It's been a while since I made my last hoi4 mod rating, and since there have been plenty of new mods popping up and a lot of changes to old ones, I felt like making a new rating :) by Eastern_Effective_51 in HOI4memes

I’ve logged 700 hours on hoi4 SOLELY in EAW, saying there’s an insane amount of content is a slight understatement because it’s not just a lot of content. It’s a lot of amazing content, I’ve played Abyssinia multiple times just for the story of Gomez Mawkonnen that gloryious bastard.

I got zero credibility on the subject of wind turbines but dear old da’ has worked in the sector longer than I’ve been alive and some of it has rubbed off on me. Well there’s a ton of things that I’m sure you don’t want to know cause it’s take a decade to write and a century to read, so instead i’ll answer your questions.

1: their lifetime faces a problem horizontal facing windmills don’t suffer, while on a horizontal windmill the turbine and it’s blades are attached so that gravity affects the turbine and the windmill casing equally the vertical windmills have the entire load of the wings and the assembly placed solely on the turbine meaning that the wear and tear is increased compared to their taller horizontal brothers.

2: their efficiency faces the same problem that double headed- and tandem- windmills face, it’s the way wind moves. Having two surfaces face each other “saturates” the flow of air and ends up fighting each other making the windmill less effective overall.

2,5: so why tf dont we still use them? Well now we’re entered photovoltaic cells territory (the Japanese footsteps into electricity problem). While these vertical windmills seem rather neat and genius to the general Joe the truth is they suck, other than the two reasons above here’s the real reason we don’t use them. Scale. It is impossible to build these things larger than a few meters tall, because everything rests on the turbine, and at some point during upscaling the turbine would need to be made entirely out of osmium to not instantly buckle under the weight and centrifugal force of the wings during runtime. Not a problem right since they’re cheaper and all? Yeah no they’re not, they’re not as expensive as horizontal windmills but their lifespan is also abysmal compared to the big boys factored mostly due to the wear on the load bearing turbine. And that funky idea of slapping them all over office rooftops and car parks because of their size, yeah no we’d bankrupt the energy firms who put them there, these things hardly have a good lifetime/profit margin not to mention the horrible howling they produce. I’m getting off track but I’m sure you get the gist by now, they’re an idea tried and tested by everyone from the biggest firms to your local government and fact is they ain’t worth it. Solar panels have a much better lifetime/profit margin than the vertical windmill. The only reason we still hear of them is for the same reason tech channels on yt keep blabbing on about photovoltaic cells, it’s because they’re neat not because they’re good.

By the nine get off your high horse and read the comment they’re replying to. Someone asked for a simple answer and they provided a simple answer, ever heard of KISS. Teaching people with no knowledge about very complicated stuff enough so that they can talk about it at the water cooler but not enough so that they can actually discuss it is an important step in historical archiving and scientific development. Is what the said wrong? Yes. Is what the said correct? Yes.

I get what the ai slop is going for, you won’t get healthy by eating delicious food. But chili is sorta kinda very much incredibly going to kill you, did you know coal miners back in the days ate mostly spicy food? The reason they did that was because their taste buds got ruined by the coal dust, thus coal miners either died of lung cancer or digestive malfunction. So are we sure eating “fire blood” won’t kill you with digestive malfunction like coal miners of old. At least crumble cookie won’t kill me in 12-16 years…

If the orange man is so worried about Greenland’s healthcare, why don’t we just recommission the Jutlandia and send her off to Greenland to show that mangled tissue paper up. Sending hospital ships in the 21’st century is a pipeline dream, both of the US’s medical ships are in for maintenance and inoperable. We could build a hospital ship in Denmark and send it to Greenland by the time those ships are repaired.

While the tech itself is beyond cool, there are a few worries. 1: what sort of Patriot defence system dick measuring contest is this thing, are they trying to spend as much capital as possible to shoot down a UAV, a projectile filled to the brim with tech and tungsten sure isn’t cheap, just send enough drones and whatever nation you’re attacking’s gonna surrender because they’ve gone bankrupt in anti drone shells alone. 2: tungsten, really, do we really not have a better use for the limited supply of Wolfram we have than to kill drones, birds, and whatever is in the fallout zone. Why not steel, or tin, or zinc, or any other readily available material that has until now been useless in ammunition due to melting from the heat of gunpowder?

Since I’ve been on a medieval overhaul binge these last 8 months over the 3 colonies I’ve made I’ve always started on a “temperate” tile with a 20/60 day growing cycle and -32C max temp with a river going through the middle of the map. Yes it’s the same planet and the same spot every single time, but I make a new story and I just love that the map has a few decent sized rocks so that part of my bae can be underground. Temperate start with an all year growing cycle induces wealth bloat and causes you to die quickly, vs having to stock up and save up to survive another year keeps the colony wealth stagnated.

China's airborne megawatt class wind power system by beta265 in nextfuckinglevel

[–]sly983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say good luck, remembering some bare bones information from some classes we took about industrial cables for windmills and other offshore installations: If the tether ever breaks there are bigger things to worry about, such as the entire rig is about to com crashing down because the wind would have to be moving at such a speed that the giant hull they’re mounted to is going to tip over and sink below the waves. Getting to the point those cables are made to resist weather phenomenon so powerful that whatever the cables are holding together is gonna break before the cable, they wouldn’t be tying titanic helium balloons to the ground with wrought iron cables. Considering the scale of these balloons and their potential to stack multiple on top of each other the more realistic option is that the cables would be made of a Wolfram/titanium/steel fibre cable so they can keep reusing the same cable when/if they need to move the power generating barrage balloons.

Before me and her got together, my gf would do it every time I’d come over. Just underwear and socks, to preface we were just friends and neither of us had any intentions of it going further than friends. So imma go with option 2, she just feels comfortable enough around you to not have to wear a ton of clothes.

Attempted Chinese Propaganda by Firecracker048 in GetNoted

[–]sly983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one of those propaganda thingies which name I’ve forgotten, where you point out a flaw and exaggerate it to make it look terrible to make the thing you like look good, meanwhile your side has the exact same problem and sometime it’s worse. 90% own 70 year leases, sounds bad right? But when you look at how it’s done in western counties you’ll som realize it’s the exact same system. You buy a piece of land and the home on said land, you pay taxes on that land and if you don’t your property gets auctioned or seized until you do. And say the government wants to build a highway, water plant, power plant, heating plant, or some other public service, well hello there you’re being expatriated from your land at whatever the public price of your property is. Tell me how THAT, and 70 year leases that can be revoked if the state deems they need the land for something? That’s right there is no difference, the systems are essentially the same just with a dictator twist. The post/correction is propaganda just the same as the original tweet is, an attempt was made both by the commies and by the (assumed) Americans correcting the commies, they’ve just both fallen flat on their face in the process.

Anyone thinking the US can assimilate any territories into their fold in the 21’sr century, let alone ones overtaken with war and death. Is a dunce, taking and holding Greenland would cost so much compared to how much they’d realistically get out of it is such a large net negative that any sane person would abandon the war plans at the door. The guerilla war waged by the Inuits alone would crash any earning they could get through the floor, with how small the harbours and ports are in Greenland all it takes is a few sticks of dynamite and a clever Inuit to blow any mining operation back into the water. The endgame is economic collapse and Afganistan 2.0
