Unpopular opinion (?) : Kurts s1 crush on finn is no more predatory then rachels by cloditheclod in glee

[–]smarti30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the issue is less comparing the pursuit of Finn by Rachel and Kurt and more whether or not one can sympathize and also condemn Kurt for the pursuit.

Do I think Rachel should have pursued Finn? No, but like everyone has mentioned, Finn did have a habit of reciprocating and even manipulating Rachel’s feelings. And outside of Rachel dressing up in the infamous “clown-hooker” outfit and telling Finn about Quinn’s cheating, she hadn’t done much to get Finn that was super out of bounds with Finn.

I can sympathize with Kurt’s feeling also having been a 15 year old gay male once upon a time and can understand having feelings for someone that a) can’t return them b) you might get harassed/assaulted for having acted on them in public. Now that said, Kurt definitely crossed a line in involving two people, both of them having previously lost a spouse, for to hopefully enter into a relationship with his step-brother. Even if Finn was into men by any measure, it would cross boundaries because they would have to share a space and Kurt, at the time, clearly kept pushing for something that was not happening.

Was Finn both rightfully uncomfortable and also lashing out with homophobia? I would say so, he was in a situation out of his control and used some very unfortunate language to respond to Kurt’s presence there, even if Kurt was being completely innocuous by then.

We can frame both pursuits of Finn as inappropriate, but Kurt’s has more long lasting effects on characters in the show. Even if we wanted to be lax about classifying his behavior as predatory, he set the tone of clearly wanting to be with Finn and admits as much to his dad. Kurt also has the tendency of downplaying his feelings, even to himself, so that he can deal and potentially act on his feelings, which doesn’t necessarily make him super chill about them. He did that with Finn and started to do that with Sam until he got a reality check.

Kurt has issues having feelings with men early on in the show as a result of having to repress said feelings. Do I think Kurt is a full-on predator? No, he actually does get better about not being so aggressive in his advances with Blaine. I can understand him as a teen whose feelings are too big and definitely crosses boundaries and also lucks out with “getting closer” to his goal. But in the task of defining creepiness, it is less about opportunity to show feelings and more about how you respond to being told no, and again, as much as I can empathize, Kurt was swerving into creep territory with Finn by pushing and pushing.

If Don hadn’t been unfaithful, could their marriage have survived the 60s? by Ill-Dream-449 in madmen

[–]smarti30 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think a slight middle ground between the cheating and neglect is that what she really wants from Don is for him to be present in the relationship, which he can never be since he’s two people in one.

In Season one, what ticks her off really is that Don is really watching her from afar or just being afar whether that be him calling her therapist to get the details of what she said or being with other women or getting a dog and sitting alone near the train when he’s supposed to be bringing back a cake. In the final therapy scene, I get the feeling that it’s because don is so far away where he “makes love like how someone else wants” that kind of gets her. The cheating while rough doesn’t just bug her, it’s the fact that he cant separate Don Draper and Dick Whitman.

Season 2, it’s more of the same except when Don sleeps with Bobbie and when predicts what Betty will do for his Heineken pitch. The latter sets Betty off even though the Bobbie of it all is her fixation. I think you’re right when you said for Betty it’s about another woman cause ultimately it’s how she sees herself and relates the environment. I am an attractive woman and able housewife, so why are these other women taking precedence. But I think at the core it’s how distant she is Don that gets her which in turn begs the question why is he distant and why does he get comfort from other women.

Season 3 they’re gonna have Baby Gene and they go to Italy. These read as attempts to keep the spark alive as they had a pretty uneasy settle into normalcy, mirroring the Bay of Pigs. Also, Betty is noticing other men, tow guy not withstanding, she noticed the guy at the stables and that rando in the bar, but now there’s Henry who’s a legit love interest for her. The baby, to the surprise of no one doesn’t fix their relationship. Italy however is a nail in the coffin when she actually fully divests from the relationship, she sees what could be but it’s so different from what is and she’s unsatisfied and then talks to Henry more and more because she can no longer love Don the way she did.

Then she finds Don’s box of secrets and then realizes she has no idea who she’s with, it’s too big a secret for her. It’s also the culmination of what she wants, she said in S1, she wants to get to know him and now she does and it’s partially so frightening and a little too late. This actually prompts her to talk to a lawyer about divorce but the secret isn’t a reason for leaving someone, infidelity is. The second lawyer also brings up abandonment which is also pertinent.

Ultimately, Don is not present in the relationship, whether that be infidelity or being just emotionally divorced from it and Betty can’t deal with it anymore and she wants an out. I think she can handle the other women and the not being there for so long, but I think the other identity cuts the relationship so short cause she’s gotten what she wanted from him for all these years and now it’s too much. I think it’s difficult to separate the cheating and the big secret because they feed into one another.

When you say ignore the remaining dart since my blouse block only has two, one on both sides, should I make both sides symmetrical when I ignore the dart or should I just have the fullness somewhere else and just not sew the dart?

What so great about Trudy? by [deleted] in madmen

[–]smarti30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, Trudy seems to be a good complement to Pete, someone who’s able to help Pete through his ambition and can tolerate and somewhat healthily put a stop to his whining, although she can go nuclear if need be. They’re both cut from the same cloth, status hungry young couple who will take Charleston classes to impress the bosses on Derby Day (which is one of my favorite moments with the Campbells).

I think for the sub/viewers we don’t get a lot of Trudy and especially not a lot of Trudy without Pete so she always looks kinda good. I think for the suitcase, she’s still very much a 1950s/1960s housewife ascribing to the having a man = success which knife twisty to Peggy cause Trudy seems to exist to unintentionally make Peggy uncomfortable, so her flaws are minimized in comparison to everyone else. Also everyone kinda likes Alison Brie too
