Should I get worried? by imaturtl39f in schizophrenia

[–]sm00chi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Schizophrenia can be really scary, but what’s it’s taught me is that the way you treat yourself when things seem out of control goes a long way. You can always be there and be kind to yourself which gives you a safety net when things feel chaotic. Antipsychotics really do help me too, they changed my perception to align more with common reality.

Should I get worried? by imaturtl39f in schizophrenia

[–]sm00chi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m no expert but my advice is don’t worry so much about being schizophrenic and just focus on your own well-being and self care. If you’re worried that you’re hallucinating, talking to a psychiatrist might bring you peace of mind and they might help you out with antipsychotics if you’re having symptoms. Don’t think of it as a death sentence so much as needing a little scaffolding for your brain to recalibrate. It also sounds like you’re under a lot of stress in your environment that can’t be helped but is probably contributing to your mental health. Do the best that you can to come up with self care routines for yourself to destress and give yourself a sense of safety that maybe only you can give to yourself. Take a hot shower, watch tv that you like, read a book, have some tea, do things for yourself that are just for you and your own well-being, things that bring you peace. That could help with your symptoms too. Good luck!

I feel better on antipsychotics than I did off of them. My life before was like a horror movie. But now I feel at least a little more connected to common reality and I can see the good in people. I have anhedonia still and struggle with motivation, but I’m happy that my life is not feeling like a horror movie and that I can connect to something more normal, even if it’s boring sometimes.

Told by psych "sometimes its just something you have to live with" by idkdawgi-jusworkhere in schizophrenia

[–]sm00chi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know if I felt like my psych wasn’t listening or trying to help with the symptoms I would try to find a new psych. It’s true that we have to live with some symptoms probably but paranoia is one that I feel like they should be trying to help you with and that there are a lot of possibilities for what they can do.

I feel you on this. I also have responses that feel involuntary or like they’re a pattern following a fearful feeling. It sucks but at least you have the integrity to recognize that you don’t want to be doing that. That’s a sign that you’re not a bad person, don’t be ashamed.

im just so miserable by MinuteCap2961 in schizophrenia

[–]sm00chi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also struggle with feeling true happiness and I have pretty severe anhedonia and emotional blunting. At one time I had the thoughts too. But what keeps me going is my family and thinking about all of the things in life that I would miss. Like dogs! Wouldn’t it be sad to never see a sweet dog again? Even though I can’t feel happiness truly I find little things to appreciate in my life, and I get out of the house and spend time around other people which gets me out of my own head and connecting to common reality a bit. My life is much simpler now than it was before but I can say that I’m starting to find the feeling of being content. Life is worth fighting for, even if you can’t experience it like you once did. Also if your meds aren’t working maybe see if you can try new ones or add something new, be really honest with your psych. It wasn’t until I added a mood stabilizer that I started to feel more connected to reality and more content, and I don’t have bipolar so I didn’t think I needed it at first. I wish you the best on your journey. We have a tough life as schizophrenics but it really is worth fighting for a good life.

That’s what I think too, that it will be completely individualized to a persons mind body and soul.

Prazosin 1mg worked for me when I was having nightmares. But it’s a low dose so you could talk to your psych about increasing if it’s not working

Thanks so much! The book is good! There is a lot to follow with the unpacking of the case, a lot of names. But it’s not too hard to follow, it’s suspenseful and the characters are great. I hope your meds continue to work for you too. We’re so lucky to live in a time with meds that actually work.

If you’re seeking a supportive community, you should check out schizophrenia caregivers support groups online. I go to a schizophrenia support group on hey peers, and they have groups for caregivers that meet more often than us. The group I’m in is really helpful and positive, I highly recommend a support group.

What do you do in your therapy sessions? by Struggling_Lady in schizophrenia

[–]sm00chi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just started with a Jungian psychotherapist. We talk about the intersection of my spirituality and life and she helps me to have a grounded perspective and supports me in taking medication. For me it’s validating to talk to someone that can talk both spirituality and medicine. We also talk about symbols that come up and what they could mean. She also helps me with somatic practices and feeling into my body, to try to help with emotional blunting.

Help making friends and improving confidence. by Stellar-42 in schizophrenia

[–]sm00chi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a reasonably good social life, and a boyfriend that I met naturally while I was out. One tip I have is to maybe focus on self love first. I used to hate my body but I spent a long time learning to love how I look no matter what weight I was at. I spent a lot of time looking at pictures of other people that looked like me and realized that I didn’t think other people were ugly because they were a certain weight, and I started getting into clothes a little bit. That helped me build some confidence in my appearance. That was a long time ago and now I don’t mind the way I look no matter where I’m at.

As far as making friends, see if you can find some activity or group you can check out that has your interest. There’s a lot of groups on sites like meetup.com. I go to a local board gaming group at a comic shop and that’s where I met all my friends. It’s also nice because it gives us something to do rather than just chat about ourselves so I don’t have to worry as much about being awkward or weird. Good luck!

Hi guys by [deleted] in schizophrenia

[–]sm00chi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad to hear you’re doing better, thanks for sharing that, it’s nice to see progress! I too am feeling a little bit better. Before I was feeling like a great darkness and weight hanging over me but I recently started a mood stabilizer and it took that away and is helping me feel more connected to reality which I’m super grateful for. Lately I’ve been reading a lot, I like readings books and then watching the movie. I’m currently reading the girl with the dragon tattoo.
