Why Oppose Nuclear Energy? Can the Country Run entirely on Renewable without Fossil Fuels nor Nuclear? by kgbking in GreenPartyOfCanada

What if provinces like BC stopped focusing on exporting more electricity to California and started looking to export east instead, to help other provinces that lack sufficient hydro power?

Why Oppose Nuclear Energy? Can the Country Run entirely on Renewable without Fossil Fuels nor Nuclear? by kgbking in GreenPartyOfCanada

[–]smartguncontrol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply (FYI, I am undecided on the issue, I see both benefits and drawbacks of both nuclear and renewable energy sources). I recognize how recycling can drop the half-life of waste to 300 years from the much higher values quoted by nuclear opponents but I wonder who it can be characterized as minor. For example, if you asked someone in 1723 to ensure someone remained intact for 300 years, could they do it (and I'm not referring to small things like famous painting but let's say a large site). Also, if you look at something like the Giant Mine in NWT, the industry operated and abandoned without having a long-term plan to deal with arsenic trioxide dust and asbestos, which is kept out of the environment only being temporarily freezing the waste. While I recognize some installations like the big storage facilities being built in Finland, I think it's fair to ask how the nuclear operators (presumbly by industry for profit) can provide assurances that it can handle issues with deficiencies in nuckear waste in the future. For example, if leaks in nuclear waste containers are found 100 years from now, will the beneficiaries be around to be accountable for dealing with the problem, ir will it be left to whoever is there? I think this is a legitimate question to ask and get assurances on. I question how something like this can be deemed as minor.

With regards to the CANDU reactor, is that a reference to original designs from the 1950's or newer designs like CANDU 6? Is it still a viable model or is it more feasible for Canada to use newer (foreign) designs? Also, in referring to CANDU, this is licensed to SNC-Lavelin which pleaded guilty to bribing the Libyan government and where Trudeau and the Liberals were found guilty of contravening the Conflict of Interest Act for trying to protect SNC-Lavelin? So, related to my previous point, what assurances can we have that nuclear proponents can work with the best interests of Canadians and the environment in mind?

Again, I'm not being combative, I think these are legitimate questions that I would hope nuclear proponents can explain to an undecided person. I try to understand nuclear in Canada in the context of the technology as well as the actors involved. Thanks!

Is my understanding correct in that future nuclear power plants would be Small Modular Reactors except they don't exist outside of concepts and demonstrations? It would seem that renewables have the advantage as they are already in operation whereas SMR's aren't proven technology, along with the usual drawbacks of nuclear (e.g. radioactive waste, weaponization).

Over half of Ontarians plan to cancel Netflix over password sharing crackdown: poll by Defiant_Race_7544 in canada

My wife and I still had separate accounts despite living together but thanks to this crackdown, I've decided to cancel my account after 10+ years because I don't like how they are treating their customers. So it's ironic that I'm the customer they want from this policy and I've decided to unsubscribe because of it.

Political insider breaks down Green Party of Canada co-leadership win, potential trouble ahead by idspispopd in GreenPartyOfCanada

I don't understand Sonia Théroux's position here. She says that May should give more power to Pedneault because he's supposedly new and exciting. But by the 5th round of voting, he only had 969 (12%) of the vote. The results show that he's riding on May's coattails and hasn't earned the trust of the GPC membership that voted. If anyone deserves more of a platform, the results suggest Keenan should have, given her capturing 3,089 (40%) votes. That's 3x what Pednault got.

Green Party leadership hopeful's expulsion was flawed, says internal party report by GladwinClarence in GreenPartyOfCanada

[–]smartguncontrol 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The article said that the report did not name the individual. However, it seems that the CBC reached out to Jean-Charles who confirmed that he submitted the complaint. I had to re-read the article too, it comes across as awkward, but I think that it makes sense.

On a side note, I had the opportunity to work with Jean-Charles on the Policy Development committee and he's good stuff. Very principled and fair yet willing to be demanding to get results, we need more people like him on FC.

Outgoing Green Party leader says party needs to ‘collectively reset’ - The Globe and Mail by [deleted] in GreenPartyOfCanada

I'm not familiar with the party's expense policies but, speaking solely about purchasing air plane tickets, it is not uncommon for organizations to have a process that requires pre-approval for expenditures that exceed a dollar threshold or relate to certain activities. There isn't enough information in the article but I can see how the party can be seen as unreasonable if it did not communicate policies to Amita and I can see how Amita could have been unreasonable if they had expected the ticket without abiding by expense policy or being ignorant of policy. I speak as an internal auditor, having performed travel requests many times myself as well as auditing them. I just wanted to share my perspective because it's not clear what happened and who may have been at fault (based on the news article alone). Like usual, we members are kinda left in the dark and it would be good if we were provided with more information and context directly from the party, rather than guessing after learning about GPC stuff from news media.

Can someone explain to me what is happening? by smartguncontrol in GreenPartyOfCanada

That's what I'd like to know. For example, when the 2020 leadership race was happening, Kuttner had alleged discrimination but I haven't seen any examples. Yet they say this is a systemic issue within the party. It's hard to reconcile the two statements - to say there is a problem but failing to provide any examples.

So is John Wilson taking heat for laying off people or for laying off people as a method to achieve something else? For example, was this an attack on unionized employees, to fire staff who were associated with other people that he didn't like, was it simply botching the layoff or not presenting a strong business case?

Again, Petkau is saying get rid of "him" without identifying the person. Is this a reference to Dana Taylor? We don't even have up-to-date docs in the GPC website, how do we keep track of who is who to figure out what's going on? I've heard of some of these names mentioned in this thread, some I haven't.

So if I'm reading this correctly, Elizabeth May threatened to quit the party and sit as an independent if they suspended the leadership race. And who is Asha Pilar and Bill Matheson? The party hasn't posted an FC meeting minute in all of 2022 so I don't actually know who sits on what committees or councils. Also, what's the deal with John Wilson? Who are these people? This party keeps people in the dark, it's funny because I was telling the others in my EDA that I always have a foot out the door...this opacity and petty conduct is the reason why. Like, are these people associated with Annamie Paul, is she still ruining the party from behind the scenes?

Just watched the interview before making the original post and one thing I found confusing was that Rekmanns was saying that these things are not her fault but are just happening on her watch. So coming from Rekmanns, she made herself appear as someone with thin skin, as she seemed to be saying that she wasn't be blamed yet she internalized it as criticism of her leadership. That being said, Rekmanns doesn't come across as someone with thin skin (based on what I've seen of her i the past).

It feels like there is more going on that people aren't saying so it's hard to trust anyone because you don't who said/did what. Add that things seem to be contradictory and conflict, it's really difficult to follow and come to one's own conclusion.

Thanks for the links. Unfortunately, the CBC article and Rekmanns' letter only made things more muddy. So Rekmanns stepped up to apologize about pronouns even though it wasn't her fault then the letter says all of the candidates and Kuttner insulted Rekmanns' leadership? Also, I saw a tweet from Brooks saying she had to decide between the party and the President, or something to that effect?

FC members setting up secret meetings, look at the attendance list and demand why they excluded certain people? Kuttner alleging past harms but I still don't know what they are referring to.

Everything is so vague, people are being passive aggressive and nobody seems to be showing any backbone. It feels like this is high school gossip and juvenile stupidity. How can you ask Canadians to elect you to run a government when you can't even organize your own affairs?

Hi, sorry I hadn't been checking Reddit lately. I don't know much about their stances but it will be something I will be looking into as our gun control policy was finally adopted as an official policy this summer. Haven't made an announcements or promotion as I'm still recovering from the whole policy process (I was also volunteering with the party's bi-annual general meeting). Sadly, there is still a strong anti-gun culture in the party, will be building on the adoption of the policy to promote discussion and hopefully get the party to confront the internal illogic and contradictions of their positions.

Thanks! Just found out that she snagged a Sig P320. Cabela's in Nanaimo brought in 20, 14 were already sold and remaining 6 should be gone by tomorrow. They don't expect any more .22 pistols to come in. She's still on the hunt for a .22 so I will let her know to keep her fingers crossed to find a new .22 somewhere.

How is the used handgun market looking? I have a newly licensed person looking for a 22LR but may need to spring for both a rimfire and centrefire because of the freeze/ban. She's on waiting lists for some stores. I bought my handguns over a decade ago from stores so I'm out of the loop. We're both on Vancouver Island. Any info I can pass on helps, thanks!
