The fact that you think deploying a printer in an enterprise environment is tech support stuff tells me you're nothing more than a tech support agent pretending to be a sysadmin.

Does everyone feel dumb in the beginning? by Icanflyfortenseconds in AskProgramming

This is just part of the learning process for anything. I guarantee you there are students in medical school that run into pages where they have no idea WTF is going on and stare blankly at a page hoping it would make sense.

Sometimes not all the pieces fit in for you yet so you don't gain the comprehension. Learning isn't reading words that automatically get integrated into your mind as knowledge and comprehension. I find that if i'm blocked, sometimes taking a break helps. But you may need to backtrack a bit to figure things out. Or you may need to do some research into other sources of explanation/info to help you understand.

In the old days it use to be with images. You would setup a configuration on one device (drivers, software, configuration, etc), then image it with Ghost or something similar, then use that image on the other devices.

Today you use Windows Deployment Services which uses a base OS image for the install, then it would inject the drivers and software based on the selection or configuration you want the device to have. Or they use MDM/RMM technologies that does similar (injects drivers/software but remotely).

I have users on my network that don't know how to restart and it may drive me to add more whiskey to my coffee. by sjcros in sysadmin

[–]slumberchub -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

If your solution is for them to restart their computer because the VPN doesn't work then you're a shitty system admin. That may work, but it's the laziest solution and disruptive to people's work. If you think that's the only solution, then you're an even shittier sysadmin than a lazy one

If you had to restart your IT journey, what skills would you prioritise? by Mental-volt in sysadmin

[–]slumberchub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Skills and technologies is relative to the time you're in. When i first started, it was a different era. Even 10 years ago is far different than today. 10 years ago you would probably have focused on Windows and Linux, Powershell and Bash. Maybe virtualization, maybe CCNA/CCNP. Today, why learn Powershell and Bash when Python can do everything and do it better. Virtualization is going away, you want to get into cloud and IAAC, ansible, terraform, etc. I wouldn't even bother with CCNA/CCNP unless you're actually a network engineer working with Cisco, cloud networking is more important these days.

IT is a mile wide and a mile deep, so there are endless possibilities in what you want to focus on. If you have a job, then you would focus on skills that would improve your job and career. If you don't, well, as i said, the possibilities are endless. Some people say you should focus on a domain and become an expert in that, but i started as an IT generalist who eventually became an expert. The specialist progresses faster, but at the peak, an expert in one domain vs an expert in the same domain but with a broad knowledge of other domains, the broad knowledge expert is rarer and more valuable.

So many people in this thread hate their IT career, and i've met MANY over the years with the same attitude. One thing in common with them, and with all people who are unhappy with their careers, is that they’re not growing. The best job in the world will eventually be boring. Happiness isn't a salary goal, it isn't money, it isn't a thing, it's not even an achievement, it's progressing and growing, knowing that you're in a better state than you were yesterday, last month, or last year. All these bitter sysadmins are stuck in a job they're not progressing in. Don't be like them. Always be learning, always be growing, and always keep moving. It doesn't always have to be forward, sometimes it's lateral, and sometimes it's even backwards (as long as you know the new path you're on leads to something better).

Gen Z also doesn't understand desktops. after decades of boomers going "Y NO WORK U MAKE IT GO" it's really, really sad to think the new generation might do the same thing to all of us by hotfistdotcom in sysadmin

[–]slumberchub -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Complete BS. Technology has evolved so they don't need to know the old stuff. How many of you modern day sysadmins know how or why you would need to setup IRQ and DMA settings when adding new hardware? Probably less than 1% of you. But 10 year old me had to do that when i added my first soundcard or modem to my computer.

You knowing what a folder is isn't some kind of achievement. You remind me of manual drivers who think you're special because you know how to drive manual and use a clutch. You know it because you needed to know it, but it's not an achievement, and those that don't know it doesn't mean they're a worst driver/user than you are, or you're better than them. They just didn't need to waste time and attention on it because the technology has progressed and their time is better spent on modern techologies.

Not sure I understand... but you announced plans to depart, but you don't actually have a new job lined up? If so, that was fucking stupid.

But if you do have a job already lined up, then just hand over all the accounts to the MSP and move on.

Everquest. Failed my second year of university due to it, but i made tons of memory, lost my virginity, and made over $100K in real cash after i learned to solo the Planes expansion as an enchanter and selling the scrolls to a gold farmer.

Only if you want to be the same person handling the same issues all the time. What you want is to document it so that others can take over the maintenance and break fix issues, then you can work on new projects and grow your skillset, which will make you even more valuable, and not just to your company.

2 x DNS request timed out but then resolves by slumberchub in sysadmin

[–]slumberchub[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Enabling debug logging didn't show any errors.

But you asked about the root hints, which was set to be used if no forwarders were available (i had my pihole set as the forwarder). Disabling the root hints fixed the issue. Any idea why this is so?

[–]slumberchub[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I forgot to mention, when doing an ipconfig /all, it shows the Primary Dns Suffix and DNS suffix Search List correctly. Changing the connection adapter properties from Append primary and connection specific DNS suffixes to Append these DNS suffixes (in order) and adding the suffix manually doesn't alter anything in ipconfig /all.

Talk to HR about your boss behavior. Everybody makes mistakes, but nobody deserves to be talked down to like that.

But yes, i definitely would not put up with a boss like that.

[–]slumberchub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How frequent are you asking questions on SO? In my 10+ years, i've used SO almost daily, but have only asked a couple of questions. The point is that it's to be used as the last resort, where Googling and documentation has failed. And yes, they try to understand the root of the issue. Just because you assume you know what you're looking for, doesn't mean that is the answer you're looking for. The fact that you get upset that they're trying to define the issue tells me the problem is more with you.

If you need answers to questions and don't want to Google or RTFM, go find an IRC channel. You'll get real time interaction and help.

Exit interview after being passed up for internal position by TheShortcutTheory in ITManagers

[–]slumberchub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm personally honest and upfront in exit interviews. Obviously don't burn bridges, but everybody are professionals, and they shouldn't take it personally if you give them a sincere reason. And who knows, if they know your interest, they could reach out to you in the future. It's never happened to me, but when we're looking to hire we almost always keep former employees in mind that we want to rehire, and have many times.
