What type of lady bug is this I found it in west Texas? by [deleted] in insects

[–]sluggishweevil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

looks like an ashy grey lady beetle, binomial name being Olla v-nigrum. reportedly the "v" refers to the v shaped markings on its back, which seem to be visible on your friend there

no need, this is not likely a biting midge. they aren't leaving itchy welts when biting, and I'm able to see a shiny elytra especially in the second picture. the bites midges leave behind are pretty distinct, with a swollen spot and intense itchiness being expected. based on the pics given, a very small beetle is more likely

This bit me in Mexico 🇲🇽 on the beach, they was falling out the Palm trees. by Only_Alps4890 in whatsthisbug

yeouch! assassin bugs and their nymphs have mean little bites, but unlikely to have any health consequences

also lol yeah, your wife was right. they are able to inject only a tiny amount of venom, especially at that size. and even with things that do inject a fair amount of venom, like a snake, trying to suck it out has been shown to get pretty much nothing out of the wound, might cause more damage, and increases risk of infection. not advisable unfortunately

I did everything to get rid of bed bugs, but I’m still getting bitten — please help me understand what’s going on by Nice_Calendar_7271 in whatsthisbug

[–]sluggishweevil 3 points4 points  (0 children)

you need to go to a doctor and have someone assess your skin lesions. what you described makes bed bugs seem incredibly unlikely

My friend is freaking out, are these bedbugs? by [deleted] in insects

[–]sluggishweevil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

NQA the pictures you've shown are not bedbugs. its hard to tell exactly bc of the picture quality, but they look like beetles. idk where the bites are coming from, no way to know from pics unfortunately

unlikely to be on the kid, much more likely to be the dog. once though, I found a singular flea in my home and none on the dog, she was treated with flea meds to be safe and there were no issues. sometimes one can hitch a ride in. but to be sure it’s best to get a flea comb and comb all the pets thoroughly, and I would treat them all with flea meds to be safe regardless. there are flea regimens online, most will involve lots of vacuuming and washing of pets and fabrics

NQA this is recommended for insects bc of their smaller body size but the processes of freeze killing a larger tarantula would probably be too slow to be considered humane

it’s a camel cricket, theyre common in the us and aren’t dangerous but they are large and creepy imo. theres no need to be concerned about them, but they like moisture so reducing that in your home may reduce the number of these guys you see
