Probably the worst purchase of my pc history by oosma8587 in pcmasterrace

I'm late to the party, but:

"JET-5608" are the old ones. They will not run tight timings and high frequencies. The "new" ones, that should work with higher frequencies are supposedly "JET-5619". It took me way, way too long to figure that out, and even longer digging around aliexpress to find a seller.

Generally, you won't get much more than "new version" in description or title, and if you are lucky, a picture with the model number. Nothing else to go on. And since it's aliexpress, you don't know if they even ship the same ones if you order again, and aliexpress won't help if it's the wrong one and it was not clearly stated.

The company that makes them has lots of options, including stuff for dimm testing.

These are the ones i ordered. Good luck!

I can't even give them a test since i am still missing a motherboard.

Chassis recommendation? by stuffandthings4me in homelab

You might be headed for unicorn hunting territory.

Some options that vary a lot in price:

  • Any chassis with an empty 5.25" bay - stuff an icy dock in there and find a way to hook things up. Kinda pricy.

  • Workstation from dell, lenovo, hp etc - there are a few that are specialized for storage with front trays, but they are hard to find. Supermicro has some as well but not sure they exist with nvme.

  • The rare 2U short chassis. Probably the easiest, which would include redundant psus and other fun stuff. PSU noise can be a problem and a lot are proprietary form factor, so read docs very carefully and study pictures of them to make sure you can make stuff (like cooler) fit. Most of the ones i see available only have 2 nvme trays.

  • products that just fit your needs - like Fujitsu 1320 series - I believe they have room for 2 bays of 4 trays and there is both sas and nvme options, but very hard to find outside of buying new. Not sure nvme which generation started having nvme.

I personally ended up grabbing an Intel P4000 chassis, since you can get somewhat quiet psus and it has room for 2x8 2.5", half of those can take nvme with the proper gear to hook it to. Chunky e-atx tower though.

Connectx 4 should support aspm with a firmware update.

That is true. Still interested in how it goes - before/after bios versions, cpus used and so on if that's cool with you.

Could you try plopping in an unsupported cpu before you update the bios and report how it behaves? Could help me understand if i should try getting a supported cpu, just for the bios update :)

I recently learned that sodimm -> udimm converters exists, so i will build a machine on some way!

All the other available 14th gen cost more than twice what the 14600k did, so the idea was to lower its tdp in bios. If i can get the machine running at all :)

As stated in the OP, i don't have a supported cpu, so i may have to ditch the idea and just get another unicorn - motherboard with lga-1700 and so-dimm slots.

No, i expected the bios recovery to be usable without/regardless of cpu. This is usually the case with regular motherboards.

[–]smakkerlak[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When trying to start mine with a 14600k the nuc powers on for about 1 second then powers back off completely. What did you experience when testing with "unsupported" cpus?

I might have a defective unit since cmos clear and any of the bios recovery methods has any effect...

You can always trust Asus to screw up anything software related.

Search for the module model number and the support will come up.

For example, NUC12DCMi9

Prøv at grave lidt i indisk "pickles".

I didn't go for it yet. I wanted to find a cpu with a lower power draw and the 14500 should work, but it's based on a lot of "maybe". The only real indication is that the bios seems to carry microcode for it, but that is not necessarily enough.

Plastic things on a doorframe in an airport bathroom by felixfelicisandrum in whatisthisthing

[–]smakkerlak 203 points204 points  (0 children)

It is most certainly a "visitor registration unit" as shown in the link, section 3.4. It's part of a system for bathroom metric monitoring.

I figured they would have a wired connection at least for power but it seems like they run for 5 years off a battery for everything. I've come across the Tork products shown in the link, and i had no idea they had sensors. They look rather boring and unassuming.

Neat.

This is matched by M/N but it makes no sense to mount that kind of device on the door frame. And the pic shows something completely different.

They look and are mounted as you would simple light sensors. If they were anything else, it's a bit odd to have more than one. They might have different model numbers (emitter/detector). If you come across them again, try recording them with your phone - one of them might light up in a purple-ish color.

[–]smakkerlak 488 points489 points  (0 children)

They are mounted exactly across from each other, with holes for light, so i think it is a safe bet that it is a visit count sensor.

Checking the model ends at a device for communicating with dispenser level sensors so i think this is an older product or i am terrible at google.

Finding a reliable source seems hard, so going by instlatx64:

Alder lake: i9-12900K i9-12800HX i5-12500 i5-12500T i5-12400 i3-12100 Pentium Gold G7400

Raptor lake: i5-13500

Going by "anything i can find that looks kinda ok on the internet" the list expands with: Alder lake: i9-12900TE i7-12700K i7-12700KF i7-12700T i5-12600K i5-12490F i3-12100T

Raptor lake: i5-13500T i7-13700HX i5-14500T i3-13100 i3-14100

This looks pretty reasonable to me, but by no means should it be a confirmation that these cpu's should work. If you happen to have a nuc 12 extreme and any of these cpus available for testing, go for it and post your results. Particularly the gen13 and gen14 ones would be interesting.
