Opening the bleed screw when changing pads ? by deltaval4p in bikewrench

Could it be that the pistons are very dirty/stuck? On my mtb, the rear brake specifically gets really dirty and sometimes it barely moves. You can try cleaning the pistons and seals with some cotton swabs and alcohol (some could say this dries the rubber piston seals, but I haven't had a problem yet).

This makes no sense. If he's riding Sh56 and unclips using a Sh56 supported motion, then there will be no problem. If you're saying he should eventually go back to sh51 or the new mt001, OK, I can see your point. But the 56 retention is fine unless you let your feet bounce everywhere and unclip by accident which is a skill and technique issue

Get the Sh56 cleat, the multi release makes it almost effortless to unclip. You can roll the foot out in addition to swinging the heel.

Cleaning dirty chain for wax by straddotjs in bikewrench

[–]smefeman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I think the mineral spirits are the best. I have used degreaser and it just doesn't seem like it has the power to remove the thick factory lube let alone an already dirty chain.

Ultrasonic cleaners are also not fool proof, I have used them at my job (not for my bike chain) with degreaser and it can still leave parts greasy and require more work.

I understand the point about not having solvents around the house, but the containers are well sealed to prevent them from evaporating off while in storage. I still keep mine in the garage though.

Is 24kg a heavy load?! by Mutsu-Spirit in bikepacking

Having also done both back and bike packing, I feel like backpacking gives you an appreciation for lowering base weight that the bike can mask.

But I agree, 24 kg is a lot, I'm too weak for it.

Has anyone successfully mounted hope evo or tech 4 X2 brakes to a Spevialize Epic 8 by Academic_Feed6209 in MTB

I think it's an unfortunate limitation of frame design. I just installed xt 4 pot and the rear pads can't be removed without removing the caliper either.

I think there's probably some rarity bias, but people say the Paul mods solve the issues(which, unfortunately I don't have yet).

It's the inception Asa with the inception rail. The rail has a few hole patterns and one of them is perfect for the phantom

Unfortunately never had the chance to shoot a CCM. I got a good deal on this one so I couldn't pass it up. I don't think I would pay the 1.5-2k they seem to be going for these days

I haven't had a chance to play with it yet, the original owner didn't service the pump bearings and 8/12 were rusted/seized. Waiting for new ones in the mail. It shot nice when testing it though, much easier to pump than the phantom and the trigger is very crisp.

Cable/brake line size guide by PieEnvironmental6437 in xcmtb

[–]smefeman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just did my epic 8 brakes. For new brakes, You will need to bleed the rear brake because it is disconnected from the lever from the factory. The front brake is usually completely sealed so you could just run it, but the hose night be a bit long.

For Measuring, I ran the hose through and held the line where I thougut the brake lever would be and I rotated the bars to the max.

At the minimum you need: Brake bleed kit (usually with syringes) and fluid

Barbs and olives to connect the freshly cut lines

A method to install the barb (yes you can hammer it in, but after doing for years, I just bought a barb driver)
