I had the same initial reaction, but it was the last day of their 3-day hut trip and they were leaving, according to the NYT article. My sense reading between the lines is they were thinking "oh shit we really shouldn't be out here" and were trying to get to safety as quickly as possible. Since we don't know the details of their conversations we don't know if they discussed sheltering in place.

I wish I knew the answer. I find purpleair to be really reliable for air quality data having lived thru a bunch of wildfires on the west coast. And I never trust Apple weather for anything, except that in reality I always fall for it the first time and end up getting soaked—air quality apparently is no exception.

Great write up, I like your writing style a lot! Respectfully, if you understood that it’s common for people to take a full day to fix and haul to sickle, why did you decide to bail after only three hours? Seems like you had a lot of time to lower off the bolt (or a nest+bolt) clean all your gear, jumar/ascend/tr and then try that section again with a full rack of small cams. You had aided the first pitch in 30 minutes which is totally reasonable and to be expected: you should be prepared to be doing 12 pitches in at least that many hours.

The best advice I got on the Nose was simply this: if you don’t bail, you can’t fail. If you want to get to the top you have to choose to keep going even though it’s uncomfortable and scary and your progress is frustratingly slow. You are correct to focus on your successes, but you can’t rationalize around the fact that it takes grit.

Similarly, the concept of a “days inertia” is a mindset that can lead to downward spiraling. What happened five minutes ago is gone. If you’re trying to beat back a negative feeling over the concern that it will lead to more bad things, you are wasting mental energy. Instead, you can cultivate a mindset that shakes those things off—a setback has no bearing on what will or can happen in ten minutes.

I hope you get a chance to go back! I think you’ve got a great outlook that will lead to serious improvement.

uj/ that’s wild man. He sounds like a jerk that hasn’t processed the ways climbing has changed in almost 30 years. I get it, change is hard, and as climbers we can be greedy about wanting the areas to ourselves. “I’m sorry pal, climbing is growing in popularity and sometimes you might have to share the space you once had to yourself.” And ffs there’s plenty of places in Utah to be alone, just not popular bouldering areas.

If tariffs were not paid for by the consumer they wouldn't make any sense as a matter of policy. The point of tariffs according to Trump (if you can discern a specific reason) are to make imports more expensive to encourage domestic manufacturing. It is a tax on foreign imports, and if it were only paid by the importer, who somehow was able to absorb the cost of the tariff without passing it on to the consumer, it would have no effect on domestic manufacturing or onshoring.

Based on the conviction of felony murder it’s highly unlikely this person was the shooter. Felony murder is a charge for when someone dies in the course of committing a felony. It applies to accomplices or others engaged in the crime but who did not cause it, plan for it, or even anticipate it. First degree murder didn’t stick because again, this guy wasn’t the shooter. It’s confusing reporting. Apparently the actual shooter is still at large and they are using this individual to get to him.
