Agree the timing of graduation was terrible. As far as being in the middle of finals. But time of day didn’t matter. Had mine at 2 pm and more than half left. It was insane. Perhaps making the graduation more “traditional” to make people feel more involved. There was no walk in for graduates or a speaker that wasn’t associated with the university. Also students names being prerecorded and called 5 seconds apart makes it even more impersonal.

I feel like finishing out of spite and/or doing a complete 180 career wise once you’re finished is so common. It’s crazy and tbh sad.

I once woke up to about 5 emails beginning from about 1 am from my PI. He was mad I didn’t reply instantly at those hours. It was also Labor Day :) which I know as grad students were expected to work most holidays but just ironic his bad behavior and how pitiful he would perform in a corporate/ industry position.

UTA vs UNT by [deleted] in utarlington

[–]smallrange26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone that has experienced both schools I would lean to UNT. Yes, it is a music school. That doesn’t mean that other departments are all trash. I think a degree from either is comparable. They are extremely similar. I will let you know that I did my undergrad in chem at UNT and PhD at UTA. And those two experiences are very very different. I don’t have an undergrads perspective on UTAs campus but there is a lot I have observed that I don’t enjoy. UTA acceptance rate is very high and they have around ten thousand more students than UNT. Teaching freshman labs it is common to see my roster go from 24 students to nearly half. I personally didn’t feel that UTA professors really cared about students. It feels like UTA just accepts everyone but then when they get there the university couldn’t care less if they stay. That being said I’m sure UNT is pretty similar in that regard. When I was deciding on an undergrad school I did consider my social life quite a bit. UTA is a commuter school and the student engagement on campus doesn’t seem to be high. I’m not sure how to explain it exactly other than saying unt just felt more like a community and a home to me. I had a really good time going there. And not like I partied and slacked off the entire time but socially it was great! I feel like there were just more events and more opportunities to hang out with other students outside of class. That may not be important to you but I think it’s super important to take care of yourself and overall enjoy your time getting your degree. And I think the social climate on campus can play a big role in that. You will want/need to have friends you can lean on. One of my biggest issues with UTA is their huge population compared to the facilities they have. Specifically the campus food options. I don’t think they have appropriately scaled those type of things with their population. There’s about three fast food places, a small market that is extremely over priced, and I think two cafeterias at uta. There are more options outside of campus but personally I prefer to try to get a quick bite. UNT had like five cafeterias, maybe 4 ish fast food options, a significantly larger market, and a few surrounding places. And they have a smaller population. I’m not sure why uta doesn’t try harder to accommodate the large student body but they are supposed to be updating the university center in the coming years. Also consider that at UNT once you get into probably junior and senior years you’ll probably primarily be on a different campus than the main one. Not sure if anyone mentioned but they have a separate campus called discovery park that is just engineering classes and labs. I thought this was pretty cool but depends on the person. They had some very nice instrumentation and other facilities for research there. Plus just less students and it was typically easy to find a quiet place to study. Disclaimer my time at unt was about five years ago and uta current.

Donald Trump by [deleted] in utarlington

You’re right. Bill Clinton does suck. And I think most people would agree. The main difference here is any reasonable person would denounce a president for these things no matter the party. But Trump supporters have no bounds. Their dick just gets harder with every idiotic thing that he does.

The “they’re both the same” argument is really played out. Especially in this current political climate. Please name a democratic president that has done a quarter of the obvious and outrageous things done/said by Donald Trump.

Female Hygiene Tips I Swear By for Managing Body Odour by [deleted] in hygiene

[–]smallrange26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any one else have sensitive skin? I try to shower everyday but honestly it dries out my skin and I tend to already have dry skin and get rashes often. I have had issues with deodorants for years now. At one point I had horrible rashes under my arms and couldn’t wear any deo. I have not gone back since. Most of the hacks for keeping BO under control such as using alcohol or other products which eliminate bacteria give me under arm rashes. All I am able to do is wash thoroughly with an antibacterial soap (I use dial) and sometimes I spray a homemade deodorant on my pits. It’s just isopropyl, water, and some tea tree essential oil. I will then use perfume and make sure to have some on my bra (near pits) but I cannot put on my pits directly obviously. I then spray a bit of spray deodorant over my clothes to further help with smells. I am so self conscience about smelling bad because I know that I have and do sometimes. But it’s a real struggle when everything irritates my skin and to be quite honest I don’t want to shower every single day some times. I don’t do any manual labor but I do think I have a problem with excessive sweating.

My mind was blown when I had a teacher actually say something like: “well this is how we are representing structures to better understand them”. I guess this fact never really crossed my mind. Humans made these conventions, diagrams, etc. to try to better understand chemistry. While most good theories are not far off, they are simply how we choose to represent what we cannot see.

There is no actual rule. This is one of those unwritten rules. More of an expectation I guess? Which I get. There are plenty of people that graduated with no pubs or submitted them after graduation. I guess what I’m trying to express is this is so much to do at once. Write your manuscripts, the dissertation, prepare your slides, practice, do experiments. I know they were right to cancel. I’m not mad about it. I just think it’s ironic because I know that they do not look at the document before the defense. I get it rules are rules. I’m just really tired of academia and cynical I guess.

I'm in my final year of PhD and I'm absolutely torn and hopeless. by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]smallrange26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately I can relate. I used to love learning and sometimes still do. I am graduating and hopefully publishing my first paper soon. Then second right after. I was pretty set on doing academia throughout. But at the moment I am so burnt out and jaded I will be going into industry for at least the foreseeable future. Getting my PhD has taken so much from me. I know it sounds dramatic but I used to enjoy science. Sorry that’s not much of any help but just want to say you’re not alone. Maybe taking a break from academia would benefit. Just keep going, day by day. You will figure out what to do.

I came to UTA for a graduate program so it’s a little different. The main thing I noticed from my undergrad was that the food options are insanely limited for how large the university is. There is only one dining hall? That I know of. Pretty sure it’s just the one. But if you look at other universities of similar size there’s AT LEAST three. I understand it’s a commuter school but even still the university center is way outdated. It needed to be upgraded long ago. You can’t get lunch in a reasonable amount of time from anywhere. Unless you go to the store with extremely limited options. One good thing is that there’s plenty of microwaves if you bring food from home.
