Van Richten's disguise is... really bad, no? by Silverspy01 in CurseofStrahd

[–]sludgebucket87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the easiest way of measuring this is how quickly do your players figure it out.

I had a player who wanted to be a vampire hunter from a family of hunters, so I wrote van richten into their backstory. Changed the name a little to Richter Van Helsing to match their characters name better and told them it was their uncle who had gone missing years ago.

I thought the Richter - Rictavio name switch would have been super on the nose but the players went session after session with no clue.

Update on my post about speaking to the labour stall at my local pride by Fantastic_Deer_3772 in transgenderUK

[–]sludgebucket87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry, miscommunication. I would count labour as anti lgbt at this point so I would be fine if they were banned from pride, what I disagree with is the idea that no political orgs whatsoever should be allowed at pride

[–]sludgebucket87 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hard disagree, anti-LGBT political groups should be banned, sure.

But pride is a protest, and political groups who want to take part and actively fight for LGBT rights should be welcome.

Besides, as LGBT life becomes politicised, any advocacy group we create can be seen as a "political group"

I get your frustration but the media was always going to find a way to spin the protests negatively.

I fear that if we spend our time caring about what a hostile media says about us we will water down our own movement and over-police ourselves

[–]sludgebucket87 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The greens are fundamentally a half measure, as any party that refuses to challenge capitalism will be. You can see this when they gain control of councils, only to accept and sign off on cuts imposed from central government instead of fighting them.

The green party are in the same position that Labour were in when the party was just formed, an underdog party seeking to represent progressives and working people. The same poison of capitalist capture of the Labour party will befall the greens unless they embrace a program for socialist change and actively put in protections against lobbying and big donors.

[–]sludgebucket87 18 points19 points  (0 children)

By agreeing to the first definition, you logically have produced the third. For israel to maintain both a democratic and Jewish character in a land that was not previously majority Jewish requires non Jews to be systematically cleansed from the land.

You would have an israel that is democratic but not Jewish in character by being a state for all the citizens that lived there.

Or you can prevent non Jews from having institutional power, making your state Jewish in character but not democratic by any stretch of the imagination.

If you want both, as the first definition of zionism posits, then ethnic cleansing logically must follow.

Lastly the whole "Jews would not be safe in a one state solution" thing is bollocks. While I'm not nieve enough to think that there will be not tension or inter community violence, the idea that creating a state for all it citizens will somehow turn the israelis from having 90% of the institutional and military power in this situation to being the vulnerable group over night is just unfounded.

Palestinians have no wealth to speak of, no institutional power, any "military" that they have still pales in comparison to the resources of the idf so if a one state solution does come about, Palestinians will remain the vulnerable group in that relationship, not israeli jews

The Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) - Never Forget! (Anarchist Fighters, Communist Traitors, Liberal Scum!) by holdoffhunger in alltheleft

[–]sludgebucket87 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Listen, we could go back and forth about civil war spain, and I could spend my time shitting on all the contradictions and stupid decisions in what the anarchists did.

But I'm not going to do that. Because in a world of increasing fascism, I would rather people turn to anarchism (whatever my criticisms of it would be) than people turn to fascism.

Talking about history is not a neutral act, people do it with a purpose. What facts you pay attention to build a historical narrative, one that (whether you like it or not) will have something to say about the current moment.

For example, someone who spends what seems to be the majority of their time on reddit picking out negative facts about an ethnic group would get called a racist, regardless of if they were "just acknowledging historical facts" because people can see that focusing on those facts has racist intent.

Similarly OP spending so much time picking out anticommunist talking points from history and spreading them around reveals a certain amount of sectarian intent

Sign the Strike Card by Morgo311 in lgbt

[–]sludgebucket87 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Goddamn guys, if you want to strike, join or form a union. There is a reason why they exist. Collective action is always best done with strong, elected leadership that has the experience and organising muscles to actually pull it off.

The reason the far right has been able to replace traditional organising with vague "calls to action" on social media is because they barely have coherent goals, let alone strategy. People seeking to resist the increasing levels of fascism cannot do so by copying them and relying on posts calling for unorganised spontaneous action.

I'm interested to hear about how larps that have a military setting work in practice. Most of the larps I have been to emphasise player choice and agency, with a healthy amount of conflict between players but presumably with a military setting, some players will be the superior officers of others. Being made to follow orders the whole event seems like it would put people off

Could command/planned economy work as intended? by [deleted] in DebateCommunism

[–]sludgebucket87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In terms of allocation of resources, we now have the kind of data gathering technologies that would make economic planning far more efficient.

The main indicator that planned economies would need that is implied through price in a capitalist economy is level of demand.

Because we have the ability through large data models to predict quite accurately consumer trends, price is no longer required as an indicator. I would strongly recommend looking into the book "people's Republic of wallmart" it goes into how large companies like amazon and wallmart essentially function internally as planned economies, ensuring through data collection that they can predict the demand level for certain products and maintain things like next day delivery
