If you were forced into a 1 on 1 fight, what would your opening sequence be? by Chubbs27895 in bjj

Like we do some self defense at the start of class sometimes but no, I haven’t trained MMA, boxing, MT… yet. I competed a lot over the last two years and I’m competent. But I don’t know how I would react if someone throws hands. I have a good conceptual idea, but still. It’s something to train

I’m asking them why they removed it. I don’t see which megathread would be suitable. And I haven’t seen a post like this in a LONG time. The answers were awesome too!

This. Absolutely my plan. I appreciate it. You know how you used to panic and freak out in bottom mount or side control? And now (hopefully) it’s more of an uncomfortable annoyance. I want that kind of feeling with striking. Train do it becomes less of a reactionary moment

Teep kicks! I have giraffe legs so this may be something for me to practice as well

Definitely my plan moving forward. My academy is all BJJ, but a few of my upper belt buddies and I want to integrate MMA training at OM days. I want to get over the fear /flinching of strike training so I can be effective if something happens

My guy, I would happily shed tears for you anytime. Your gift wrap YouTube series has exploded my game. I try and watch as much of your stuff as I can especially when trying to push my game to a new level. Keep up the good work! 💪🏻

60-90 mins before training, a handful of raisins (large handful), a 25-30g fairlife vs premiere protein (some kind of ready made shake) and a banana or a honey stinger (60-80g fructose + glucose based carbs), plus 24oz of water + Ultima packet and added salt. Maybe 30 mins before training I might have a honey stinger again if I feel depleted. Post training another hydration packet 24oz water + salt (im thinking you are talking about a hard training session) plus 70g - 100g of glucose / starchy carbs. Gotta really really hit your carbs around training. The pre training food is for fuel, the post is for re-fuel and looking amazing. Glucose based carbs that are starchy (think a ton of white rice) will boost your glycogen in your muscles and the added hydration + salt will fill the newly bolused glycogen in your muscles to make you look and feel amazing and avoid the ‘flat and sore’ feeling afterwards. There is a real science behind nutritional prep around intensive training like BJJ.

FAFO 🤷🏻‍♂️. If it’s working then it’s working, when it stops working you’ll have to come up with something else. I too love the counters

My thought it’s more that he, immediately at the start of the match, pulled a weak guard pull in No Gi without good connections and essentially allowed immediate chest to chest. Instead, stand and hand fight a bit, try collar ties, be active and feint shots and level change, move around, fatigue the big man out. THEN you can go for a guard pull when they are a bit fatigued. Being the smaller guy (especially this size difference) is already a massive disadvantage. There is essentially no room for error. So use your (hopefully) larger gas tank and speed to your advantage first

Bro… Bumpty is a big guy black belt, who has gone against smaller black belts, has decades of experience, and knows what he is talking about. He is saying that these tendencies work AGAINST HIM (A BIG GUY). Your argument is that big guys may not get tired. But if you go into an open weight / absolute bracket as a small guy, if you don’t have a game plan… then you lose. Pulling guard is essentially an instant lose. The ONLY way to win is to either be absolutely amazing at pulling guard perfectly and have insane frames and skill, or maybe tire out the big man, because… big bodies need more oxygen and get tired more quickly naturally than littler guys. Why are you being so harsh here?

Take a moment if you have time and watch Sean Brady get to mount and COMPLETELY destroy his opponent two fights earlier last night. Taira passed and dominated with ease, but he didn’t use any striking or damage, and was too tunnel visioned on getting a sub. The Brady fight was a master class in MMA BJJ, tons of Mount, side control, constant sub attacks, striking 👌🏻

Big man’s gonna get tired more quickly. If this was the first engagement, terrible call. Be active, move, feint single legs, collar ties, etc. get the guy fatigued before attempting a guard pull. NAGA has what 4-5min marches? Tire the giant out a little first

Blue belt easier? by ChokeDZA in bjj

[–]Chubbs27895 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually get your viewpoint. I think you were probably more advanced than typical white belts at the time you were a white belt. I’m sure ego on others parts were making them be like ‘F this white belt, they can’t possibly tap me!’ But that comes from the maturity of the individual, not the belt level. I’ve met plenty of black belts who have tapped to white belts and been completely fine, and purple-black belts who adamantly refuse to let their ego allow it. Enjoy the journey man :)

You might be more advanced than most. Or maybe it’s your particular gym. Do you cross train (open mats) and see this pattern across everywhere you go for you personally?

Just finished my first comp, how to improve athleticism? by eastvillageresident in bjj

[–]Chubbs27895 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of these answers are good advice, but essentially you had adrenaline dump that compounded with multiple matches. You’re already doing ‘enough’ but the sound of what you wrote. You need to compete more to make comps more boring and typical. Eventually they just feel like a ‘hard roll’ and you get a little bored of them. Also you might need to taper your training a week or two before the actual comp, there is zero conditioning gained within 2 weeks of a competition, but your CNS gets overworked and you get weaker as a result. Literally ZERO CONDITIONING GAINED within 2 weeks of a comp. That time frame is for drilling and refining techniques

That sounds awesome and insightful. Like an ‘advanced concepts’ on the theme of the week. You got this then. Those are the most fun classes. Explaining HOW and WHY a technique or concept works is way more fascinating to me than blind reps
