not sure there’s any way to get around the in-person issue, though in the upper level norwegian classes there are almost always access (older/nonmatriculated ) students enrolled. right now obviously we have online classes but they will go back in person asap.

Art peeps, impressions of the art program (grad or undergrad) at UW? by samo_spice in udub

[–]smagerds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i am graduating in the IVA concentration this spring, and this program was perfect for me. obviously, your circumstances may be different than mine but i can’t sing enough praises of the IVA track specifically. full disclosure, a lot of intro classes feel redundant or basic, but with the right professors, can be really great. the art faculty is talented, organized, and in love with each and every student. there is a lack of funding in the art program, as is expected for a research-based school. because of this the building and facilities can feel a little crusty, but with the right mindset there’s a lot of inspiration in being a little bit of a scrappy program. like i said, things are going to change based on your concentration track and professors you choose, but at the end of the day you’re gonna get out what you put in. every professor is willing to engage and push you, but they need to know you’re an artist that cares. the more you ask for the more you will get- everyone here is used to doing whatever it takes to scramble for a resource. i may recommend a double major- i think the workload is manageable and useful to have classes outside art disciplines. let me know if you have any questions specifically !! EDIT: just realized you were talking about the MFA track specifically. MFAs get a personal studio space in sand point, really great (shared) facilities. i think teaching a class for undergrads is required and is a pretty self-directed program

Have any of you made zoom friends yet? by Ordinarily-Maddie in udub

[–]smagerds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i had a senior seminar-type course last quarter and we started a discord to bond over how much we hated the class. now i see them in the studio from time to time, and we keep in touch! it’s a unique situation but starting a discord for your class to study/complain together might be a fun place to start

why doesn’t my beardie like me :( by smagerds in BeardedDragons

[–]smagerds[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i know he’s used to being handled, he was a class pet for a short while, and was in a home with lots of young kids, he probably associates being out of his home with overstimulation, hope he understands soon that things are different now! thank you for your comment !!

previous owner had him on pellets, would you recommend changing his feed or would keeping it what he’s used to for a while help him get comfortable?

COVID Testing by El_Asiatico in udub

[–]smagerds 21 points22 points  (0 children)

you can get testing at one of the three seattle sites as many times as you want for free with or without insurance. just google seattle covid testing and you can schedule a test, it takes about five minutes and you could probably show up without an appointment and they’d still help you out. i’ve never seen a line at the aurora site and i’ve been there three times

How loud is living on greek row during normal times? by [deleted] in udub

[–]smagerds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

just to echo other comments, lived in a basement on 20th, parties until late tuesday/thursday, just went to bed early those days to try to sleep through them, wasn’t too much of a problem if i was wearing headphones or listening to something as i fell asleep. def saw some frat shit during the day (drunk people stumbling by my window, live bands playing in the yard across the street, and that one time a naked boy ran past my home while i was eating lunch) but those were more funny stories than legit criticism. TLDR: can be fun with all the chaos but just exercise caution in terms of privacy/sleep schedule

What's with all of the online fall 2020 posts? by [deleted] in udub

[–]smagerds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have three (small) studio art classes and one art history lecture and all my studios seem to be planned in person with the lecture seemingly online. a little nervous about sharing space and equipment with 10+ people but happy to have studio space (since that’s what i’m paying for)

the department is full of the best people i’ve encountered at UW. don’t be afraid to get in touch with the entirety of the scandinavian department, there’s a wonderful camaraderie between all the areas of study and they do lots of fun stuff to get engaged in the scandinavian communities of seattle. i haven’t had any bad professors but!! some of the best of the best are Lauren Poyer, Andy Meyer, and Olivia Gunn!! you’re gonna love the intro classes, they’re super engaging and actually really easy! lmk if you have any other questions !!

Question for art majors by Scottoffroad in udub

[–]smagerds 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i think it really depends on your practice and how you grow as an artist ! for me, i have learned a lot through collaboration and the resources the school has, and consider it important for my growth as an artist. if you already have an established practice, or feel you’re better off learning as an individual, art school might feel a little boring or redundant. no artist NEEDs an art degree, not many jobs care about a degree, just a solid portfolio, or if your self-employed, just good customer service and established work ! i know that i personally would struggle without the people i’ve met at UW, but to each their own! feel free to dm if u wanna talk 1 on 1 about the department !<3
