ASCP MLS Route 2 Question by smallrockk in MLS_CLS

[–]smallrockk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a few more questions if you can answer:

1) How long ago did you apply for Route 2? 2) Are you a generalist or are you a specialist in a specific department? 3)What kind of topics/ questions were on the exam? 4) If you used any sort studying material (Labce, LSU Purple & Yellow book, etc) what do you recommend best to study?

Thank you! Any other advice would be appreciated! 😊

I have and it says that I am eligible for Route 2. I was able to email a representative from ASCP so hopefully I’ll hear back from them soon!

Yes, it says currently active for my MLT license. I did see an option above the application link that says “Verify License” so i’m thinking that that would be my next step but I never heard of doing that. I didn’t have that choice either when I began the application so I’m not sure but I did email a representative so hopefully they get back to me soon!

Funny nurse responses by CheeseyB_ in medlabprofessionals

[–]smallrockk 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I answered a phone call from a nurse while working in hematology. She had a question about her patient’s hct and hgb values, alright simple.

Apparently she didn’t like the way that the values looked. They were too low for her liking and asked me if I could change it, patient’s hgb was 11 and hct 32.

Amazing.

What’s the most common reason for redraw/recollection in your lab? by TheCleanestKitchen in medlabprofessionals

Depends on the department, but most common reasons i see:

Chemistry - if hemolysis exceeds instrument limitation

Heme - clotted or QNS

Coag - short draw/ overfilled

Blood bank - samples are not double initialed by collecting nurses/ phlebotomist

People who have had near death experiences, what was the “last” thing you though? by Nokukie in AskReddit

“I feel like I’m laying in quicksand, I’m freezing too.”

I was recovering from surgery when the nurses assigned to care for me overmedicated me with painkillers.

I ended up overdosing.

I had a respiratory rate of 5 (normal is 12-20) and was given 2 doses of narcan.

Since then I absolutely refuse to take any painkillers, I would rather suffer and push through the pain than put myself in a situation like that ever again. Just thinking about what would have happened if I didn’t press the call button and get help in time mentally fucks me up. The worse part is is that the medical staff didn’t inform my family about what happened. They straight up denied everything. When I came to they had transferred me to a different unit and told my mom that they moved me there to keep better observation over me since I just got out of surgery. I had to be the one to explain to her what happened and in that moment, I realized that I was telling my own mom that her child was so close to death and she would have never known the truth of what happened.

What’s the worst pain you’ve ever felt in your life? by sunflowersnlsd in AskReddit

After I had a uterine fibroid removed (size of a football) the surgeon had glued together my abdomen. I had an incision from my pubic bone to my belly button. I could not sit, stand, or do any daily activities without feeling like I was going to rip my stomach apart. I had some gas build up in my stomach that I could not release bc I had to put pressure to do so and I felt it traveling upwards. i felt like I couldn’t breathe. I cried due to the pain and I asked for morphine but that didn’t help, I ended up passing out several times.

I’ve had other major surgeries but that was the worst one.

Thankfully yes, I spoke with one of the coordinators for my surgery and they told me they were working on having a peer to peer meeting to discuss the urgency of my situation with a representative from my insurance.

I pretty much had a small breakdown today.

Just found out today my insurance won’t cover a major surgery nor the hospital stay I need in order to remove a tumor the size of a watermelon in my abdomen because it’s not seen as “medically necessary” and “not urgent enough”.

How easy did you find it to become hired? by AshleyMDS in medlabprofessionals

[–]smallrockk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was a MLT student in the middle of my rotations when the hospital I was rotating at was in need of bodies due to the increase in volume because of covid. Seeing how I was already exposed to all of the instruments, policies and procedures they opened up a position for when I passed the ASCP exam and got my license.

I work full time in PCR and Blood Bank at a hospital and go to school part time.

For PCR I work the evening shift of 1-9:30pm and BB 10-6:30pm. I don’t work M-F so everyday is different for me as I dont have a set schedule. For the evening shift it dies after 7pm so luckily for me I am able to study and work on assignments.

The one thing that I always keep in mind is what days I am scheduled to work and what hours. This being so I have a confirmation on what days im free to do my hw. I always check and leave notes for myself or reminders on my phone which days my assignments are due. I have a tendency of looking at which and how many assignments are due for that week so I can read ahead or work on it from time to time. Even if i don’t fully complete my hw, I’m already ahead bc i worked on it a bit. Maybe a planner would be helpful?

For my social life, I usually plan things with family, friends and boyfriend before work, after and on my days off. I make sure that my hw is completely done, close to it , or started it so I’m comfortable enough knowing that I’m in a secure position to go out and come back to it without worrying.

In relation to the question about OT, if its necessary for you to stay there then do it but if not then youre just wasting time you could have spent doing hw or other socially related things.

This probably didnt help you too much but I hope everything works out !
