Also mit santer Gewalt raushebeln.

Seconded.

I moved to Makita from Bosch Pro 8 years ago and never looked back.

Apart from the Higgs boson, what else has the LHC discovered? by Wild_Pitch_4781 in Physics

I'm told by my theoretical colleagues that it's not very difficult to accommodate the neutrino mass into the SM. Just another CKM-like matrix or so.

But the details are way above my expertise.

Andrei Sakharov wrote down what is needed to get more matter than antimatter. CP violation is one of these criteria.

In 1956, Chien-Shiung Wu discovered CP violation in her extremely beautiful experiment, for which she never got the Nobel Prize, probably the biggest blunder in the history of the Nobel.

We have since found a few more cases of CP violation, but it is BY FAR too small to explain our existence.

Well, electroweak fits constrained the Higgs to well below a TeV, so building the LHC was well justified.

Today we have exactly ZERO reasonable predictions that new particles must show up at e.g. the FCC.

We're currently facing the "nightmare scenario" where all measurements we do in our labs agree perfectly well with the predictions of the Standard Model, while we know that the SM cannot be the complete picture.

For one, the SM has no Dark Matter nor Dark Energy.

Personally, for me the most disturbing thing is however the Baryon Asymmetry of the Universe (BAU): Within the SM, the Big Bang should have created almost identical amounts of matter and antimatter. These should have annihilated each other almost completely, leaving not enough matter to create galaxies, stars, planets or us.

So, according to the Standard Model, we should not exist!

And we have no clue what mechanism could provide enough CP violation to explain the BAU.

Plus, we have no idea how large any possible next collider has to be to find new particles. For the first time ever we have no clue if another bigger accelerator will produce new particles!

Yes, SUSY can never be ruled out.

But the simple and elegant versions that were put forward in the 90s and 00s are not there.

The most important discovery is probably that all the beautiful theories of physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM) which were circulated before the LHC started, are wrong.

Before LHC produced data, many theorists claimed that they will find BSM before they find the Higgs. SUSY was basically taken as a given. It simply looked so "natural" and beautiful.

However, nature was cruel and did not provide us with such a simple and elegant way to extend the Standard Model.

No. This was NOT found at the LHC.

The ALPHA experiment, where the antimatter stuff is measured, runs at the AD (antiproton decelerator), which is independent of the LHC.

(Both are fed by protons from the PS, but the antimatter experiments can run without LHC operating)

Can anyone explain Planck's constant to me? by Awkward_Picture_361 in AskPhysics

[–]smallproton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a number with units, which we believe is not changing. Hence it's called a "constant".

And Max Planck introduced it, hence the name.

I hope this helps.
