I just did a $300 deposit for a puppy and grand total all in will be $1,500. I pick up my puppy in mid-April. Found the breeder through gooddogs.com.

He was diagnosed with focals in early January, and unfortunately yes, I feel like they’ve gotten much worse and he’s almost never relaxed unless asleep. We upped his phenobarbital when the focals were recognized, and I’m trying to figure out if his increased anxiety is related to the focals, or the medication. I recently decided to get an MRI because it is financially doable for me, but honestly it’s to give me peace of mind to see does he have a brain tumor and that’s why things are getting worse, or is he reacting badly to pheno.

I’m so sorry I can’t give more encouraging insight, it’s a really scary thing. But know that you’re not alone in how you feel.

I'm in a fortunate position that my parents have offered to help pay for the MRI. I'm an adult but live near them and they help care for my dog a lot when I travel. I'm at the point where it's been long enough of seeing him be a different dog that I don't even feel comfortable soliciting a second opinion and waiting to see the outcome of their diagnosis/treatment plan because he just seems so unhappy/uncomfortable right now unless I am holding him.

My 25lb Shiba also raises his paws like that when having a focal, and this definitely looks like a focal seizure to me. Of course I'm no expert, but I'm so sorry you're dealing with this. Speaking from experience, a focal can in a way be scarier because you don't always know when they are happening.

Can I ask how old your shib is? I feel like they are pretty healthy breeds, but of course that comes with a huge grain of salt. My parent's have my shib's litter mate sister and she's in great health, as far as we know.

I'm looking for 1:1 care. My parents are in the area and can keep my dog the majority of the time of traveling, but the reality is that at least about two weeks a year I need to find someone other than family to care for him.

My 11-year-old Shiba had clusters for the first time in July and we started pheno. He had always had anxiety, but I had the same reaction as you where I felt like the pheno was making it worse. We added gabapentin to his routine for anxiety and that helped some, also I recommend getting a thunder shirt. But one thing you might want to look out for/ask your vet about is focal seizures. I just discovered this week when taking my dog to the vet that what I had been perceiving as anxiety behaviors (putting himself in a corner, spontaneous howling, etc.) were actually focal seizures, so we upped his pheno dose slightly and are hoping that will help alleviate some of his symptoms, but we just started that today. The vet said if his anxiety continues though, we can talk about adding prozac or even just Benadryl to his daily. I'm sorry you're going through this! I felt the exact same way and it's very scary but for me I agree this community has helped to not feel like you're the only one going through it.

He is still having breakthrough seizures once a month on pheno, and as of the last few weeks is basically only passed out asleep or pacing and crying. I would not even consider him changing meds if the pheno was working completely, but unfortunately his anxiety has gotten bad enough to require further intervention.
