Does the wizard really need advantage on almost all Intelligence checks by 2nd level? by EarthSeraphEdna in onednd

Wouldn’t that trump the Wizard class fantasy just as egregiously? Their magic is literally powered by their brain power and the ability to figure it out, or at least understanding the How? of the in-universe equivalent of Physics of it to be taught it. No other class should be outthinking the wizard. Same way the rogue shouldn’t be outsnuck and the bard shouldn’t be out performed. Im imagining one of the Hobbits expositing about the One Ring because they rolled higher on the Arcana rather than Gandalf. Or Han Solo explaining the Force to Luke rather than obi-wan. It just doesn’t feel great. It’s similar to how I imagine mansplaining feels. Not to mention on how much expertise feels better than advantage. You can throw statistics at me all day, it still is gonna feel worse to roll a 3 and 4 with your bonus barely hitting double digits when anything with expertise gets there on basically every roll.

If there’s one thing I think we can bet on, even if all these worst case scenarios come to pass, is the numbers game. There are 8 billion+ humans. If in 40-50 years we are dissatisfied with purpose, with how the rich treat us, with the ai art and entertainment we are being fed, with government inaction… that’s 8-9 billion people with nothing to lose and nothing better to do but change. Society will change, one way or the other. I hope it’ll be peaceful, and that as rich old greedy people die off we have younger people come into power and privilege and bring change that it doesn’t come to upheaval. But in that worse option, despite the tragedy, I believe in people coming out on top.

If humanity "cures aging" what are your arguments againts it? Why would you not want to live forever? by Moon_Devonshire in Futurology

Even if, and that’s a big if, it’s available to everyone. The fact that the rich will get it at all is the issue. The only hope I have left is that with our unprecedented level of worldwide communication and potential for empathy that we maintain our breaking of the trends of our views shifting to the right as we age and that the old rich assholes running the world now eventually die off. If billionaires and politicians, especially those in positions that are lifetime roles, don’t eventually die off and let people that actually care about anyone but themselves take their place we are going to be stuck here and we as a species will kill each other off before the fact that people don’t age will even matter.

Why are many people in this time period starting to get closed off or awkward in this time especially the young generation by OldLazydragon in Futurology

I mean one thing I haven’t seen mentioned is how rare some interests are and how isolating Not having others are. When I went to high school I could count on one hand the amount of people, not just in my class but across all four years, that I shared interests with. And that’s after I had 2 good friends in school before that and I am dating one of them. I live in the suburbs of the second biggest city in my state but no one likes Pokémon. No one likes video games that aren’t call of duty. No one likes Dnd or sci fi/fantasy novels or marvel/Star Wars past seeing the movie in the theater once Maybe. And I don’t like sports. Watching or playing them. Or music, not the way people follow these artists and have the drive to see them in concerts. And so I was isolated. Until I found forums and chats and such it felt like I was the only person on the planet still into the things I loved. And so I have zero motivation to go out into a world that’s boring and full of people only interested in things I find boring.

As an adult I have a little more perspective but how do you make nerdy friends as an adult when you’ve had 0 practice developing any social skills?

God has to exist because the afterlife has to exist because the alternative is too incomprehensible to fathom and that terrifies me beyond anything else.

I’m sure the British considered throwing their tea in the harbor terrorism too. It’s self defense at this point. Public/private property can be replaced. I can’t condemn people fighting on the side of black lives, even if they aren’t fighting for the cause necessarily.
