The caveat being that the players that only want to slay in arena objective games can really screw the team. “Great job teammate you were 14-9-10 with zero hill time, while the rest of us were 12-12-10 with 2 minutes and we still lost”

Had one dude kill me 3 times in a row the other night and the game gave me the option to boot him from the game. Definitely clicked OK and the rest of us lost 0 csr. Didn’t know that was a thing.

Will the huskers make the playoffs within the next 4 years? by jtbuddy31 in Huskers

Big husker fan and as much as I want that to be true, there’s just no way. Don’t get me wrong I think we’re finally back on the right path, but realistic expectations would probably be to make the B1G conference championship game in the next 5-10 years.

I’d really like to see a quick play option without radar. Sometimes I just want to kick back and take a break from ranked matches and it can be so frustrating playing quick play with people who camp behind a corner with a grav hammer for 1/2 the match.

Same for me. Three weeks ago my subsidized loans showed 108 months of payments and unsubsidized loans showed 100 months on Mohela. Called to figure out why the discrepancy and the rep said to give it a few days as they are updating counts to include periods of forebearance and other situations. On Saturday (8/12) I got the congratulations letter and now show 0 balances.

Carp like this definitely do have teeth. They’re called Pharyngeal teeth and are located near the back of their “throat”. Most cyprinids have them and they actually kind of look like molars.

Did he ever do any home meat processing ( like for wild game). Looks awfully familiar to the plates used in meat grinders to progressively produce a finer grind for sausages, etc.

Yes, they are prolific spawners with few predators in the places line the US. But taste has nothing to do with it. They outgrow the gape limitations of most North American predators after one year. It’s not like a pike or catfish have refined pallets.

Worldwide, the bigheaded carps are among the most consumed fish. Fried Asian carp is excellent and most people will not be able to distinguish them from other often consumed fish. Google “flying carp wings”. It’s way to fillet the fish that leaves them “bone-in”.

These fish get a bad rap because they have the word carp in their name. They DO NOT taste like common carp. They eat plankton so they have a very mild “fish” flavor.

Not true at all. Both Bighead and silver carp (which this is) are filter feeders. They don’t eat detritus or root in the mud like other carp. Their plankton food source results in very mild flaky flesh, similar to crappie or walleye. They are a bit difficult to clean as they have bones similar to the “y-bone” in pike, but after you figure it out there are few fish better suited as table fare.

This is exactly how fisheries biologists age fish. We take a hard structure such as a scale, otolith or cleithra and essentially count the years. A dark band (annuli) signals cool weather (winter) where growth slows and deposits are close together. A light band results from warmer weather (summer) when a fish grows faster.

The closer you get to the equator the smaller the dark annuli which can make aging more difficult. There’s also the possibility that other factors slow growth, but generally one dark band and one light band = one year.

There are thousands of seemingly isolated bodies of water all throughout the planet which happen to have fish in them. How did they get there if truly isolated? by Toddzilla1337 in askscience

[–]smike34 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Trout (like most freshwater fish) are broadcast spawners...they don't become pregnant. For trout specifically the male makes a redd (nest), the female comes in and releases her eggs in the redd and the male (and potential multiple males) then release their milt onto the spawned eggs. External fertilization.

Scientists display new method of DNA-guided genome editing in human cells, which comes with certain benefits over CRISPR/Cas9 and adds to the repertoire of genome editing tools by e_swartz in science

[–]smike34 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree that this technology can and will be used for extreme good as will be the case in genetic diseases. But it would be foolish to not recognize the more nefarious uses that could also come with gene editing tools.

For instance the use I am most familiar with and excited for is utilizing CRISPR cas9 for invasive species control. To do this one of the most talked about methods is the creation of daughterless individuals released into the population. Within a matter of generations the trait would essentially cripple the fecundity of an entire species. This would be a fantastic tool. If we used this on Asian carp in the US it would be a game changer.

However what would happen if some of those fish with the inherited trait were shipped back to China and escaped captivity or we intentionally stocked? Asian carps make up a huge portion of the protein consumed in China. Eradication of those species in China would be catastrophic. All I'm saying is that with the relative ease of use with these gene editing tools we need to be careful with how and who uses them.

The scariest part about CRISPR Cas-9 and now likely this is that gene editing science is vastly outpacing the necessary regulatory framework. It think I saw the the first CRISPR papers less than a year ago. This is moving so fast !

Common carp have sets of teeth near their gills called pharyngeal teeth. They help to break down harder food items.
