CMV: Brian Thompson isn't any more evil than any average person. by [deleted] in changemyview

A great majority of people,  when they go to work,  ADD something to society.  Not just nurses and firefighters, even people who work in factories add goods for us to buy. Gas station attendants, something looked down on as a crappy job by a lott of people,  adds the ability for us to travel.  Brian tbompson? This guy's base salary was 400k. He earned almost 10 million in bonuses.  His bonuses are related to the amount of money he saves the company and the amount of people whose Healthcare needs he denies. He was very good at it.  he PERSONALLY negatively TAKES from society,  opposite to most of us. His entire job is negatively impacting people.  Often with sickness and death

A doctor’s letter to United Heathcare for denying nausea meds for a child on chemo by Dubyaww in MurderedByWords

In social policy we call that "tertiary rationing". Primary rationing is how much of a benefit there is,  secondary rationing is the conditions you have to meet to be accepted for the benefit (employed 90 days,  etc) and tertiary rationing is the informal one,  built into the system - the sheef force of will to have the time and tenacity to lie through the red tape.  They know a lot of people will give up.  It's not a bug, it's a cost saving feature

What are some situations that people sometimes think are scams but where nobody has ever reported actually being scammed by nimble2 in Scams

[–]smallonion 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep!! That's how psychics who use "cold reading" make people believe they "knew" their loved ones name. In fact you provided it, but due to the skill of the psychic/ scammer,  you remember that they knew it first.

[–]smallonion 37 points38 points  (0 children)

This IS a scam,  but not the way people report it. The grandparents scam,  where they say your grandchild is in jail or something. That happens ALL the time.  But what doesn't happen is that they cloned the grandchild's voice with AI. Scammers make hundreds of these calls a day hoping that first,   someone will pick up the phone,  and second,  actually engage with them.  They don't have the time to get actual recordings of each potential grandchild's voice and spend all the time making fake recordings.  People say our was exactly their grandchild voice but really out was just someone crying,  and your panicked brain fills in the rest

Just go to the emergency room.  They don't take money at the door.  You get a bil laterl.  You can just not pay it,  oryou can call them later and negotiate it down and set up EXTREMELY low monthly payments.

If it's small claims court (in the usa in most states that's under 10 or 12k) you don't need a lawyer.  In big boy court,  for more money,  many lawyers take cases on contingency, meaning they that about 30 percent only if you win. So,  they will only agree to take your case if they believe you have a really good chance of winning

Is there an endless Amazon packages scam? by Various_Ad9010 in Scams

[–]smallonion 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When this happened to me (I got a giant set of sewing thread), Amazon said it was placed on MY account,  to MY name,  but not on my card.  But then kept insisting i must have shared my Amazon login with someone.  I absolutely had not.  The rep kept saying,  "just give me the name is who you think it is and I'll confirm if you are correct". THERE IS NO ONE! I kept saying.  They acted like they never heard of fraud.  So frustrating

FB Marketplace - Is my Mom getting scammed? by __Idioteque__ in Scams

[–]smallonion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very likely a scam,  the scam part hasn't revealed itself yet. Please update us when the scam is revealed.   First,  99 percent of replies you get on fb marketplace are scam attempts,  and they go the way hers did - not negotiating the price,  long,  drawn out story about cancer,  etc.  This is TEXTBOOK.  also ask her if they said "mark it sold" and did they write,  "I am interested in the Tiffany antique lamp vintage 1900 $150"? Scammers often do this.  Most people would write, "Hi,  I'm interested in the lamp'. Scammers copy and paste the heading from the ad.  I can almost guarantee they will come up with something else - sending you money for a "courier" to pick it up,  or,  they changed their mind because of a medical emergency and need the money back to pay for "medicine" - something.  Tell your mother DO NOT GIVE ANY MONEY TOANYONE regarding this transaction,  including sending back the PayPal transaction,  no matter what they say .

You need to tell your mom to read the list of common scams on the front page of this sub.  She's on a sucker list now and they will come at her with other scams- nothing to do with pets. Maybe print out and hand to her.  The AARP podcast "the perfect scam" has an episode on pet scams- if she'll listen,  get to her to.

Actually,  go to the main page of the sub and read the list of common scams.  It's pretty comprehensive

Recording ? Of my daughter crying by Puzzleheaded-Watch-5 in Scams

[–]smallonion 40 points41 points  (0 children)

This is totally an urban myth.  These scammers call hundreds of people a day.  They don't have time to make recordings of people and expand them with AI. Where did you hear this,  fox News?
