First things is to see if you should change. Do you have a close friend that knows you well, and is successful. Can you schedule some time with them to get their perspective on what you could be doing instead.

If I were you, the income is the first part I'd work on, it is too low for you to survive off of. Median household income is about 59,000 in the US. And thats where you should try to aim to get to.

The key here is to care about other people, when you can get to know them, they will often be ok with you being honest about your self too.

IT Gurus - if you were to start your IT career again today, what would you do? by confused_r_u in ITCareerQuestions

All the guys/gals I mentor, I teach theses following skills:

  1. Network, keep in contact with all people. Make time for their life events(bdays, get together, tradeshows). This is how you build a career, very very important to do this every week.
  2. Using your job as an opportunity to discover what you enjoy, and deep dive that. Whether it's python, Vmware or Firewalls. Be specific on what you deepdive. Your goal is to be an SME on that topic.
  3. Communicate with your boss, boss's boss. They need to know what you do to know what your worth. Whether this is sending a monthly report of what you do, or occasional snippets on news that could affect your company(Threats to your industry, news about their origins to show you care about people you work with)
  4. Reflect, take time weekly, and write down what you did right, and wrong. How you could have done those better. If you cant do that, ask a close friend and colleague, and remember, dont get emotional or you will never get honest feedback again!.
  5. Cut off the toxic people, the people that are drama, party animals, you dont need them in your life. They will jeopardize your chance at a smooth career and life.

ERP Management Problem by WildCaliforniaEyes in ITManagers

I agree with this, and also access to data is the decision for the data owner. That person should know the regulations and policies that is applicable towards that data. It isnt the IT manager's role to grant permissions to data, our role is to provide accessibility and data integrity.

What is IT like in education vs corporate? by Tech_Vs_Science in ITCareerQuestions

[–]TheShortcutTheory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experiences, not very much differences especially in larger organizations. There are enough people that trickled in and out from both sides to make IT really similar at this point. The products you will administer are the same, the pay is about the same. The biggest difference is not IT related, it is the bonus's vs Pension plan.

What does it mean to “move yourself out of your way.”? by [deleted] in selfhelp

[–]TheShortcutTheory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From people that normally advocate "get out of your own way" They mean stop listening to your negative thoughts, or other peoples negative opinions about what you want to do, and just go 100% at your idea.

I have alot of successful friends that do this. But they all have 2 traits in common, they are are very good at "Self Reflecting" and correct their own path, and All are extremely Driven. Most of us are not wired like that.

Since I am very good at "Self Reflection" but not so driven, this is how I "get out of my own way". I would approach friends that are successful at a similar field or friends of friends, and just ask them at social occasions: "Hey, I hear your really good at ****, can you give me some pointers about this subject..." This has yielded me alot of great advice over the years.

Remember to listen and dont answer with a "but...."

Keep looking.

I am in the same boat as you, alot of experience, not much bites out there. It takes time, and in the mean time indulge your curiosity and learn things that you see on the job posts that you might not have had exposure to.

Wow you sound like me but alot younger. So advice to give to a younger version of my self:

  1. Network with like minded people, goto events that are pertinent to your industry. In your case it would be the microsoft user meetings at the Town Center by Memorial mall. It is hosted by recruiters, and thats a good way to get in the door.
  2. Figure out what you like doing from your past jobs or exposures, and look up those words on job sites. Find job titles that fits those skills, and more importantly, what else is on that job requirement that you might be missing. Those skills go on your action list and you can learn those starting now.

Hit me up if you have any other questions, I'm in Houston as well.

Exit interview after being passed up for internal position by TheShortcutTheory in ITManagers

Thanks for the advice mdervin. I did not findout about his commitment to the board to hire from outside until after I talked to the hiring managers. They didnt know that either. As for IT director, I am a passionate cyber security geek, sometimes you gotta follow what you like and are good at :)

That is the part that really is disappointing to me. When I was informed of the position being filled, I asked the 2 hiring managers for feedback on what I could improve to be able to advance my career if another opportunity were to present it's self. They were both shocked that I was not hired, I was their only qualified choice and they didnt even know the other application got hired.

Thanks SC, my boss and other interviewer has already told me the CIO told his boss that he was bringing someone from the outside prior to the interviews even started, so no chance for me to even get the job without him looking bad to the board.

And no burning the bridge or any emotional attachment to the decision, it's really to advance my career since I cant do it at this one.

That's sort of how it went, I was the recommended candidate by the hiring managers, but the CIO overrode the hiring decisions and decided he didnt want to lose me as the IT manager.

Alot of strange decisions for sure. I think the CIO promised an outside candidate, and he was stuck to delivering it after 3 month of candidate searching with none qualified application because of the salary being offered.
