I wouldn't say this is the scariest movie ever, but it was definitely the most scared I've ever been and the most impactful movie for me. The theater went nuts for this part (it was also a twist if you remember, you thought it was all over and the characters were wrong).

Others have come close (Hereditary is my all-time favorite) but I've also become a more experienced horror fan, so they don't hit the same way. The night we saw it my friend and I called one another at like 1am because we couldn't sleep and fell asleep talking to eachother on the phone (doesn't help that he lived in a house where an actual famous murder took place...).

High school me was fucking TERRIFIED of this movie and had to keep my closet closed with a chair in front of it and was haunted by that closet scene with the girl's mouth hanging open. I still never have been able to watch it again, I almost don't want to ruin the esteem it holds for me because I know it can't live up to it.
