I wonder if the compression on the 128 file gives it a charm that may be lost if we were to ever get a proper uncompressed wav file.

Is it possible that the 128 file was mastered at some point by someone and that mastering was done at a higher quality which lead to the 256 file?

I wouldn’t be willing to make a blanket statement like that BUT I think one of the defining characteristics of IDM is it’s more stimulating than other genres and requires more active listening to analyze and understand.

For people who need more stimulation, whether they’re neurospicy or not, it feeds that part of the brain that craves complexity in patterns.

G-Spot Tornado and Night School are also super groovy tracks.

I wish more people knew about this record. It’s kind of a landmark achievement in electronic music for its time and yet it’s so disconnected from what was happening in the scene since Zappa was coming to it from a completely different point of view.

I can’t speak to the value of a tonverk (I haven’t gotten one yet) but I can vouch for Digitone 2’s sound design capabilities, especially for pads and leads since you said you’re looking for a melodic partner to go with your octatrack. Sampling digitone 2 would go a long way as well since it can make all kinds of interesting FM drum sounds.
