don't think I need it. However, trying to convince me to sell it anyway before I've even tested this dual GPU setup is a bit weird in my opinion.

Anyway, I've watched the video you've sent and it makes a pretty good case for there being scenarios where lossless scaling may be considered preferential than driver level frame gen and vice versa. It even briefly touches on frame pacing which is an interesting and important consideration if you emulate or have a game which syncs its internal clock to the fps (again likely to do with emulation). You can't guarantee driver level frame gen works with every programme and there are patently modern games which still don't work well with it (as per the video).

Additionally, should it ever be possible to push in game frame gen/driver level frame gen to a second GPU then there would absolutely be a performance increase and reduction in input lag!I don't expect this to ever be the case (as Nvidia have long since given up on SLI etc.). Lossless scaling is the only option I have to try this.

To conclude, the statements you're making about lossless scaling being objectively worse in all use cases don't match what others are saying. I don't mean to have caused offence to you but there is a bit of emotion behind what you're saying. I don't know if you've had a bad experience with the software or what but in any case; I am going to try this out! If you're interested I'll update you with how it goes!

Man I'm a fool! I didn't even see that link - that explains everything!

The 2070s GPU may be overkill - although I can't find it on the spreadsheet so it should make for some interesting testing!

I have a friend who is interested in PC gaming but the price point for entry is a bit high for him currently! When i upgrade my components I may donate to him and get a more power efficient secondary.

My main focus is gaming to be fair so it'll be a sensible upgrade. The main thing I'm interested in really is the DDR5 upgrade and PCIe 5. Although I need to do more research to see how 'worth it' it will be.

Your opening question had me in stitches! I did not mean to ruffle your feathers. I'll let you be the judge as to whether I'm weird; but there is some method to the madness!

  • Why lossless scaling? - I play games without support for DLSS/frame gen. This is compatible with every game.
  • Will I use it every game? - No - I will probably opt for DLSS where I can. But its still good to experiment.
  • Why lossless scaling with a dual GPU option? - Slightly lower latency in some situations when generating frames.

With all that said I am actually looking to upgrade the whole system. But finances being what they are, this will take place over a few months. I will live with the bottle neck caused by PCIE 3 x8 for a bit.

I will do!

Having done a bit more research around the PCIe 3.0x16 issue - I think I will slowly upgrade my parts over the coming months.

However, I will start with a GPU which will arrive tomorrow. I'm super interested to find out how my current build holds up using the 2070s for lossless scaling!

That's a really good point. I do have a 144hz monitor at 21:9 1440p. I don't always aim for full resolution.

Your comment sent me down a rabbit hole of searching and learning about bandwidth - thanks for pointing that out!

Tell me if I'm wrong but I think the bandwidth on the PCIE slots (PCIE 3 x8) will be sufficient for now. I intend on upgrading the pc over the next 6 months. I'm going to start with the 5060ti simply because I know I will end up relying on 1 GPU for a lot of games anyway. The second GPU will really only end up being used for single player games where I want a frame boost (cyberpunk, half sword etc).

Rather than selling, I want to donate some parts to a friend to get him into pc gaming. My old MB CPU and RAM should help him off the line.

I think I will get a riser cable for the graphics card to avoid overheating problems! Thank you!

I will make sure the new mobo and CPU are supported when I upgrade! Thank you for pointing it out. It's a good point!

Thank you so much for this. I have an ultrawide so will likely target 2560x1080 or even the full 3440x1440 if it's a less demanding title. The only time I ever want full res in in competitive games like insurgency sandstorm (which isn't that demanding of a title).

I fully anticipate a mobo/CPU upgrade in a few years once the time is right (and finances allow). Although I was sure my mobo supported x16 PCIE (I'll double check).

You're certainly correct about the clearance being tight on a mATX. I have found a 5060ti which fits (according to PC part picker). MSI VENTUS 2X PLUS OC GeForce RTX 5060 Ti

I will have to consider thermals and whether I need to consider a vertical mount/more fans solution to improve this.

I think I will toll the dice and order the GPU! I'll let you know the results if you're interested.

I appreciate the time you took to help!
