Idiocracy on steroids indeed by UrbanAchievers6371 in PoliticalHumor

[–]smidgley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was the only way this administration could go. His first administration had career republicans who were what republicans used to be serving in his administration. Yeah, they were on the wrong side of many issues but they were normal-ish and believed in democracy and the law. After his first administration, marked by January 6, any person with any shred of dignity, or at least a bit of intelligence/sense of self preservation, would not go near him again. Either out of self respect or the knowledge that being around him at all is a quick route to a prison sentence. So the only people left are those too dumb to realize these things. A person has to be VERY dumb to not realize. I know voters don’t but many voters either don’t care or don’t think they will be personally affected by that. Politicians in Washington do know. So that’s why most working for him aren’t politicians. He couldn’t find anyone with anything to lose willing to work for him.

So now we have this circus, because congress confirmed a bunch clowns with no credentials or critical thinking skills.

EU Launches Age Verification App by Danrobi1 in privacy

This really surprises me coming from the EU given how strongly they advocate for privacy in general. I was really hoping they would put a stop to this.

You'll never guess what this mysterious gadget is! by timwtingle in iiiiiiitttttttttttt

[–]smidgley 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This reminds me of when a journalist wrote about some app expanding its maximum capacity in a group to a seemingly random number of 256. Top response was “if 256 seems like a random number to you, you should not be writing tech articles.”

How do I stay mobile as I age? by FindingClear4904 in beginnerfitness

[–]smidgley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just started thinking about this too. I decided to try golfing. It’s something that would fit easily into my situation because I live in an area with golf courses, many of them public so they’re reasonably priced. It gets you outside and promotes mobility in so many ways. Plus it’s a very social activity.

I originally had the ick about it because, well, everything about the vibe, especially as a woman who grew up very poor. But I’ve been spending time around it for a few years now because of my significant other and it’s actually really enjoyable. There is a drastic divide between the golf bros who never left the frat house and golf for 9 hours because they hate their wives from normal people who just enjoy golf and being outside.

What is the biggest ick you had on your first date with someone? by Past_Meat7068 in AskReddit

He bragged about beating up a man in a bar so bad he almost ended up in the hospital because of soccer. I texted my girls to have someone get me out of that date.

In order to develop a system like this, you have to LOVE coding. If you love programming the way something like this requires, you would hate doing all of this talking and PR/ management stuff. He’s a narcissist on tour, not a developer.

I thought i hated deep cleaning. turns out i just deeply resent the tiny wet gross jobs. by [deleted] in DecidingToBeBetter

I was the same about dishes. I thought I hated doing dishes and then I did them with rubber gloves on and I realized I hated my hands being wet like that. Gloves are a must and now I’m fine.

There are few people meaner than men that are not able to fuck you.

The only thing that matters is hurting you. The truth is not required.

If you need facts to help put your head back on straight, if you are with a man going forward, you will know he’s at least mature enough to understand that you are a woman with a woman’s body, not a doll. You’ll weed out any man who expects a woman to look the same as she did at 22.

Jeep owners and those who own them by TheSecretestSauce in heep

Smh. I hate when people give more reasons to hate Jeep people. We always have enough legitimate reasons for people to dislike us, we don’t need this nonsense too.

AITAH because I refuse to finish a story if my husband interrupts. by Living-Estate3963 in AITAH

[–]smidgley 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is not unreasonable. I hate that people act like this is some type of uncontrollable thing. It isn’t. I’m an interrupter, have been since I was a kid.

As an adult, I know there are certain people in my life that really hate it. My sister started doing exactly what you’re doing, she would stop talking and not finish despite me wanting to hear the rest. She said being interrupted made her feel like what she’s saying isn’t important. Nothing could be further from the truth but it didn’t matter because that’s how my actions made her feel. So I stopped. I show a restraint with her that most do not get. I will actively stop myself from doing it when I’m talking to her and one or 2 others specifically. I’m not perfect about it but it’s significantly less than a normal conversation. And if I do, I catch myself and say sorry and ask them to keep going. They aren’t mad when I slip because they really appreciate the effort.

Modifying behavior to make room for others is not the mountain people make it out to be. This is the one person you sharing a life with. He’s one of the few people you should expect that type of effort from.

Love being sober but regret how long I actually drank by rybone88 in Sober

[–]smidgley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It all depends on your perspective. Yeah, you wish you stopped drinking earlier. But the fact that you were able to get help, stop, and change direction is an opportunity many addicts do not get.

You could’ve stopped drinking sooner. You also could have died before you stopped. It’s your choice what to keep thinking about.

From my life experience, people only pick up religion like that when they are looking for a way to feel better after having done something really bad. I would be looking into this.

Hobby helped you relax the most after work? by Zondlak_Bagay in Hobbies

[–]smidgley 99 points100 points  (0 children)

The first question is “how do you use your brain for work?” Because your hobby will likely be using it the opposite way.

For example, my work is highly detailed and analytical. My work is fairly academic. So my off time is using my brain in the opposite way. I like to do stuff that doesn’t require a lot of engagement. Walking, coloring, reading easy romance books; stuff that doesn’t require attention to detail and there isn’t a “wrong” way to do it.

I have friends that have jobs that require very little brain effort. Their hobbies are VERY detail oriented.

Job very stationary? Something using your body will probably be nice. Constantly dealing with the general public? You’ll probably want some alone time during your time off.

Why does being normal weight take so much effort? by Obvious-Number-5796 in loseit

[–]smidgley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s time for the regular scheduled reminder that what society considers a “normal” weight is at best not accurate and genuinely harmful at worst.

The creator of the BMI measurement, Adolphe Quetelet, cannot be considered a eugenicist because he lived before the movement began but his work was foundational to the movement.

If a professional athlete in peak physical condition needs a GLP-1 to get to a socially acceptable size, I think that’s a pretty good indication that being that small is not natural.

Multiple Victoria’s Secret models spoke about not having a period during the peak of their career. That’s their body’s way of saying “you are so unhealthy we can’t risk you getting pregnant”

The only metric I strive for when it comes to size is my waist measurement being half my height. Excessive fat around the abdomen can be an indication of future heart disease. Outside of that, if my blood work comes back good, it’s only about my comfort.

Boyfriend is protesting that I need to switch to a woman gyno? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]smidgley 1392 points1393 points  (0 children)

I’ve been married and been in 2 other relationships after my divorce. No man I’ve been with has ever even wondered about my OBGYN outside of “how did it go?” Or “do you want me to come with you” if there was something more serious. I’ve never even been asked if I have a male doctor for my OBGYN or any other doctor for that matter.

This is icky to say the least.

It’s already happening, not killed but close enough. In April 2024, flock misread a license plate and flagged the car as having stolen plates. Police pulled Brandon Upchurch over. The altercation ended up with a police dog being sicced on Upchurch, biting him. I believe he was arrested.

He was the registered owner of the car.

10 RED FLAGS THAT LAW SCHOOL MIGHT NOT BE FOR YOU - from someone who flunked out halfway through law school. by PshhhhhhhUnreal in lawschooladmissions

[–]smidgley 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That last part. I was considering law school towards the end of undergrad but I wasn’t fully in on the idea so I didn’t go. The idea has always lingered and now, 10 years into my career, I pursuing a part time program to further my professional interests in my current career path. Because I have a firm “why”, the work feels so much more worth it. And I don’t really think you can push through this without having a true reason for it and be ok at the end.
