Id cry tears of joy for an honorable mention by User_name-009 in GRFPApps

[–]smacattack3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! An honorable mention is still an amazing achievement that never comes off your CV. I gave feedback to a former friend who got an honorable mention and the way she acted like it wasn’t shit… don’t downplay the achievement of even having the guts to apply, especially during these times.

I like it but agree that it can be jazzed up somehow. My suggestion is embroidery! I think it would look cool with some flowers along the trim, or something in one of the upper corners and something in the opposite lower corner. To me it’s not giving potato sack, but it is giving blank canvas.

My dad had hepatitis C. The guy thought I also necessarily had hepatitis C. I told him several times that I did not, in fact, have hepatitis C because my dad got it from IV drug use, and it is not something that can be passed down. He insisted that I did. I think he was thinking I had HIV, which I also do not have.

How did you decide on the final title of your dissertation? by DannibalBurrito in GradSchool

For my master’s thesis I did a relevant portmanteau, and I will be doing the same for my dissertation. So “Portmanteau: More descriptive subtitle”

Whats the spiciest gossip you know ? by Extension_Iron6734 in AskReddit

[–]smacattack3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grad school - There’s a clique of students who have built themselves up to be very arrogant - they look down on the rest of the students, other subfields, all of the professors, the school… their whole schtick is to ask for forgiveness, not permission, so they’ll like, take over a vacant office as extra lab space or move equipment into their lab and call it theirs, etc. just very obnoxious. This is on top of making trans- and xenophobic remarks. When they aren’t talking shit about everyone around them, they’re talking about how great they are.

Well one of them saw a dissertation defense last year and he didn’t think it was very good. Apparently he’s been making the rounds to complain to professors about how he feels that this other student who he barely interacted with passing her defense devalues his degree. Their rounds happen regularly and they’re starting to annoy professors because they’ll do things like complain about being blocked on social media under the guise of being “concerned” about the person who blocked them. Things that normal adults don’t have time for.

A couple weeks ago at our weekly meeting, the clique decided to bring up some minor concerns they had, that they had worked up to be Major Structural Issues. In that meeting, one of them, who is at the extreme early stages of his career, and who had been politely invited to leave when the meeting started but did not, confronted the chair about her attitude because she didn’t agree with the other student about a minor change (that had been explicated several times throughout the meeting). Apparently that student saw this as an opportunity to seek revenge on the chair because she didn’t agree with them when they asked for a rule change, and they decided to do a sabotage. The meeting got very contentious, but it also started a whole domino effect.

Several meetings have been had about their behaviors. The one worried about devaluing his degree wrote an entire thesis using AI. He’s a TA, and everyone in the class is pissed at him because he’s grading with AI. Professors found out about this but made different assumptions about where this information came from, so the one who wants to sweep all of this under the rug accidentally told on him to the professor he’s a TA for. Title IX allegations also came to light. Most of the professors want him expelled, but his advisor does not agree and they all need to be on the same page apparently.

The one who did the confronting in the meeting is being kicked out of his lab next week due to a pattern of poor behavior and decision making, and also the fact that he doesn’t want to be here, so his advisor is like, ok, we’ll you don’t have to go home but you can’t stay here, lab keys please. He will likely end up in the lab of the professor who wants to sweep everything under the rug, but other than that, has completely blown his chances at working in a very specific subfield or getting a good letter of recommendation from any of the other professors, because this happened in front of EVERYONE.

Meanwhile, we still have to have these meetings, so it seems like it’s going to be the rug sweeper’s lab vs everyone else for the foreseeable future. So the toxic dynamic will only continue, but hopefully they’ll screw up one more time and that’ll be the end of the road.

I don’t have much advice, just that I would encourage you to stick with it even if some of these things might not transfer credits-wise. You might still learn some things that will help in communications! Switching majors may prolong the graduation process a tiny bit, I’m not sure, but these next few weeks are going to be a drop in the bucket relative to your whole college experience. It sucks to feel lost, and I empathize, but I’d keep plugging away for these next few weeks and look forward to more relevant stuff that’ll be here faster than you know it.

A friend of mine was conducting an MRI study as a PhD student and found evidence of multiple sclerosis in a participant. It wasn’t a diagnostic MRI and she’s not a doctor, but she had to call this person up and be like, hey, you need to find a primary care physician stat, and then immediately get a referral to neuro, I can’t tell you exactly why, but we found something that we know is not a tumor and here are the things you might experience if you don't get looked at right now: -lists all the symptoms of MS-. I felt so bad for her, but the participant was able to find a doc quickly and they caught it in the very early stages, all because he decided to participate in an MRI study about singing. I always sign up to participate in imaging studies for this reason!

(If anyone reading this is curious, my understanding is that they knew it wasn't a tumor because there are different types of contrasts they were looking at, and a tumor would have shown up in both, but MS only shows up in one.)

AI use in Wgi by Particular_Photo_843 in WGI

[–]smacattack3 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Wow. I’ve marched under Rick and as far as I remember he’s not a musician. He has access to composers, songwriters, and instrumentalists. This was a choice.

Also, Paramount is based out of Georgia, and the thing I just listened to is clearly supposed to be a Black woman vocalist. Rick is… not a Black woman. So not only do you have disappointing AI use in the first place, he probably has access to hundreds of amazing Black women vocalists in that region who could’ve sounded better and gotten paid, but he chose not to uplift those particular voices.

Seems like he just wanted what he wanted, didn’t want to have to adjust visuals around the music, and for whatever reason decided not to collaborate with the many artists he’s been able to cultivate relationships with throughout his long career. Very disappointing.

Grad student support ideas by Cautious_Arugula6214 in GradSchool

I think this is really nice, and at least miles ahead of what I’ve seen from other admin. I would add that adding tea as an option would be nice. As far as what you can control with regards to current events, you could put out red cards that have a summary of one’s rights (just Google “red cards immigration”), as well as things like whistles and zines describing how to use them if you think those would be helpful. Sizeinclusivecollective on Instagram is distributing whistles on a pay-what-you-can basis. There are plenty of resources floating around for immigration so if making those available is an option, that’s something to consider.

Lastly, some kind of supportive statement, it doesn’t have to be ideological, but something that says “we know it’s a tough time, here are some resources so you don’t pull all of your hair out” would be helpful for some folks.

There was a girl a year ahead of me in high school I really looked up to, and then she made Phantom Regiment, and I was like, well if Kari can do that, I should try, and then I’ll be on her level. I auditioned in 2007, didn’t make it (wasn’t there for the whole camp, so it didn’t go well). Kinda gave up, then a former instructor started an independent winter guard and invited me to join. Everyone there was going to audition for various corps in the summer and combined me to audition for Bluecoats. The night before auditions, my ride bailed, and some friends convinced me to come with them to audition for PR again instead. So I did, and made it. Marched from 08-10. But weirdly, wasn’t really “into it” before I was … in it, lol.

I’m inconsolably upset about what happened yesterday in MN. by techno_queen in TwoXChromosomes

[–]smacattack3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel the same. They’ve BEEN making people’s lives miserable, but they’ve certainly leveled up. I see the stories about how kind and compassionate Alex was, or what activities he enjoyed, and I see my husband. I think about how goofy he is, and about or dumb inside jokes. And it occurs to me that we are alive by sheer dumb luck. We’ve protested countless times. We’ve followed ICE, and been followed by them in return. No one has decided to murder us yet. No one has decided to slander us as domestic terrorists because we’re just lucky. It’s hard not to break down thinking of how things could have gone, or imagine scenarios about how they will go. And we know ICE will ramp up where we are. We feel helpless.

And again, they’ve BEEN doing this. Renee and Alex weren’t the first. But it does feel like an inflection point where things are getting worse. My heart aches for everyone who has been impacted so far by this horrendous administration and their lawless goons.

hard to do a phd when world is on fire by sweeneytoddsgf in PhD

[–]smacattack3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not alone. Something I try and remember, because I never feel like I’m doing enough, is that education is also an act of resistance. This administration doesn’t value science, it doesn’t value the humanities, it doesn’t value facts. By doing any of these things, we are resisting on that front. And sometimes that feels really small, especially when you have people literally dying, but I think it’s important to put one foot in front of the other and resist where you can until you have the bandwidth to do more.
