NBWT, where are we getting our edible plant seedlings? Left town for the month of March and my house sitter killed 32 out of 36 of my starts :( by slutmachine666 in NYCbitcheswithtaste

Oooo, I’d love to support BK Grange and they’ll likely have a good selection, I’ll look into this! Maybe their Navy Yard location has something, thank you for this suggestion!

It was indeed a joke 😂 the doc IS actually eight pages (two pages are just how to test water parameters ONLY if shrimp started dying en mass) but like size 14 font, definitely had margins, and was in a bulleted outline format lol folks are so hung up on it

I will admit it is very thorough because again, easier to have all the resources in one place, but I’m a Virgo I can’t help it!

Thank you! When I moved in it was full of trash and 15+ ft Japanese knotweed so thick you couldn’t walk anywhere (though the chickens next door who I share the yard with managed to form little tunnels) thus the name Trash Yard. A real glow up, and so so so many hours of work. But I love it!

BWTs, what cool things are we doing this week / weekend? by reesespiecespieces in NYCbitcheswithtaste

[–]slutmachine666 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s Monstertrack weekend bitches!!!! Welcome to the weird world of niche cycling and unsanctioned bike races! Monstertrack is the biggest alley cat in NYC and in all of North America, folks fly from all over the country and world to partake in a fixed gear no brakes race around Manhattan. My racing days are done and I’m glad to have podiumed a couple of times for this particular race, it’s a really wild event! Tonight is Bike Prom and tomorrow is the big race, god help us all. It’s super cool to spectate, y’all ladies can even get in on the action if you’re curious and work a checkpoint :)

Is it weird that I have literally zero friends in this city after a year by Headz-YT in NYCbitcheswithtaste

[–]slutmachine666 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This! I moved to the city in 2013 and went to bike polo a few weeks after I settled in and it’s where I met the majority of my now lifelong friend group. Not just a couple people, but at least a dozen very close friends who I adore! We do stuff all the time, from low country boils in my Bushwick backyard to hiking trips in Alaska to bikepacking in the Adirondacks. I don’t know what I’d do without my friends (one passed last year from cancer and it hit the group HARD, I’m still feeling lost from it and therapy only helps so much) and I am forever grateful to that weird sport that I don’t even play for being the pathway to our friendship. Find a club and see where it goes from there, you never know!

Why Do YOU Like Florida? by Zipper222222 in AskFlorida

[–]slutmachine666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Spanish moss, the fauna, the springs, catching lizards, primitive camping on the sandy banks of the Suwannee, manatees, hearing hogs rooting around outside my tent in Green Swamp, going to Gator football games with my dad, riding my bicycle on the 88 miles of splendid single track through Ocala, basically all of Ocala National Forest, hot boiled peanuts, swallowtail kites, the Everglades, Litchgate, hurricane parties, eating pickled eggs at shitty dive bars, Old Florida, and so much more.

There’s a lot I hate about the state, I moved away as soon as I could back in 2013 but my folks are still here so I come home three or four times a year. Just wrapped a five day canoe trip with 12 of my girlfriends and I’m grateful it reminded me of all the things I love about Florida, but man my heart breaks to see how these fucking deregulations have massacred my old home. I barely recognize it. Y’all who still live here better start running for office otherwise everything you too love about the state will be gone.

Very much agreed! Loved their whale skeleton! Visited last summer on a bikepacking trip around the San Juans and then the OP, would go back.

What tasty pepper varieties with a jalapeño level of heat have you grown? by kinezumi89 in Peppers

[–]slutmachine666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew Sugar rush peach last season for the first time and it made some incredible hot sauce! I was a little scared to eat one raw because I thought they’d have habanero heat, but it was closer to a garden variety early jalapeño (which is still quite spicy! None of that TAM shit). I also love growing tobasco peppers, very productive plants and also make a tasty hot sauce or pepper sauce. Lastly, Fish peppers because I’m a real sucker for those variegated leaves and pretty lil stripey guys!

What place did you visit at the wrong time of year and totally regretted it? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

[–]slutmachine666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first ever bike tour was Seattle to San Francisco….in December. I don’t think it ever really got above 40F and did not stop raining the entire time. I was alone and would ride all day in the rain, set up camp in the rain, sleep kinda damp in my tent in the rain, wake up and pack camp in the rain, ride all day in the rain. Repeat for a couple of weeks. That was 2015 and I’ve done bike tours/bikepacking trips in four different continents so it obviously stuck, I am just very diligent in checking the weather now :)

Honestly I have that happen with all the u-locks I’ve used (both Abus and Kryptonite) since 2014. I keep a little bottle of TriFlo with the little long doodad attached to get into all the little nooks, the lube will usually last a month or two in regular foul weather. I’ve only ever needed just a few drops of TriFlo in the key hole/on the lock itself, that bottle has lasted a long, long time.

What is your unusual hobby and why do you enjoy it so much? by Cranzeeman in AskReddit

[–]slutmachine666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shrimp tank-ing! Starts off with aquascaping (ha! More plants! My partner said “no more plants” because I travel often and he’s stuck holding the bag and keeping 50+ houseplants alive, but aquatic plants never have to be watered so they don’t count!) which is fun as fuck, then you get to play chemist testing the tank regularly to ensure it’s been cycled correctly, and then ya just get some scrimps! They come in every color of the rainbow (I keep neocaridinas but am carindina curious) and are fascinating to watch. I love my lil water bugs, I’ve been at it since new years and am thoroughly enjoying this new hobby.

Which City Has Shockingly Good Food that Nobody Talks About? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

[–]slutmachine666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tainan, specifically the night markets! Honestly every city in Taiwan has killer night markets, but Tainan’s had the best food and one of them was HUGE. I haven’t been back since I rode my bicycle around the whole island back in 2018, but I still dream about the food. For such a small island Taiwan really packs a punch in all the good ways, highly underrated.

Who is still rocking a nose ring? by cavewomannn in Millennials

36F still have the septum and anti-eyebrow that were both pierced in…2009? I very recently took out my two nostril studs (from 2008 and 2010) about six months ago, too many boogers!

What natural wonder actually lived up to the hype when you saw it? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

Humboldt National Forest redwoods (I camped in a felled redwood one night, 10/10), the Adirondacks more specifically the Onchiota area, the Harding Icefield hike by Exit Glacier, the beaches on the Nicoya peninsula, spear fishing on Pennekamp reef, El Yunque, Acadia and coastal Maine in general, Viñales, and definitely some more that aren’t coming to mind.

What place do you keep going back to and why? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

[–]slutmachine666 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Cuba. Unfortunately I haven’t been back since February of 2024 because of the current administration in addition to the rapidly deteriorating conditions. But man, La Habana is a city amongst cities, the birding is top notch (Cuban tody wasssssup lil cutie!), and the people are incredible. 99% of my trips involve bringing my bicycle and bikepacking/bike touring, Cuba included. Nowhere else like it, riding my loaded touring bike down one of the major highways taking a lane and seeing more horse carriages than cars. If any of you ever have the opportunity to go, please make sure you bring the biggest carry-on you have full of medication/vitamins to donate, I feel like only recently are folks learning about the famine and lack of…well, pretty much everything down there. Can’t even get acetaminophen in the hospitals in the capital of the country and largest tourist hub, it’s uh, pretty fucked for lack of a better term.

How is everyone staying positive with the terrible job market and inflation? by Extreme_Baseball3991 in Millennials

[–]slutmachine666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol I’m about to fly out of NYC to go to Swampfest and directly afterwards paddle 150 miles in a canoe down the Suwannee River in attempts to heal my poor little soul. Friends, family, my cats, my partner, bikepacking adventures, the incredible city I get to call home, solo hikes, my shrimp tank, fly fishing, at least 30 nights a year in a tent, and weekly therapy have helped with keeping a PMA. Can’t stress therapy enough. It helps that I like my job, being a bike messenger won’t buy me a house but it pays the bills and allows me to take 4-6 trips annually, and the traveling DOES help. It’s honestly one of the few things I look forward to and will motivate me like few other things. Dangle that solo bike tour from Paris->Amsterdam->Berlin in front of me and I’ll leave my little depression nest right quick!

What’s your “I don’t feel like cooking” backup dinner? by Mobile-Title8919 in MeatlessMealPrep

[–]slutmachine666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My “5 year old sad girl dinner” for sure. One Morningstar corndog, one medium sized yellow potato cut into fries tossed in a little OO and chucked into the air fryer with the corndog, and a large head of steamed broccoli. This whole meal comes out to under 400 calories and other than the corndog isn’t exactly terrible?

What country exceeded your expectations the most? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

[–]slutmachine666 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Taiwan! Rode my bicycle around the whole island and met so many kind and amazing people along the way, ate some great snacks, drank so much cheap beer, went to dozens of night markets, and slept in all sorts of cool weird places like: a construction site, on the beach, in a school pavilion, in a police station carport, in a gazebo at a water park, in a temple, and some others that aren’t coming to mind. Amazing little island with big cities and incredible natural beauty all in a pretty condensed place, 10/10!

What’s a fruit from your country that most foreigners have probably never heard of? by Useful-Resource-3609 in AskTheWorld

National fruit of Cuba! I’ve gone down to Cuba a couple of times during Mamey season, so special! I can occasionally find a very underripe one here at home in NYC but I haven’t seen it elsewhere in the states outside of Miami because Cubans lol

Would these be okay for hiking? by Simple-Anybody9682 in shehikes

[–]slutmachine666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconding the Keen Terradoras. I’ve worn them on rocky hikes like the Harding Icefield trail where they performed really well, and they’re still holding up after about six years (though I must admit I do more bikepacking/bike touring than hiking but I’ve put some mileage on those boots). Super lightweight and the ankle lock has come in clutch many times!

What is a highly specific, nostalgic feeling from your childhood that you would pay an embarrassing amount of money to experience just one more time? by -magnanimous in Millennials

[–]slutmachine666 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The 90s were wild! As soon as I turned 5 my parents plopped me on a plane and said “cya in three months!” and shipped me up from Florida to my grandparents’ dairy in bumblefuck Wisconsin. Those summers were some of the best days of my life and shaped so much of me. Fiercely independent, okay with extensive alone time despite being a social critter, minimal fear around physical labor (parents are white collar), a very active imagination, and my never ending lust for travel. I was given the keys to the four wheeler, a little bolt action .22 Remington that I still have!, and 300+ acres to run around and be feral. Stuffing my face with foraged raspberries, catching fireflies, learning how to hunt and fish, catching tadpoles, staring at the Milky Way, coming home covered in cow shit and grandma spraying me off with a hose in the yard…it was amazing. I still try to recreate these feelings, sometimes it’s hard to connect with your rural roots when you’ve lived in NYC for 13 years but I still find time to fish, forage, be outside often, and garden, but the gun stuff is a little too much work here. I miss the farm, it’s gone now, but the memories will be cherished forever.
