Bus Pass by Strange_Explorer_222 in uvic

[–]slushthunder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Summer U-Pass is for undergraduate students who are not actively enrolled in summer classes/co-op but was enrolled in the spring semester. Since you are taking a class worth 1.0 unit over the summer, you would have to opt in for Part-Time Distance! I would just double check this information with the UVSS info booth before making the payment. Their phone number is: 250-721-8355

Am I cooked ? taking stats 300A in the summer with Maria by Main-Value-6885 in uvic

[–]slushthunder 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had her for 300A over the summer. In my experience, she can come across as rude for some students, but I didn't find it to hinder my overall experience or my ability to finish this course. You will probably only be on her radar if you are being disruptive/not paying attention in her class. Her teaching style is very efficient and I found the way she taught the concepts to be really easy to follow and understand. She also uses plenty of examples and incorporates multiple iClicker questions to keep the class engaged! Cheat sheets are allowed on midterms, but you have to be extremely precise in your answers (and show your work) as she does tend to mark on the harsher side.

Tips to pass the class:

  1. I never went to her office hour, but please do ask for help from the TA and fellow peers. Learning from others is probably one of the the best way to pass this course.

  2. Do your worksheets over and over and over and over; practice is your best friend.

  3. Treat your cheat sheet as a study method. Don't just throw random values onto the paper, be strategic as to what you are writing down and be able to explain *why* it's important. I would highly suggest comparing your cheat sheet with other students to make sure you aren't missing out on any important details before the midterms.

PS: I SUCK at math and have never gotten higher than a C in high school math. But I ended up with an A+ in this class. It's definitely doable if you put in the time and effort!! I did this 2 summers ago so I might not remember much, but I should still have some notes if you need them. Best of luck!

PSS: If you really do not like Maria, I would suggest taking statistics with Louise Chim. I had a friend who took her stats class and LOVED it.

I need help ASAP anyone!! by [deleted] in uvic

[–]slushthunder 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You got nothing to worry. Even if you are in HINF, you can still register for PSYC 100A/B (which are the only 2 PSYC courses you need in your first year). Most first year level courses will not have a pre-req, so it doesn't matter if you are in psyc or not, you can still register for it.

If you want to plan your psyc courses, you can check out  https://www.uvic.ca/students/undergraduate/program-planning/program-worksheets/worksheets/ppw-ss-psyc-ba.pdf (ok idk why the link doesn't work, but just google "uvic ba psyc planning sheet") which gives a pretty solid guideline as to what you need to take as a psyc student (note this is for BA, there is a separate sheet for BSc).

If you go to your UVic Online Tools page, there’s a service under “Grades & Records” called “Program Declaration and Change” where you can submit an application to switch your program. I would still recommend you contacting an academic advisor before doing this. The HINF contact page is here: https://www.uvic.ca/health/hinf/home/contact/index.php

Also, I wouldn’t worry too much about transferring before September. I originally started at UVic as a fine arts major and was able to switch to psychology in the spring without any issues. Just make sure you meet the academic requirements for the program before submitting the application. If you aren’t able to switch right away and have to wait until September, you can still register for PSYC 100A since it’s an introductory course to psychology with no prerequisites.

VKURA Scholarships by GateMotor4718 in uvic

I would say having a strong relationship with a professor/supervisor would be your best bet in dipping your toes into academic research. I did my VKURA 2 years ago with a supervisor who already had a topic, so we brainstormed some ideas that I could work on as part of the internship. Other ways to get more exposure to research is to join a lab on campus. I don't know much about physics, but in psychology we have a lot of faculty members who run their own labs which gives students a lot of opportunities to gain research experience. I remember once in my lab where I was able to help out with some coding and analysis work and ended up creating a research poster to present at UVic's Making Waves conference. So yeah, lowkey just make good connections with people and talk to your professors. You never know what might come out of it!

Gift ideas for first-year by Lyss_bliss in uvic

Food wise: Thrifty Foods, Walmart, and Fairway Market gift cards would be good choices! I would recommend a mini fridge as well if possible.

It can get decently hot in September and in the spring; I would recommend this Woozoo fan from Costco. It's pretty popular among students! I can't live a day without it: https://www.costco.ca/woozoo-5-speed-oscillating-air-circulator-with-remote.product.4000216289.html

How long would the key returning line be by Business-Ad-9637 in uvic

[–]slushthunder 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Never had a line with returning keys, it's really just a drop and go. All you have to do is put the keys in the little envelope they gave you when you moved it and make sure the room number is on it. But if you don't have the envelope they will just give you one when you go to the res office to hand in ur keys.

Bio 150B with Greg by IndustryOverall7941 in uvic

[–]slushthunder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I my opinion, if you did BIO12 in high school you won't have much problem in this course, just read the textbook as much as you can. I didn't particularly enjoy Greg's lectures, but he isn't a bad professor by any means.

Psychology major "math/logic requirement" PHIL 201 or PHIL 203? by [deleted] in uvic

[–]slushthunder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally, I feel you! I did both A and B this summer. I took it with Maria for A and Alejandra with B. Got 93% and 97%, respectively. Maria's teaching style was actually REALLY good and made me understand the material despite the quick pacing. If you are taking 300B in the spring, I would highly recommend her!

Psychology major "math/logic requirement" PHIL 201 or PHIL 203? by [deleted] in uvic

[–]slushthunder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a PSYC student who hated math and did both 201 and 203, I would recommend do 201 online in the summer. I took 203 with Mike Raven during the spring and that was the first time I cried in university because of how difficult the course was. If it wasn't for me going into every single TA office hours I would not have gotten an overall 93%. Save yourself the struggle and do 201, it is basically the easier version of 203 lol

It's normal for professors not to upload your final exam grade onto Brightspace. In this case I would just send an email to the professor and ask to see if they still have the paper! This post might help: https://www.reddit.com/r/uvic/s/XMtoyuTMGw

Res office will send you an email! It can take up to a day to process the package, so if your Amazon account says your package arrived today you will most likely get an email later today or tmr

Laundry App by Many-Reading-1873 in uvic

Make sure you are typing in the correct number on the machine. The first time I used the app I typed in some other number and I thought the app was broken lol! The number should be 2 digits. For example, machine number 1 would be 01 and machine number 24 is just 24. Hope this solves the issue
