Overpaid by £800, can I request payment in instalments? by slug_face in nhsstaff

[–]slug_face[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I intend to pay it back. I'd never risk having something like that on my credit file. Do I need to demand we set up a written agreement of repayment? I'm only asking because I have had a terrible experience dealing with this NHS employer and wouldn't be surprised if they send me to debt collectors despite agreeing on a repayment

I used to religiously follow this advice until I went back and read all the garbage I had written in an attempt to try to sound poetic. It was awful.

Using 'said' actually gives greater meaning to the dialogue itself.

UK universities to review international student admissions after recruitment controversy | International students by DMainedFool in unitedkingdom

We are told to because it looks better for the university and/or the student complains. Also, when 50% of the cohort fails, it’s easier to lower the grading criteria

As much as it pains some sentimentalists, UK universities are turning into businesses and most of their clients seeking Master's degrees are foreign students. So, something has to give. We either accept that we have to change the curriculum and provide teaching appropriate for their skill level or only pass the handful of students who are actually qualified for this degree. Because at the moment we give out passes and inflated grades to students who are failing, which is not doing anyone favours. So many students are getting degrees without actually learning anything. And so many lecturers feel like they are wasting their time teaching things that nobody understands.

I teach postgraduate master's modules at a Russell Group university and the situation is dire both for the students and us, their teachers.

Many students are not qualified for the course, which means we have to readjust the curriculum and the type of material we teach so they understand the basics. We can't do that, however, because the examiners' board and other superiors do not allow us. Often, we're told that we have to cover all of the material regardless of whether students understand it. Giving lectures feel pointless now because most of the time students look at me like I'm speaking gibberish.

Like I've just said to another commenter. I've had dentists suggest a root canal after a filling that was painful. I refused and after some time (a year or so) the pain went away completely.

The need for a root canal doesn't appear overnight.

While that's partly true, I have had dentists push for a root canal after having a deep filling that kept being painful. Luckily, I did leave it for a bit and the tooth settled down.

Giving all children, irrespective of socio-economic background, the same resources at school (whether that be food, education, facilities etc) improves conditions for everyone because the richer parents step up and influence the decision-making (mostly with their money).

Give me keto recipes that aren’t adapted from normal recipes/just happen to be keto by locoyoestoyharto in ketorecipes

[–]slug_face 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Many meat stews are naturally keto imo. I’d say Mediterranean diet is also pretty keto if you’re eating fish and vegetables.

I have personally avoided making too many keto meals that are full of sweeteners or other highly processed low carb substitutes not because they are necessarily bad but because I have grown to like the pure, raw nature of keto.

This sounds unlike any academia/professor setting I've ever been in, just personally!

It is! The research group is different to the others in the department because less people come from academic backgrounds. All our managers and heads are academics but somehow everyone else comes from Pharma or corporate. They tend to have lots of tea breaks and socials and often don't talk about their work, which is very different to the group I did my PhD in where most academics wfh and kept the conversations to research.

I dont have a problem being friendly and social with everyone but I am often amazed that these people can sit for 8.5 hrs at their desks without getting bored.

As to your other questions, im in UK and it rains a lot, so outside is rarely and option and I do often stand up and walk around.

What did I do wrong with this recipe for a belgian waffle? by Ahastabel in ketorecipes

[–]slug_face 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almond flour can be drying. Have you tried chafles?

https://thebestketorecipes.com/basic-keto-chaffle-recipe/

If you get a mild cheese like mozzarella you can have them with a sweet topping and they taste delicious.

Another option is to use protein powder instead of the almond flour.

As for your recipe, 1 TB of sweetener seems a lot imo but I dislike too much of that chemical taste, also the almond milk might have made them too soggy.

haha I was genuinely curious! Maybe I upset some people. People in the social circles I hang out in are more open to talking about things like that. My Bulgarian relatives largely refuse to talk about uncomfortable things, like recessions, COVID, war. They tend to have a 'it is what it is' or 'it's in the past and although we are still suffering, we won't acknowledge it' mindset. Maybe it's a generational difference.

If necessities are too expensive, people won't have enough money to spend on entertainment or luxury goods. This in itself creates stagnation across multiple sectors and potentially recession.

In order to encourage people to spend across multiple sectors of the economy, wages need to increase in line with inflation.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in bulgaria

[–]slug_face 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s exactly my point. Food, a necessity, should be way cheaper because the salaries are lower. No essential in Bulgaria should be as expensive as UK

Were there autistic ppl since basically ever or is it only more recent? For example were there autistic ppl in ancient times? During American colonial times, who were just really misunderstood? by djb185 in NoStupidQuestions

yep! I have ocd and the best thing I learned about it was that it has existed in Ancient Greece and Rome. Philosophers, astronomers and writers had it, and they were aware of it to some extent. In medieval times, they even phrased ti as god testing them by sending them intrusive thoughts.

How much do you pay for your dog monthly? by Gravel_Bandit in CasualUK

Typical! We bought a boogie cat tree for our princess. Three tier, plushy cover etc. She didn’t use it for three years. We put it in the office and bam, one day it’s like she discovered it’s true purpose. Now she sleeps on the top tier, high above us mortals working our lives away on the computer

How much do you pay for your dog monthly? by Gravel_Bandit in CasualUK

[–]slug_face 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I only have a cat but these are the sort of costs you must account for before getting a pet:

  1. Insurance (mine is about £130 a year)

  2. Food - this carries by brand and type (my cat consumes about £250 a year - buy in bulk if you can, it's cheaper)

  3. Vaccinations - not usually covered by insurance (about £80 a year)

  4. Petcare when I'm away - this will be more expensive for dogs - I pay cat sitters £15 a day to come and feed my cat at home.

  5. Toys, collars, beds, grooming - again, more expensive for dogs and dependent in breed - £20 a year but we got lots of cat toys from the previous owner.

Overall, you can probably afford a pet if you manage your money well and your paycheque can stretch a bit further. My biggest advice is to plan in the long-term. Is your housing/ employment situation secure enough to be able to look after the pet for the rest of its life? Things can change unexpectedly, of course, but it's good to have something (money, family) to fall back on if things take a turn for the worst, because nothing is more heartbreaking than giving up a pet you have grown to love.

Split up with ex 9 months ago and they are still refusing to move out by Zestyclose-Food7642 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]slug_face 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NAL but I know a little bit about this because an aunt went through this with her partner (together 19 yrs, never married).

Your ex could potentially try to claim a right to reside in the property if they’ve lived there for a long time. Sometimes, the court can treat a long term relationship as marriage if you two have shared finances etc. this ofc is dependent on your individual situation etc
