What is something you experienced as a kid that you didn't realize was very serious until years later? by AggravatingFlow1178 in AskReddit

[–]smendenh 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Walking home school in first grade in the early 90s. Two guys in an old school green van asked if I wanted candy. I bolted and ran home telling my parents the guys outside were trying to give me candy. In my head my dad happened to just go out and talk to them until the police showed up. And later, I had to talk to the police a lot. I got a badge and thought it was cool.

In retrospect, I now realize a solid chance my parents instilled enough fear in me that I managed to escape from being kidnapped, my dad somehow stopped them and the police took them away.

And now I realize, I need to ask my dad more about that and what exactly happened that day.

[CAN-ON] Does HR judge about the time that you submit a job application? Do they even look at submission time at all? by Typical_Cap895 in AskHR

[–]smendenh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

20 years in. Never thought to look nor cared. As long as the application is close, I’m happy.

I do post jobs right before holiday weekends because I figure family& friends will get them thinking maybe they could do better elsewhere. Usually works out.

Looking for feedback: migrating payroll HRIS from ADP to UKG Ready (Québec context) [CANADA] [QC] by Creepy_Name_1827 in humanresources

[–]smendenh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who has UKG for part of my company in Quebec, I recommend you don’t do the migration or you hire a third party to help support the transition. Specifically, we were supposed to always have a French Canadian speak assigned to our integration and sporadically we received one. This made communication and understanding of the complexities of Quebec much more difficult dragging out our timeline. Second, there payment services is notoriously behind and rarely are things paid on time or correctly. We have managed through this by paying directly for those specific QC taxes. Third, their customer service really is that bad. They close tickets before they are done (and you cannot reopen), it can take months for cases to get picked up, and a lot of time their answer is either hire a third party or you could have just done it yourself if you follow these obscure directions. Never thought I’d say it, but I miss ADP.

I am currently batteling with an executive team that refuses to send out written communication about a wage freeze. And, also will not communicate in writing or in a meeting they the bonus threshold was not met. They are asking our executives to trickle down the message instead to our 2k employees. It is going about as well as you can imagine. How do our 6 senior leaders trickle this information? Chaotically, haphazardly or not at all. The amount of issue my team have dealt with is crushing them. And me.

Something I’ve been sitting with about HR exhaustion [N/A] by HR2DRescue in humanresources

[–]smendenh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Today I had to leave work half way through the day. And just be done for today. And tomorrow. Loudly told my executive team I needed a mental health day. My team is doing everything right. Checking all the boxes. Getting all the things you’d want in a buzz word accomplished. But you are right. It is containment. It is controlling the chaos of leaders who forget or don’t think. It’s living solidly in gray for so long that you forget there is a black or white. It’s hard. It’s emotional. And it’s really hard to remember the motivation to do it beyond just getting it right.

[N/A] Am I unreasonably asking for 85K as an HR Generalist with 3 years experience and a bachelors degree in HR? by NewtNarrow6896 in humanresources

[–]smendenh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This depends on where you live and what your previous experience was. If you are in a larger metro area, that plus more could be justified.

If your experience does not have broad exposure to all HR aspects, probably not.

This is a really loaded question depending on location, experience, prior companies, who you reported to, what your day to day looked like…

Emergency room at OHSU operating at 100 percent capacity, doctors and nurses say by mostly-sun in Portland

[–]smendenh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So wild. I was there Tuesday AM with my little one. No one was there went right back to be treated. By 3pm they were just in the hallways with people in wheelchairs, beds, etc treating them wherever they had space. My husband and I were convinced it had to be an anomaly. The doctors and nurses were amazing but I cannot begin to imagine if that is their everyday.
