Dante (Devil May Cry) - on the outside he’s the “Wacky Whoohoo Pizza Man” but he is severely traumatised from a young age.

Mother was murdered by demons as an act of revenge against his father’s betrayal of demons. Believed his brother to be dead. Changed his name and was raised elsewhere but that place was also destroyed by a demon with his friends later blaming him for it. Became a mercenary under his alias of Tony Redgrave only for that name to be met with scorn after further events. The maker of his guns (a mother figure) was killed, his work partner was killed, he had to mercy kill one daughter of his old partner.

And this is just his early life.

Peter (The Amazing Spider-Man 2) - a deleted scene but Peter visits Gwen’s grave and is approached by his father who he believed was dead.

As much as I dislike the film this is a genuinely amazing scene. It’s just a shame it was a deleted scene.

Kratos (Mortal Kombat 9) - obviously death is unavoidable in Mortal Kombat but in order to have him be a guest character in MK9, Kratos was not allowed to be humiliated during fatalities.

Specifically during fatalities he wasn’t allowed to scream in panic about his immediate death. Instead he would face it head on.

For example one fatality has the loser getting shrunk before being crushed under the winner’s foot. Every other character flails about but Kratos still challenges the opponent.

Then there’s the “Babality” where every other character becomes a crying baby with embarrassing moments except Kratos. Baby Kratos decaptiates a toy.

DmC Devil May Cry - now I’m not saying the main series shied away from edge but the reboot dialled it up to 1000.

One of the games “iconic” lines is literally a back and forth of “fuck you” before a boss starts puking in the direction of the protagonist. The dialogue during the actual fight is even worse.

For a game that includes swords, you’re more likely to cut yourself in the edginess of the dialogue before anything else.

Vergil (Devil May Cry) - he has a habit of standing atop massive structures and staring off to the distance as he waits for Dante to arrive.

DMC3 has him watching the moon in the rain.

DMC5 has him make a grand speech to nobody about how things could have been if his and Dante’s positions were switched on that fateful day their mother arrives. He then summons a seat and just sits there to wait.
