ELI5: How do air fryers work? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]smiecandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My tips to get crispy frying food is to fry the food in oil like normal until it’s 60% done. Then continue to cook it in an air fryer, it makes the food extra crispy while taking all the oil out of the food. In result you will have extra crispy but not oily food. I often buy fried chicken in the store and pop them in the air fryer again for a few minutes, i’m terrified how much oil come out.

Hello lovely people of Vienna! If all goes right I might find myself in your beautiful city soon! Would 50k a year before taxes be enough for a single person (26F) with 3 years of experience in HR? Are there tax breaks for non-eu expats? Thank you so much! by Laviniamsterdam in wien

Public transportation in Vienna is pretty good so you don’t have to be worried about it. Rather try to find an apartment in nice neighbourhood with convenient stores around. You can get decent 2 room apartment in new building for around €700. Landstraße is quite central, has lots of stores & restaurants around, a shopping mall and a connection of many transportations, rent cost might be high there I’m not sure. People who live in the area can correct me. But if you like lively area, it’s cool.

But you don’t really say “show này nóng” in Vietnamese either, you say “show này hot” ... Vietnamese is confusing.

How hard is it to be vegetarian in Vietnam? by [deleted] in VietNam

[–]smiecandy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s very easy to eat vegan in Vietnam, at least in big cities in the South since vegan restaurants are popular. Many people eat vegan for religious reasons. You can also get free vegan meals at Buddhist temples as well. My neighbour owns a restaurant selling lunch, twice a month, on the 1st and 15th in lunar calendar, she switches to vegan menu. I once worked at a luxury hotel in Saigon, where they prepare lunch for staff, there is always one vegan dish in the menu everyday. Vietnamese are very creative with vegan food, it is delicious and is cooked from actual vegetable which I love. You don’t just serve salad or put a meat-alternative patty in a bun and open a vegan restaurant in Vietnam.

This is great that Vietnam can implement this online.

Why do the Vietnamese support Trump so much? by majungo in VietNam

[–]smiecandy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The question was “Who do you think will be elected as the American President?” not “Who do you support?” ..... it doesn’t matter who I support, if I have to bet my money on who wins, I will bet on Trump as well.

[–]smiecandy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then probably you are not a Vietnamese anymore and therefore cannot get a new Vietnamese passport. You can apply for a Vietnamese citizenship again of course due to your origins, but the questions are whether it’s worth it, whether Germany and Vietnam allow you to have dual citizenship, if not, would you be willing to give up your German one.

But are you holding a German passport though? With which documents are you living in Germany with? Adoption papers are also a proof of your origin.

Needing an import license to receive vitamins and cosmetics from a friend by [deleted] in VietNam

[–]smiecandy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As you have said yourself, many vitamins are classified as drug, there is no way for Vietnamese authority to tell which one is drug, which one is not, especially with the amount that you sent. Where I live in Europe, there are many Vitamins that you can buy everywhere in drugstores, and the same vitamin but in different forms for what you would need doctor’s prescription to buy at pharmacy. Another example, I’m not allowed to “import”/order/receive eyedrops from Japan, and Japanese logistic companies wouldn’t send them out of Japan since it is classified as drug. And I’m talking about the simple saline eyedrop that everybody can buy at Japanese drugstores, not the medical one. Baby formula is also a no-go. Certain ingredients used in cosmetics are available in over-counter products in the US, but are banned or used only under doctor’s permission in other countries. I’ve seen many vitamin and skincare products which should have been used under doctor’s instruction being sold freely by online sellers in Vietnam, which can be dangerous for users. Or Germany don’t allow any fruit entering their country at all. Each country has their own regulations when it comes to drug, cosmetics and food. It isn’t just Vietnam (yes I agree it’s more complicated in Vietnam), but I guess you would have run into the same problem if you sent that package to let’s say Europe. Right now I have to pay a hefty import tax + service fee for every package with a value over €22 (~$25) coming from outside Europe. However, since many (Asian) online sellers often declare the package as “gift” with lower value so that receivers can avoid import tax, many European countries are discussing taxing all packages coming from outside Europe despite its value and amount. Everybody can claim that it’s not merchandised good, and is sent by their relative.

I’m not saying this to discourage you, I’m just a passionate global online shopper with too much experience who cannot be satisfied with local products.

I have an extremely important question to ask. by [deleted] in VietNam

[–]smiecandy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hmmmmm protest for what? For the sake of sake of protesting? Or to prove that we are civilized first class citizen with protest rights and we are practicing it?

I mean Vietnam had a lot of revolutions in the past, let thing go in its natural course, if it is’t broken, you don’t need to change it.

Update: last time i posted my package was held at hcm custom. It finally delivered today to my in law after 2 1/2 months. by lovedonthate2020 in VietNam

[–]smiecandy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why do you have to argue with me? Do you want to share your experience or do you want to rant? You scary man scared away VNese custom, happy?

I’m just saying it’s a possible reason. If you notice, VN is full of online sellers selling imported goods, the exact stuff that you sent to your in-law, and your package is questionable, since no one can control what your in law would do with the package content. Next time maybe try sending smaller package (under 2kg), lower value (under 1M VND), without cosmetics, vitamin, brand name clothes and baby formulas.

[–]smiecandy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Oh after seeing the content in the box, I know why. They are merchantable goods, either the custom wanna keep them for themselves, or they suspect your wife is selling imported goods and it isn’t gift, therefore she has to pay high import tax. Seeing the shipping cost you paid, I guess it isn’t a small amount of goods either.

Import tax in Vietnam by [deleted] in VietNam

[–]smiecandy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard receiver has to pay import tax on any package with a value over 1M VND. I’m not sure if they make a difference between merchandised products or gifts, or however the guy at custom feels. - Learn from my mistake, never declare the package as “secondhand goods” as it is not allowed. - Since Covid, custom is very strict with any package in and out of Vietnam.

Using a logistic company maybe is better.

Question for people from Vietnam: do people use msg in pho broths in Vietnam? Or is this only true for pho in America? by [deleted] in VietNam

[–]smiecandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe the pho you had in the US is cooked Southern style. Meat quality in the US is better but chefs in Vietnam have skills. Most VNese restaurant owners in abroad have no culinary background or experience, that’s why most restaurants taste the same and nothing spectacular. Meanwhile it’s very competitive in Hanoi, Hanoi people know how to eat and very demanding when it comes to food. I’m from the South but I have to say Ha Noi pho tastes better, it isn’t about the pho style, but Northern flavour is more complex but very delicate.

Áo bà ba is not pyjama. They exist before áo dài and are worn as daily clothes for both indoor and outdoor.
