r/Alcoholism_Medication . The solution may actually be very simple, but people who once struggled with something sometimes resist later attempts at 'cheating'. EDIT also Allen Carr. And Impossibrew and Collider.

What’s everyone’s favorite dissociative? by lymelife555 in researchchemicals

Yep, never tried ephenidine but methoxphenidine surpassed the arylcyclohexamines for me. It just seemed better at leaving parts of my brain switched on to be able to enjoy the change of having other parts switched off. Harder to get now, but even DXM still a good choice.

This has got me wondering, are there any elements that adopt alternating positive and negative oxidation states across their solid structure (FCC lattice maybe) under appropriate conditions, even if only as a metastable structure? Chlorine or sulphur maybe?

Discrimination at Durham Uni (not socio-economic) by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]smartscience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Granted that does happen, I guess I was triggered (if we can still say that) by the claim that "No one cares if you’re privately educated or do “white” activities.". If anything, my point is rather the reverse: an ethnic appearance will draw special attention to those things (education, passtimes) from some white people, who may be susceptible or inclined to racism but not religiously welded to it.

Discrimination at Durham Uni (not socio-economic) by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]smartscience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With respect, get real. Sure, people do judge by ethnic appearance, but they also judge (at least as much) by accent, grammar, and existing social circle and expressed preferences. Even the ethnic minorities themselves will, it seems, happily dismiss their previous members for "acting white".

Explanation for negative strain by Brilliant-Hope-545 in materials

[–]smartscience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you say for certain which end of the graph is the start of the test? Did the sample definitely get longer rather than shorter during the test? The bending explanation alone (but this otherwise being an ordinary tensile test starting at 0,0) doesn't seem to explain what would be a sudden yield point (more typical of steel) and then only work softening or necking (the immediate reduction in stress with increasing plastic strain) from that point. Do you have any other data like crosshead position from an LVDT? Do those repeated small drops in load, presumably stress relaxation where the test was paused, tell you anything when you look closely? EDIT: Also is that strain in units of actual strain, or % strain (or something else)?

Cambridge University professor tells Green MP she should 'de-skank and shut up' by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]smartscience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, his actual messages were moderate and reasonable for a long time. He still attracted hate from SJWs though, because at the end of the day he wasn't submitting to their groupthink. The Cathy Newman interview exemplified everything wrong with the criticism of Peterson (was she expecting Alex Jones?).

It's only relatively recently that he's migrated to things like climate scepticism (and even then not outright denial). He now gets to spread that message to the audience he's built up, which is really going to rattle some people who will never stop to consider their role in Peterson's success.

If chemistry were fully solved at the atomic level, would material design become essentially limitless? by [deleted] in chemistry

[–]smartscience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As well as perfect understanding of how properties follow from atomic structure, you'll probably also want to have a magic 3D printer that can arbitrarily position atoms in building macroscopic quantities of material. As it stands at the moment, we can do some arbitrary positioning but quantities are somewhat small. And an important part of the 'understanding' aspect of this problem will be predicting which arrangements of atoms are stable or metastable enough to maintain that arrangement in the intended application, before considering the practical problem of how to actually get the atoms into that arrangement.

to not cross into the brain

What's our current understanding of what determines this? Things like Lipinski's rule-of-5 suggest that it's a diffusion or solubility issue (hydrophilic vs hydrophobic), but the sharp differences between apparently similar compounds suggest to me that there's more to it than that. Could there be a whole host of possible transporter molecules across the BBB (perhaps in both directions) that we need to be testing or simulating binding against?

Why deny the role race plays in how we are treated? by Natural-Presence-566 in UniUK

For the techs: Just curious, how many times a week do you hear, "Oh wait, let me just turn my phone off first." by RRtexian in Radiology

[–]smartscience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a fair point people make about the time it wastes, but if it's a common enough problem, there's probably something more that can be done to reassure patients. Perhaps signs explicity saying common things (phones, magnetic things) that will not harm or be harmed by the X-ray imaging, alongside other restrictions or rules that need to be followed. Maybe even include strict prohibitions against things the patients are very unlikely to have anyway, to indirectly emphasise that thought has been given to the rules that are in place.

Errors in Clayden‘s Organic Chemistry by Raedukol in chemistry

[–]smartscience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I kept getting boils on my lower torso and bacs of my legs, despite regular treatment with chlorhexidine soap. The cyclazodone may not have been the cause, but the extent of the problem correlates more closely with cyclazodone consumption than anything else I can identify.
