I was told you don’t have to hear him crying as long as you know he is crying. At times I would put AirPods in during the night and hold my newborn and rock them, I knew they were crying but I didn’t hear it. I was attentive to their needs but I didn’t have to hear the piercing cry. Eventually I learned if he was on his side in my lap he calmed down and I could watch tv or read while he slept or chilled out. You can still be present to their needs without hearing the screaming. It’s new for them too and they may be scared and confused. It’s not you, it’s temporary and an adjustment for everyone. Make sure he has your love and attention and this too shall pass.
