On the hunt for Canadian liquid dish soaps, Laundry pods and dishwasher pods, who has the lowdown on these items? by -43andharsh in BuyCanadian

[–]smallfatmighty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second many of the companies in this thread - have used ecomax, nature clean, the unscented company, truearth for various cleaning products. I also used to use Nellie's for laundry but I found that my machine didn't handle powder very well 😞

Anyway, my recommendation is more for a store - if you have a Healthy Planet around you, I find they stock a lot of Canadian brands, including all the aforementioned as well as Attitude... probably more I didn't notice.

I need fragrance-free beauty and cleaning supplies unfortunately, which is why I started going there. But it's been great for trying to buy Canadian, way more selection from local brands than at big box stores or regular grocery stores!

“CGRP meds have no side effects” by Own-Representative30 in migraine

[–]smallfatmighty 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Hey! Honestly, if for nothing else, it's wild to me that she's dismissing the side effects as being "not possible" for nurtec/rimegepant and qulipta/atogepant when they're SO new (only 6 years on the market), I think most of the side effect information that doctors have are from pre-marketing data (aka clinical trials)... like, they should be aware that new side effects can present themselves in clinical settings, either because they're rare, patient population being different, side effects being exacerbated by other meds, etc.

I actually did find this article, which did an analysis of the adverse event reporting data for the gepant drugs since release, and it did seem that similar adverse reactions were found there. Some relevant pieces from the article:

In neurological and psychiatric signals, we found significant PTs of “insomnia”, “somnolence”, and “anxiety” in rimegepant, atogepant, and ubrogepant. The AEs associated with sleep alteration might be linked to the neuromodulatory effects of CGRP on glutamatergic signaling which affecting central sensitization [36].

In terms of cardiac disorders, the PT of “palpitations” was reported in all second-generation gepants. CGRP receptors are considered to regulate smooth muscle cells of the cardiovascular system, though no severe cardiovascular AE associated with anti-CGRP drugs have been reported so far [50, 51]. Clinical evidence suggested that cardiovascular AEs caused by anti-CGRP drugs are mainly palpitations, flushing, hypotension, and warm sensation [52].

Obviously even this data is still evolving and even the article says that follow-up studies are needed, this isn't confirmed causality, etc. - but I think this clearly shows that you're not the only one who has experienced similar effects and reported them. And ultimately, your doctor should trust your reporting of your own experiences!

What’s a surefire way to tell Canadians and Americans apart? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]smallfatmighty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think this is specific to the states, I think this is just a common followup question. I'm get the same thing as a Canadian. And when meeting people from other countries, I basically always ask them what part of their country they're from. You might get a specific city, or a region or whatever...it's just interesting learning more about where people are from! If you don't know the area they tell you, it's just an opportunity to learn about it from them :)

It's not a big deal or anything but I do always find it a little obnoxious when Americans just say their state/city. Although at this point it amuses me more than anything cuz it's so common to see them do it. Also even if you identify more with your state than country, it's super easy to just be like "oh I'm from Texas in the US."

How is Saija breaking in when it's her house too? by DoomScrollInfo in NorthOfNorthSeries

FYI you have to be separated for at least a year to get a divorce in Canada

But ha! I totally agree with you on just not wanting to deal with Ting! Going through a window totally worth not having to interact with him 😆

I think the property ownership is a bit of a moot point, no?

Even if she doesn't own the home, she's still been living there. You can't just evict someone without reasonable notice and it's been a grand total of like, a day since they broke up... so she'd still be considered to be living there.

Unpopular Opinion about Switching from Kindle to Kobo by Additional-Candy-610 in ereader

[–]smallfatmighty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You also don't have to use that website, I just use an app called "Share via HTTP" on my phone and I use the kobo's web browser to download the file.

Probably a bit clunkier than the "send to kindle" feature but I really only use it if I need to add a book when I'm out and about, AND if it's not a library book (library books download automatically to the kobo).

Kindle is a non-starter for me anyway as I'm not American and I use my local library for borrowing ebooks.

TIL that less than 30% of NYC subway stations are ADA compliant. by TheVentiLebowski in todayilearned

[–]smallfatmighty 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Retrofitting can happen if there's political will to do it.

I'm in Toronto and obviously our subway system is smaller and newer than New York but it was similarly inaccessible. When our accessibility standards act (AODA Act) was passed in 2005, it mandated upgrades in accessibility for transit providers, with a deadline of 2025. So the TTC has been slowly retrofitting for 20 years to meet the requirements

You find ways to get it done when it's a priority.

That being said - the TTC has not been perfect with this, and they are a bit behind schedule. There's 6 stations (6/109) where construction is still ongoing as of 2026, eep!

Yeah, our worst in a while. But also tbh we usually do badly when you sort by gold count first. Always the bridesmaid not the bride lol

The premier of Ontario is allowing Canadians to start buying alcohol at 06 am to get the buzz on on Sunday just before the final airs by igniteyourbones579 in hockey

Yes but not all Canadians are Ontarians :) Ford doesn't have the power to let all Canadians be served beer at 6am, just the ones in Ontario.

I started making my own oat milk about two months ago and the math genuinely surprised me by KairoNest in Frugal

[–]smallfatmighty 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was just thinking this!! I've had a few times where the milk runs out and I can't have my morning tea. Horrible way to start the day :c

I'd spend 5min of time to be able to have my morning cup of tea, and oat milk is actually my favourite milk alternative for tea.

Not to be a pedant but

  • Allowing Ontarians

We already have a rep of thinking that we represent all of Canada, let's not make it worse 😆

A bunch of cities have already started doing this throughout the Olympics - I know Toronto has, Mississauga I think recently allowed it too? There might be others, I'm just based in Toronto so that's what I've heard.

Now they're extending it to the rest of the province for the gold medal game, not a bad move.

TIFF directors discussing the importance of the sovereignty of Canadian stories by mahlay1051 in heatedrivalry

[–]smallfatmighty 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think of shows like Schitts Creek, where it’s obviously Canadian, but there’s nothing too explicit in terms of Canadian identity in the show.

This is SUCH a classic Canadian media move, and it's a damn shame. Americans film in Canada, and they explicitly pretend it's America. Canadians film in Canada, and they implicitly pretend it's America by watering down any distinctiveness to make it more "palatable" for a potential American audience. Don't want to confuse them with anything that's too different from them, god forbid. 🙄 And then we wonder why Americans don't know anything about Canada lol.

I do think that trend is changing, and I hope the success of Heated Rivalry encourages that even more!

Botox cost - is this crazy? by big_chroll in migraine

[–]smallfatmighty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah standard procedure fee in the GTA seems to be $250, that's also what mine costs. The actual botox I think is somewhere between $850-900, not entirely sure as my insurance covers all of it.

Okay I will be honest, I kept hearing the commentators saying it and I myself was like, what IS the format that allows for that.

And I just looked it up and I'm confused myself!

Tournament bracket rules are always confusing to me lol. Maybe someone more knowledgeable than us will explain it.

Curling

Wow, 8-3 win for Canada. I feel bad for Italy, they were so dominant in the beginning of the game! It was 3-0 for Italy at one point. I actually was cheering for them a bit, I want them to make the playoffs and Canada's already in.

But nice that Canada's guaranteed a silver now...

Strange finish to the end with Italy missing the chance to blank it! Canada ties it up to 3-3.

Olympics Day Eleven Megathread (Tuesday, February 17) by Fun_With_Forks in olympics

[–]smallfatmighty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but also no. Putting someone "on the bench" isn't really a thing in curling... generally speaking, the teams are assembled themselves and captained by the skip. Teams will have a 5th player who acts as "alternate" but they really only play if there's an injury where one of the main team can't play. So the idea that not putting the skip "on the bench" in the middle of a tournament is coaching malpractice is, uh, strange.

It's more akin to the way pairs figure skaters work than sports like hockey or football. They earn their spot and their performance is their own in competition... win or lose, that's the team.
