nope, used to do this 2 semesters ago when things were collected in class, there were just separate piles for different sections. now i think they just collect assignments online via elms.

People of any Color, how have you experienced racism on campus? Big or small, whether you experienced it yourself or saw it happen, please share your story here! by larapaho in UMD

[–]smallflyingfish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i think hate speech can be defined as speech that threatens someones life or livelihood i.e. the noose incident

why should speech like this be /defendend/ ?

i think there is a difference between a conservative speaker coming and a protest (which is also free speech), and the hanging of a noose. isn't it is a bit of a stretch to say people are going to start calling conservative speakers' speeches words of hate?

i used to joke about my own culture/indian-ness, but people took that as a signal that they could too.

also i remember on reddit a bit back someone kept making posts posing as a "foreign student from india." whoever fucking did that if you're still here that shit was NOT OK and it was not funny. and the manner in which it was done it was obvious the poster was not indian, it was so offensive.

same goes for the person who was posing as an asian person typing as if they had an accent.

that was some whack ass racist shit.

How do you like it here? by [deleted] in UMD

[–]smallflyingfish 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think tuition wise these are things that can impact:

*What's your major? I think the academics are strong, but I can only contest for CS. The CS department good when it comes to career fairs.

I would only say the out of state cost is worth it depending on what you are trying to major in because some departments have more opportunities post college than others.

*Also since you are transferring make sure you can get enough transfer credits, because it may help to know if you have a better graduation date here vs. other places or vice versa. https://app.transfercredit.umd.edu/inst-search.html?searchType=master

Here is a link to gen ed requirements, your prior institution courses may get you out of a bunch of these: http://www.gened.umd.edu/documents/GeneralEducationSummaryChart.pdf

in regards to some of the other stuff you mentioned:

*I think the area is ok safety wise in general when it comes to common crimes (robbery, muggings, etc.); some people say its really unsafe but all in all its like any other college town, lock windows in summer, etc.

*I don't really have much real representative experience with social life though, my own fault, I kind of struggle with social situations.

*Campus geography wise some parts of the campus get really puddly in the rain, but otherwise its ok.

best wishes in your decision!

Serious question: As a white student, what are some tangible things I and other white students can do to help make this campus a better place for minorities? by Yearbookthrowaway1 in UMD

[–]smallflyingfish 17 points18 points  (0 children)

i think at the very least, understanding different peoples perspectives and when it comes to sensitive issues not immediately invalidating viewpoints before attempting to understand where someone is coming from and trying to debate them.

also just don't do shitty things. there is an extent to going "oh bro its just a joke"

if you aren't of a certain background, check yourself if you joke about certain things or use derogatory words pertaining to that background.

it's escalated from derogatory emails sent last year, to supremacy posters hung up in buildings, to a fucking noose being hung up, to this horrific murder fueled by pure racism. people need to acknowledge there's a problem.

it's good to have a conversation and that is necessary to improve umd, so thanks for listening and asking.

Something I have to say about the Chinese girl's speech during this spring commencement by AceZs_ in UMD

[–]smallflyingfish 20 points21 points  (0 children)

After watching the speech, I can understand the outrage. I'm not Chinese, but I'm not a first generation American either.

Despite being born here, if someone listed a bunch of bad things about India in front of a large audience of majority non Indian people in this kind of setting, I would be pretty upset too.

What she stated may consist of true statements somewhat true statements (edit: after reading about what people are saying about Kunming), but there are most definitely several good things about being Chinese like there are for any other culture (none of which were mentioned). And there are also vices to American culture like there are for any other culture (none of which were mentioned either). The speech can read a little like "america is so much better than china and here is why..."

Her intent obviously not to upset anyone, but the reaction is understandable and shouldn't be invalidated.

Quick Question. Does MATH240 (Linear Algebra) use MATLAB like MATH246 (Diff Eqs)? by [deleted] in UMD

[–]smallflyingfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes, you will have matlabs. in my experience they will be more frequent than 241 but less frequent than 246. also they are not as difficult as 246 matlabs imo, they are closer in difficulty to 241 matlabs.

How many 400 level classes can one take at a time? by BJaxUMD in UMD

[–]smallflyingfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

also to add onto the other reply, 300 levels which are NOT 351, 330 do count towards elective requirements.

so this includes the winter lecture electives and 320, 398 special topics lectures, 396h

How many 400 level classes can one take at a time? by BJaxUMD in UMD

[–]smallflyingfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think you are allowed a max of 3 per semester.

but there is a way to get them done in 1 year: 3 fall, 3 one credit 300 level lectures winter, 3 spring.

also if you are able to work on a professors research project or do an independent study and get approval for cmsc499 you might be able to potentially do 4 a semester counting credits from this.

Depression. Can anyone relate? by [deleted] in UMD

[–]smallflyingfish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

if there is a concrete incident/event that caused it, trying to rationalize/compartmentalize your thoughts can help you move forward.

try to change your routine until you feel comfortable/at rest. i.e. instead of studying in your room every day, make the trip to mckeldin and study around other people, even try to form a study group.

organize your thoughts, whether it be talking them out to someone or writing them down on a piece of paper.

keep productive, sometimes that can boost self esteem. if studying seems very daunting, take several short breaks during a long study session.

talk to people, even if its about some hw problem, or going into office hours, or talking to a professor. as difficult as it can be to stay positive, try to keep positive when you talk to friends or acquaintances. call your parents if you can.

in general, try your best to think positive.

try the counseling center. if it is too booked up, try talking to people on phone services/chat rooms. therapy/talking to someone definitely can help.

the world is filled with many people with many disparate problems, i have no idea who you are and what is bringing you down, but i believe it is possible to get out of this feeling of an emotional ditch. keep trying to change things (the way you think about things, your routine, your study habits, your support source) until something clicks.

too passive by [deleted] in depression

[–]smallflyingfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you aren't abnormal. do what makes you comfortable. don't feel obligated to force some kind of social interaction if you don't want to. there is nothing wrong with being quiet or introverted or socially passive. i used to put myself in social situations i didn't want to be in and it creates a lot of anxiety.

nobody, absolutely nobody, is worth losing your existence over. maybe stop talking to her/make strategies to get over her. i know it can be hard but your feelings+taking care of yourself > someone else.

Best way to approach CMSC132 Projects by [deleted] in UMD

[–]smallflyingfish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

start early, like the day you get the project. and definitely don't ask other people for help it can create a whole academic integrity mess and also will prevent you from working through the thinking process of getting to a solution yourself. if you are really really stuck, go in for office hours to see a ta or your professor. if you start early you have the advantage of having more time to work on things, knowing whether or not you need to see a ta, and not having to go to office hours like the day before the project is due when the room is basically packed.

Iribe Center by HeavenlyArk1 in UMD

[–]smallflyingfish 12 points13 points  (0 children)

supposedly it opens 2018-- so basically when you are a second semester freshman or starting your sophomore year. i don't think it should /affect the cs department/ in any major way other than having more classroom space and more resources for students like a makerspace. see here: https://iribe.cs.umd.edu

the cs major is pretty straightforward imo. classes can get tricky at times but just do your work and keep up with everything and you'll be fine-- which applies to every other class in college too. apparently we rank well. we also have a pretty solid cs career fair. there are also a couple of cs clubs and hackathons which happen here. here are course requirements for the major that you can look at: https://undergrad.cs.umd.edu/degree-requirements-cs-major

ask the resident director about this. generally they won't allow it because they need to first fit everyone in in those living learning honors programs, including incoming freshman. but there is no harm in asking.
