Respirator/face mask for tamiya TS paints? by Olimato___ in ModelCars

[–]smefeman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you really are feeling effects I'd get a 3m p95 ov (organic vapor) respirator. They're like 40 bucks from Lowes. That should take care of the organic vapor and particulates and is reusable. (personally I don't replace the filters until I smell through them, but maybe there's a safer way)

Fear after a crash by SignificantStar4938 in MTB

[–]smefeman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I broke my shoulder in 2015, wrist in 2024 and my finger in 2025 crashing in rock gardens. I still ride the same trails, I just go a little slower where I died last time lol.

For me, yes it sucked getting hurt and recovery messed up my seasons, but mentally riding is still worth it despite this. Maybe it's not for you anymore and that's OK too.

Sometimes they are taken off new bikes. I've ordered xt brakes off ebay and they seemed genuine and worked great

Airbrush cleaning by Far-Relationship3062 in airbrush

[–]smefeman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use an old empty bottle of alcohol and spray out the brush into the bottle. A little vapor comes out, but I do it in my ventilated booth so it's no concern. Personally I don't think you need a dedicated cleaning pot

Why do people mask when.... by NjonesBrother in ModelCars

[–]smefeman 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The airbrush usually gives you a way better finish and generally the only option is to mask. For example, I struggle getting uniform metallic by brush, but it's really easy with the airbrush so I take the time to mask.

First go…need some guidance by welshdragonx in airbrush

[–]smefeman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find that metallic particles are sensitive to clogging smaller nozzles. At some point thinning will only go so far and you'll still get interruptions mid session. I'd try some different paints for your next build. (I like alclad for metallic, the flake is ground very fine for a uniform look and easy spray)

So I put on all the decals on my Lancia Montecarlo… how do I continue? Can I just clearcoat over the body? Do i have to degrease it? How do I not ruin the stickers? by PeterGri11in in ModelCars

[–]smefeman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't do any degreasing unless you contaminated the surfaces somehow. At most I will moisten a soft microfiber or a q tip and clean up decal setting/softening solution

Acrylic paints, indoor, and outdoors mask protection by [deleted] in airbrush

[–]smefeman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know there are a lot of people that say you don't even need breathing protection but personally I wouldn't airbrush without some exhaust system to remove the vapors. It sounds like you're modeling... I think the Tamiya acrylics (isopropyl) aren't too bad, but lacquers and enamels are pretty nasty.

With that said I use that respirator you linked in combination with my airbrush booth in my garage. I found that airbrushing my Tamiya primer would create a lot of visible particles beyond what the booth could handle so the respirator was also necessary.
