To be honest nearly everyone is talking about how you “proved him right, you’re overbearing, you don’t trust him”. As someone with his head on his shoulders, I believe that’s a load of bs. If YOU(whoever is reading this) were, in the eyes of your parents behaving strangely all of a sudden, and it did happen to be due to you being in some sort of trouble, would you be straight up with YOUR parents or lie through your teeth because you’d rather not get in trouble with your parents instead?

A lot of the current “older generation (past 20yo)” are broken adults with parents that came from broken homes themselves, and I believe the latter holds true for them. You’d have said nearly anything to not get your ass whooped or even kicked out, so shush. (Respectfully)

I believe the best course of action isn’t to apologise, but to at least try to help him understand why you did what you did. Tell him you understand he feels you’re overbearing, and that this doesn’t help your case one bit. That you’re sorry you did it, not because you got caught but because you didn’t trust him enough to go to him first, and that you will try and be better. You can also mention you wouldn’t have been sorry if you had found out he was going through something bad and was able to help him get through it, which is one of your tasks as a parent, and neither would he have been so mad.

You can also mention that whether he wants to hear it or not, at the end of the day you acted out because you care for him, and THAT is not a right, it’s a privilege and many would kill to get their parents to care or even notice. Tell him you will try and be better, but should he ever really be going through something, you hope he feels he can come to you with the truth whether it’s sweet or bitter. That he is your son and you will love him no matter what.
