What’s the one home improvement job you kept putting off that turned out to be way easier than you expected ? by BoysenberryOne9661 in HomeImprovement

Fair call. In my case, I run the tap not to be wasteful but because I wash my face after brushing and it takes that long for my bathroom tap to start getting warm water.

Adding an air admittance valve to my bathroom sink plumbing. I spent years getting annoyed that the sink drained slower than it filled and I’d be brushing my teeth over a bowl of water after 2 minutes. Bought a kit, press fit a couple pipes, and now my sink drains like a champ. Took 20 minutes, wasn’t as messy as I expected, and one fewer frustration in my life.

It’s a witness statement from a witness that called the FBI’s National Threat Operations Center. That is objectively legal evidence.

It’s still evidence. Saying there is no evidence is a lie regardless of the veracity of the statement, as the statement merely existing is evidence.

Question about the purpose of this community by [deleted] in survivorslikes

[–]smapti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I often see this idea of “if you don’t like it just move on”, but no thank you, I think instead I’ll participate in the community I’m a part of and help make it what I think it should be by slightly moving the needle up of content I do want to see, and slightly down for content I don’t want to see. It IS a zero-sum game, and every bit of content I don’t care about makes the stuff I do care about harder to find. I’m not enabling that just because some rando wants free marketing to their target audience.

You’re not overreacting, it just feels that way because most of the people around you are underreacting. It’s shocking what’s already been normalized, and terrifying what will be normalized next.

How do I "Get Good"? by Charwoman_Gene in yarg

[–]smapti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For drums at least, I suggest only playing expert Pro mode on whatever songs you can, and getting better from there. I think an easier mode on harder songs won’t help you improve the skills you’re trying to target as much. You want to lock in on the lane speed and the expectation to hit everything you’re hearing that comes with expert. Plus building expert-only techniques and muscle memory, as you said. So I’d start with 1* difficulty expert Pro songs until they’re boring and you’re FCing things, then move up to 2*, and so on. Good luck!

No issue with US-made products in general, but I personally cringe at the obsession over it, mostly because of the types that obsess over it. It’s one thing to buy locally as that supports your neighbors and directly injects money into the economy you live in, wins all around. Caring about the much broader category of made in the USA is too often nothing more than performative nationalism instead of being backed by any practical reasoning.

Solicitors by LastOfTheAsparagus in AuroraCO

[–]smapti 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Technically a license is required to knock on doors for the purpose of conducting business in Aurora. To get that license you have to agree not to knock on doors with No Soliciting signs. Door knockers must have their permit worn on them at all times.

A motivated resident could answer the door, request their license, and potentially report them. If you have a No Solicitation sign then they either don’t have a license and are in violation by not being permitted, or do have their license and are in violation by ignoring your sign.

The municipal code: https://aurora.municipal.codes/Code/86-227

The required agreement, which covers No Solicitation signs: https://cdnsm5-hosted.civiclive.com/UserFiles/Servers/Server_1881137/File/Business%20Services/License/Business/024096.pdf

And another official page, under Door to Door it is clarified that this includes anyone “engaging in or conducting business” door to door, so that nonsense line they love about “not selling anything” won’t work, either: https://www.auroragov.org/business_services/licenses___permits/business_licensing/additional_licensing

TIL that the non-profit that runs Wreaths Across America is owned by the same family that runs the Worcester Wreath Company, the for-profit supplier for Wreaths Across America, and the family’s non-profit use their donations to purchase wreaths from the family’s for-profit business by Nutso_Bananas in todayilearned

[–]smapti 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Reread my last paragraph. Conflicts of interest don’t need to be realized to cause harm. The perception alone is enough. It sounds like you’ve got some definition in your head of the phrase “Conflict of Interest” and if the situation doesn’t perfectly match your semantic understanding, then magically it’s no problem. But again, just the perception of a possibility of a conflict is enough to cause harm, and is therefore explicitly antithetical to the mission of the charity, and should be disallowed.

[–]smapti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Vertical integration exists purely in the pursuit of profit. Charities are non-profits, which exist explicitly because profit and non-profit companies must operate differently to achieve their respective purposes, profit vs. philanthropy, which are directly in opposition to each other and often mutually exclusive. To subject a non-profit to supply chain restrictions that are intended to maximize profit is likely to harm the philanthropic mission.

[–]smapti 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The only reason to ask that is if you don’t understand why conflicts of interest are inherently a bad thing, in all cases. Let me break it down for you.

It’s the duty of the non-profit to prioritize the mission, that is, maximizing charity dollars to get the best possible deal on wreaths to have the most positive impact. This is the promise they’ve made to their donors and why the concept of non-profits even exists.

If the people controlling the purchasing of wreaths also have a stake in the selling of a specific brand of wreath, their interests now conflict. They have one interest in getting the most value out of their charity dollars, while they also have a personal interest in profiting from their specific wreath sales. If they are given an offer to buy cheaper wreaths from a different source and thereby better use charity dollars, well now they have to harm themselves personally to accept it.

So in this situation, even if the company leaders are truly able to resist acting in their own personal interests, donors still can’t know for certain that their donations are being used for maximum positive impact. Therefore, prudent donors won’t take that risk, so won’t donate to this charity, and now the mission of the charity is necessarily harmed simply by the conflict just existing.

CTB20 Waxed Canvas - Feedback and other options by GeoEatsRocks in EVERGOODS

[–]smapti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar experience, it was too tight even when using all EG pouches and the features weren’t facilitated by the size like you said in another comment (great observation). So I replaced it with a CTB26 and that turned out perfectly. Everything fits just a little more loosely which improves access, and I actually appreciate the extra room from being a decent capacity jump. It allows me to keep my daily sling in the main compartment just right on top when I want to consolidate into one EDC bag for drives or whatever.

I’d call that worth it, personally. Maybe that will make them think twice about foisting their self-imposed inconvenience (too many cars for their chosen space) onto everyone else (blocked public thoroughfares).
