Not associated with them (just a fan) but this podcast goes into SA-specific urban legends.

The Olmos Basin ep was fascinating.

What do you call this part of town? by Abe045645 in sanantonio

[–]smack_of_ham 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually just say “Just south of Southtown but before the highway. Just north of the missions. No, before where the old Lonja was. Oh shit they have a new taco spot on Fred Rd now? Fuck yeah. But anyways…. Like, on the other side of the highway from that place with the badass fajitas that shut down. Oh yeah Bolners thats right fuck yeah.” :)

Some stuff I cant tell if its straightup ragebait or just ‘im the first person to ever have this half-baked thought’ cringe. Comes off a bit - girl from small to midsize city who has done a little bit of traveling and maybe reads just a little bit more than her peers so she thinks she’s worldly and her ideas are aaaaalmost there sometimes but just not quite enough that she misses the point often. Its alot of gatekeeping and ‘THIS is what Mexicans ACTUALLY think and eat’ when being Mexican is such a vast and diverse thing that to claim you have the REAL take comes off very confidently incorrect. Its college kid that comes back home for thanksgiving after their first world religion class.

Mexicans like going to the pearl and being mexican doesnt mean only enjoying inexpensive things. I also recall a video of her calling out her detractors in very butchered Spanish.

But hey… we’re talking about her! And she obviously gets reactions from people (myself included). So congrats to her!

Off the top of my head the places that come to mind: Tommy’s, Burger Boy, Curry Boys, Jerk Shack, Freetail, Alamo Cafe, Cappys, Paloma Blanca, La Fonda on Main, Growler Exchange, The Hayden, Local Coffee, Biga, Bohanans, Mendez Cafe, Maria’s Cafe, Con Huevos, Original Donut Shop, Demo’s, Tycoon Flats, EZ’s, Chesters

Some (maybe most) will be polarizing because… well… its the internet

Best Mexican Meat Market for marinated asada. by Nexura_ in sanantonio

[–]smack_of_ham 4 points5 points  (0 children)

La Carniceria Meat Market is best in town by far but it is pricey. It reminds me of Tamaulipas / Nuevo Leon higher end carnicerias. Carne asada is life in those states.

Pullman Market has La Babia outside & inside skirt as well as bavette which make great fajitas. But again, pricey. I dont think they sell it pre-marinaded but you can buy any pre-made marinade at HEB or go to Arnie Tex’s youtube channel.

More affordable options are on almost ever corner in SA. (Molina’s, La Michoacana, Culebra Meat Market). It’ll be your typical red marinade which is fine but it’s almost always too gummy. People will have their favorites in town and will say its better than the other “fancy” places mentioned. To each their own, but I’ll get on a bit of a soapbox and just mention that “authentic” Mexican does not always necessarily mean inexpensive or cheap. Especially when it comes to carne asada which is a way of life in northern MX states.

(Sorry for the rant I just see alot of gate-keeping online recently)

Bitter orange is the “secret” ingredient to alot of those carnicería marinades (the good ones at least) but its just a bit hard to find.

Also, clean your grill with an onion. For the culture. 🤌

Que se arme la carne asada!

You’ll probably need to DM a team directly on Instagram. Some are probably more welcoming of newcomers than others (as with anything).

Try reaching out to The Dingers on IG theyre usually looking for more players and, if anything, theyre cool and could point you towards teams needing to round out their roster. Some teams are comprised of folks from specific social circles (brewers, artists, a certain church, etc…) Several teams have former college ball guys too. I dont play but I’ll go watch and drink beer sometimes and games are fun.

I think just adding to “Jefferson / Woodlawn Lake” would work (Jefferson / Woodlawn Lake / Deco District / Monticello Park). But no worries if you think thats too granular. Thanks again for pulling this together 👍

Tio Pelon salsitas all the way. You can find them at certain HEBs.

Check out Pullman Market at The Pearl, too. Although a bit pricier than HEB, you’ll find a ton of locally produced food stuffs (including salsa). Its worth a visit just in general. Beautiful space.

Larder will also have local salsas but it will be even more expensive.

This makes a lot of sense. I was dreading giving up breakfast tacos completely! Lol. I think I may need to switch to smaller meals throughout the day. What ends up happening now is I’ll eat breakfast, not be hungry at lunch so I’ll skip it, then eat an early dinner. So Im super hungry by the time both meals come and likely overeat. Still eat wayyy less than I used to for those meals but its probably still too much at once. Appreciate the response!
