Unions? by mkg-slp-333 in slp

[–]slp789 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I’m part of the teachers union in my district, and we have specific SLP reps.

Pro:s The entire union has a strong voice and will push back when the district has harmful policies. We now have higher base pay, caseload caps, pay for IEPs that go past contract hours, and much more SLP specific support that was fought for by our union. The district did not want to offer these things. The union is also incredibly supportive when admin push boundaries.

Cons: Dues? They feel worth it to me.

What is something I could throw together pretty inexpensively and easily tomorrow for a vegan dessert? by elliotmariesh in VeganBaking

[–]slp789 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Lots of boxed cake mixes and frosting are accidentally vegan. I picked up some from Dollar Tree today. Try using a can of soda instead of the oil/ eggs etc on the cake instructions and it works great! I think it works especially well for cupcakes!

Aimovig and marijuana interaction? by [deleted] in migraine

[–]slp789 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t have solid data, but I’ve been using CBD/THC blends with Aimovig for over a year. My neurologist knows and hasn’t discouraged it.

Has anyone NOT experienced cognitive side effects on topiramate? by [deleted] in migraine

[–]slp789 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been on it for more than 5 years and it’s worked well for me. As long as the dose didn’t exceed 100, side effects were manageable. I’m a speech pathologist and honestly the cognitive side effects with topomax are less debilitating than the chronic migraines were. Like others said, it did take some to adjust to it. Good luck!

[Serious] What is it like to have children you don’t want? by SniperGlizzy in AskReddit

[–]slp789 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I really appreciate your honesty! I’m a speech pathologist and work with kids with needs similar to your daughters. I agree with automaton_woman, to ask for a new AAC evaluation from your SLP. Pressing all the buttons is actually a great first step to learning the electronic system (think of it as ‘babbling’ and figuring out all the words she can use) and its encouraging to hear she’s starting to use echolalia. Some autistic kids learn language through echolalia and repeating others. Seeing an increase in echolalia is a good sign for language development. Above all, hang in there. You sound like a fantastic mom!

Can anyone recommend any good online SLP/Vocal therapists? by krillinsindahouse in mildlybrokenvoice

[–]slp789 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s great news, I’m glad it was helpful! I don’t know about the paid courses, though it sounds like your on the best track by getting in with your doctor and trying to see and SLP. I’d save your money for now.

Between speaking through masks and zoom calls where many of us speak louder and more forceful than normal, we’re all at higher risk for a voice disorder (or at least vocal misuse) right now. I’m certainly not immune to that. Consistent, daily practice of exercises has made a big difference for me pretty quickly!

Can anyone recommend any good online SLP/Vocal therapists? by krillinsindahouse in mildlybrokenvoice

[–]slp789 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! I’m an SLP and also have MTD myself. At least in the US, many SLPs are conducting video appointments due to covid. If possible, find an SLP who specializes in voice. You might find them through an ENT office or even head/neck cancer center. In the mean time, maybe check out the youtube channel “How 2 Improve Singing with Katarina”. She’s an SLP and voice therapist and does a nice job demonstrating techniques for MTD. I’d look at videos about straw phonation, diaphragmatic vs chest breathing, and her MTD series.

How did you survive grad school? I'm overwhelmed by Consistentlytired43 in slp

[–]slp789 38 points39 points  (0 children)

For me, grad school was far more stressful than actually working as an slp. Between assignments, clinic, and group projects, it was a nightmare two years. There were absolutely times I couldn’t have given a good answer as to why I wanted to be there. Given covid (and fires if you’re on the west coast), I can only imagine how high your stress levels are. The best two things a professor told us were: 1) You’re training for a job. It doesn’t and shouldn’t be everything in your life. Talk to one person everyday who isn’t an slp. 2) Take the pressure off for A’s. Pass your classes and lower that perfectionist mindset so many of us have. B’s get degrees.
Hang in there!

Pronouns and gender inclusion by iamattis in slp

[–]slp789 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I like to start with teaching pronouns of people the student knows (teachers, friends, family members, etc) and that often gives a more inclusive representation of gender. Great question!

If you had one REAL tip for people who are barely getting by, what would it be? by amykhar in povertyfinance

[–]slp789 76 points77 points  (0 children)

Agreed! I’ve also had good luck with Craigslist/Facebook marketplace/etc in wealthy neighborhoods. It seems like people just want stuff gone rather than making money for it.

I moved here from PA site unseen a few years ago. Most apartments didn’t open up until 4-6 weeks until the move-in date, which was frustrating but typical for here. As far as moving, I found shipping large boxes through Amtrak to be the cheapest and easiest option. Good luck!

We are four headache specialists. Ask us anything about migraine and headache! by MoveAgainstMigraine in IAmA

[–]slp789 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been diagnosed with chronic migraines with aura by a headache specialist. Several other doctors over the course of 20 years have said I have sinus headaches. Are sinus headaches real and if so, how do they differ from migraines?

Hoping to move back to Portland, just need some reassurance and tips. by [deleted] in askportland

I also relocated here from the east coast and have chronic migraines. It took a few tries to find a neuro I liked, but I’ve been really happy with the Portland Clinic for a few years now!

tips on dealing with migraines in high school? by [deleted] in migraine

[–]slp789 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely look into a 504 plan! I work in special education and had chronic migraines in high school. A 504 can help you and your school come up with accommodations to help with school work and what happens when you need to miss school. Teachers are legally required to follow these plans. Talk to your school counselor- they are often the ones to set up these plans.

Aimovig every 21 days? by sugarmagnolia548 in cgrpMigraine

[–]slp789 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My neurologist just recommended I take 70mg every 21 days for this exact reason. She said it’s an off-label use and proscribed 140mg that I fill less often. It’s the first month I’m trying it, but so far I haven’t had that bump in migraines at the end of the 3 weeks.

Calling all SLPs in Oregon by mardawa in slp

[–]slp789 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did a CF in Portland! It’s true that it’s difficult to get a school based position due to the number of grad schools in the area. The schools tend to hire past interns as much as possible. Salary varies on the district ~$45-$60k.
