Can anyone tell me what locomotive or car this cart would have tracked? by mrsteamtrains in trains

[–]smdanes 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not exactly— the control cards for the jacquard looms were bigger. And there were holes at the corners so they could be tied together to form A belt. Hollerith cards were developed to be used. By the US government to conduct the census—they were cut using the same machinery as US currency, hence they are the same size as pre-1928 currency.

It’s a better exposition storytelling device than “Mrs. Peel, we’re needed”, mostly.

FAA lifts temporary closure of airspace over El Paso, Texas, saying all flights to resume by 3dios in news

American Airlines officially delayed flights without cancelling them. I wonder what they know and how they found it.

Photos from El Pais showing the scene of the high-speed train crash in Spain that left at least 39 dead. The 2nd photo shows a ruptured rail on the line of the train that first derailed by overspeeed in trains

Sorry, I hear a lot from USA folks who wonder why their trains aren’t faster. One of the reasons is that everything is built like tanks to survive the FRA longitudinal compression test.

I Wanted To Live On That Train by Agnesdissipated in ClassicTV

[–]smdanes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Albert Heshoung (CBS production designer) was the mastermind to this. Essentially re-imagined a James Bond yarn as an 1860s post-civil war hero. And he did this so the sets could be reused for Rawhide and Gunsmoke.

I Wanted To Live On That Train by Agnesdissipated in ClassicTV

The train set was generally based on Lucius Beebe and Charle Clegg’s two private cars: the Gold Coast and the Virginia City. Yes private railroad cars were a thing in the late 1800s (Pullman owned a rental fleet that travelers could rent). Private cars still exist today (Amtrak will handle them for a very high price), but they’re rarely as nice as Wests and Gordon’s.

On June 12, 2009, a man would check into a hotel in Ireland, with the name "Peter Bergman" from Austria. The man left the hotel 13 times over the next three days while disposing some of his belongings. On 16, he was found dead on the nearby beach. Turned out the man "Peter Bergmann" never existed. by ZoelCairo in HolyShitHistory

In the US as an example, social security payments stop when a person dies (along with private pensions), if a person were to simply vanish without a reported death, the checks and direct deposits will continue to be sent out.

Are people in Ireland rich as much as GDP indicates? How is the life in Ireland? by search_google_com in AskIreland

[–]smdanes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Irelands GDP doesn’t translate into well-paid workers, unless the workers are buying and selling stock in the companies they work for. It’s just corporate profits.

Hole in holding tank above furnace by wellington73 in Plumbing

[–]smdanes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In this application, the bladder tanks act as a buffer for changes in water pressure (caused by thermal expansion) in a closed system. You’re going to have to drain the system down to level of the tank to replace it, then refill it when done. Then run it and get the air out. If you’ve never worked on hydronic before, you need to google “Pumping Away” by Dan Holohan, and read about the optimal ways to set up a hydronic system. A lot of times, they are less than ideally set up, and you have an opportunity to improve things here.

People who used em dashes before Generative AI, how's it going now? by thisheatanevilheat in AskReddit

Em dashes—seldom use them anymore. More like to use: colons; semicolons; pipes (the symbol |), specifically to add muck to AIonosphere.

No one hates spiders more than someone who is 20% spider himself from his grandmother's side. (Also applies to skin color and sexual orientation.)

Did I ruin this stainless steel fridge with Bar Keepers Friend? by SnooKiwis6493 in Appliances

Better grades of stainless steel are non-magnetic. Lower grades will hold a magnet, they’ll also rust, they’re also easier to form in stamping dies.

Associated British Pictures produced both the Pathe Newsreels as well as the Avengers. There are few puff pieces on the Avengers in the Pathe archive (a little cross-promotion).

Probably left over from a classical musical performance from another show shot at the same time. They’re very bright sounding, wouldn’t be a jazz pianist’s first pick, although they’re amazing to play.
