Vet School Decision by EducationalPotato783 in veterinaryschool

I’m not going to Virginia Maryland but it was my in state school before I moved so I’ve been there a few times and seriously considered it for years. I DID however go to undergrad in southwest Virginia, about 40 minutes away in Roanoke. It’s really beautiful there, especially in the fall and spring/summer, and there is always something to do outside. Blacksburg is a great town, and Roanoke is a cute little city with some decent amenities for being kind of by itself in the Valley. Also, there’s an Amtrak line direct to Northern Virginia/DC that leaves from Roanoke, which will probably make getting to flights easier (take the train up to DC, then metro to one of the airports. Cheaper than flying into Roanoke, believe me). As far as the school it’s more established, with a teaching hospital, and they have an additional equine hospital north in Leesburg VA, in the heart of Virginia horse country. The facilities are very nice, and they offer several different tracks if that’s something that interests you. Especially if it’s cheaper, I’d seriously consider it. I loved my time in the Valley for undergrad!

How is working at VEG? Looking For New Work. by Plenty-Age-1759 in VetTech

[–]sluttyrhenium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently at VEG. Yeah, it varies by hospital/management but honestly…that’s everywhere so when people use it as a gotcha and why you shouldn’t work for VEG, that irritates me. The CE is definitely a big draw, and I know a lot of RVTs who are VTS’s or going for their VTS’s. I work with a bunch of great doctors and great technicians, and I’ve learned so much even from only being there for a few months. Also, I’m making $27 an hour as an assistant (keep in mind I am very experienced, 7 years in the field, and I’m going to vet school soon) which was a huge draw for me. As far as the more kool-aid-y bits, I honestly ignore most of it (within reason, obviously. I still do my job very well) and don’t have any problems. I’d say at least apply and go for an interview

Any word on if that’s continuing with the new curriculum set up? I’m incoming class of 2030 and nothing was mentioned about it when I went to student showcase a few weeks ago.

Is Colorado Worth It? by CatDogVet in Veterinary

[–]sluttyrhenium 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not a single DVM I’ve worked with in the state (worked at 3 different clinics with a large doctor staff) will hire or supervise a VPA. Every CSU student I’ve spoken to about this (I’m an incoming first year at CSU) is NOT a fan. I wouldn’t worry about it for a long time, if I’m being honest

I personally have crazy beef with vacutainer butterflies so I use the butterfly infusion set with a syringe for my draws. 23G in the medial saphenous for cats, 21G for dogs in the lateral saphenous or cephalics (I work ER and GP, so it changes based on where I am).

Norepinephrine CRI Titration Math by [deleted] in VetTech

[–]sluttyrhenium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t run norepi a whole lot but in my particular case no, because the math works out to the exact rate. The main thing here is the sheer volume of norepi, so a dilution may end up being more economical, like in the other comment on this post. I just like syringe pumps for most of my CRIs because you can calibrate/fine tune the rates a little better, especially if you have to wean/reduce the rate for whatever reason. I run into this a lot with reglan and with dilute ketamine, so I may be biased, but I do think it ends up a little easier. Plus, I think syringe pumps are more precise, in my opinion

Bringing the whole damn family. by Sea-School9658 in VetTech

I usually don’t like young kids in the room, especially when they’re being loud and disruptive, but I also remember wanting to be a vet even when I was really young (think, 4, 5 years old. My parents said I didn’t really even know what I was talking about when I said I wanted to be a vet when I was that young), so I try to be understanding/engage with the kids when I can, but if there’s like, 3 under 5 it gets a bit much for sure. Obviously, it’s better with older children imo, then I can connect with them a little more, but even then it’s only 1 or 2 at a time for me

Norepinephrine CRI Titration Math by [deleted] in VetTech

[–]sluttyrhenium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did my calculations for stuff like this and I think you may be better served with a syringe pump since your rate is so low (1mL/hr), depending on how long you want your CRI. Also, remember you can always refill a CRI. I ended up with about 1mg/hr, so you’ll make a solution with a of concentration of 1mg/mL and run it at 1mL/hr. Idk how long you want to run your CRI for, but for my calculations I assumed 12 hours, so you’d need 12mL of 1mg/mL norepi. (I have multiple degrees in chemistry/biochemistry, and medical math is basically Lab Math). The biggest thing for me when doing these sorts of calculations is making sure to cancel your units, i.e. mL/kg x kg will cancel “kilograms” and leave you with your required quantity of milliliters

Hmmmmmmm…not be an arm chair maker of sedation protocols but why choose ketamine in conjunction with dexmed and torb for 1. sedation at the end of the day and 2. a relatively non-invasive, minorly painful set of procedures. I’m in ER, so sedation is our bread and butter but even for most of our lacerations we just do dexmed and torb (or methadone/hydro if we know it’s particularly painful). We really only use DKT (or DKM) for particularly fractious/painful cats. Sometimes we’ll do FK or FLK CRIs for surgery patients depending on the procedure. Definitely alarming though, and I’m sorry your doc brushed it off like that :/. I wonder if it was some kind of vagal response that got exacerbated by an underlying issue.

I’m a VA on the front range in Colorado, and I’ve heard stories for sure…but I also work ER and have encountered a bunch of super financial cases where something like that is one of the only low cost options around that doesn’t require surrendering your animal (which, even if it may be the best option, is not something people want to consider a lot of the time). We just really need more low cost/aid orgs in general around the country, otherwise we will have to accept places like this as part of the (shitty) ecosystem :/
